Strength:
deep, clean, and acurate bass.
Weakness:
Expensive I bought the Energy XL S12 and had to returned it after 3 weeks of listening. I decided to give the Velodyne HGS 12 a try and I love it. It can produce rumble you can feel in home theater application. It's also a good sub for music if your main speakers are bass shy. Highly recommended. Try to get a good deal. Don't pay for retail price. Similar Products Used: Energy XL S12 |

Strength:
Really fast bass, punchy, clean, smooth ,linear bass frequency response, quite operation when switching on/off, beautiful look.
Weakness:
subsonic low-frequency reproduciton not good enough I first purchased a brand new Sunfire signature because of all the good comments heard. I was initially impressed by its powerful & extended subsonic presentation. However, I noticed its bass is so loosen and kept going on & on. When I only set its x-over at about 60Hz but it still could not help. Similar Products Used: Sunfire signature, M&K 150 THX |

Strength:
Very musical and accurate bass, compact size and good looks
Weakness:
Emits low level mechanical noise The HGS-12 is a fantastic sub. I use mine with Revel M20s and C30 for L,R and C, and Optimus Pro 77s for surrounds. My electronics consists of Proceed AVP pre/pro, PMDT DVD transport, and ATI 1505 power amp. Since the M20s go down to 40 Hz, I need the HGS-12 to support the mid-bass and produce the bottom octave, and this it does superbly. That it produces very low distortion is well known, and it even looks good. I mostly chose the HGS-12 because of its performance as a musical sub and its size. For HT performance it seems fine although other reviewers will say more. The only criticism I have of the sub is the mechanical noise it produces that sounds like fan noise (but isn't). This noise bothered me at first, although I only hear it 1% of the time. Its much lower level than my refrigerator compressor but can be heard when there is total silence. The noise is obviously associated with the Class D amp. If you insist on an absolutely quiet sub when it isn't playing then you will need to look elsewhere. If a little noise is tolerable, like a VCR, then this sub is for you. Similar Products Used: CSW Powered Sub |

I first purchased the HGS 10 but it felt very strained at the low end below 25hz. Nice quality of bass, however. I upgraded to the HGS 12 and what a huge difference! The 10 isn't even in the same catagory as the 12! The HGS 12 goes below 25 hz with authority and without strain! The speed and tightness of this bass is amazing! It frees up the midrange and treble on my speakers in my home theater system (all speakers set to small and crossed over at 50 hz) and allows them to sound more at ease and smoother. |

A follow-up to my last review. Another user emailed me and asked about the humming noise, so I decided to take another listen. I went and layed down right next to the sub and placed my ear about 6 inches from the sub and could (barely) hear a low hum. So I apologize for the previous comment, but still recommend a properly shielded sub cable as well as checking the outlet it's plugged into to see if it's properly grounded. Other than that, the HGS is still giving me everything I ask of it and more. |

I bought the Velodyne cause I got a small apartment. I first listened to theHGS-10 but it didn't crank out the bass good enough so I bought the HGS-12. |

I had space limitations for my listening room and needed a small, high quality subwoofer for my home theater/audio system. I listened to the entire line of Sunfire subwoofers and was not impressed because they couldn't blend that well with music and were somewhat difficult to adjust their output. I would admit, they can play loud! Next, I listened to the Velodyne FSR-12 and HGS-10. Both blended well with music and were able to provide quality home theater sound. I bought the HGS-10, brought it home, played Air Force One on DVD at half volume on my receiver, and the HGS-10 protection circuitry turned on! Unfortunately, when I called Velodyne, they advise customers who buy the HGS-10 to purchase it only if you have a small room or listen at moderate volume. I went back to the dealer and upgraded to the HGS-12. What a difference!! There is more than enough LFE that I can handle and this time no protection circuitry kicked in at even at the maximum volume my receiver can put out. I also own an old Velodyne VA-1012. Now I have both subs connected in my AV system, and the LFE in music and video are easily "felt". |

I've always wanted a Velodyne subwoofer to go with my Spica speakers but never found one that is small, light, and good enough for my room. I bit the bullet and bought this sub and wowwwwww, what a sub! It reaaaaally improves the staging and quality of the music. The base is so tight and I can feel every bit of vibration due to the low frequency range that the sub emits. I love this sub and will use it in a future home theater system. Right now I only use it for audio and it makes me listen to music more than I used to. |
