Strength:

Compact size, tight musical bass

Weakness:

Placement sensitive

I was looking for a musical sub to compliment my Paradigm studio 20s in a two channel system. I auditioned several including most of Paradigms subs, Klipsch, NHT sub 2 ect. While most of the subs I listened to were good, the Velodyne just seemed to be better suited for my type of music than the rest. It goes very low, I''''m guessing mid 20 hz range, very tight, and is small enough to put anywhere. Although, I did find it to be placement sensitive. I also liked the NHT but it is quite a bit larger and for the smaller room this system is in would be kind of overkill. For a compact sub with lots of clean tight bass, you can''''t go wrong with the SPL-1000. Strength:

size, price, smooth & fast, non-ported (imho)

Weakness:

blue LED power light too bright, not sure the auto on/off is working properly (I just leave it on)

I have really enjoyed this little sub. I auditioned the Velodyne CHT line, but just didn''t appreciate their sound. I listened to the new Klipsch Reference Subs. They sounded great with music but the dvd sound wasn''t what I was looking for. I decided on the Velodyne SPL-1000 because of the reviews, size, and money. Musically: It''s a relatively fast sub. Kept up with Lars'' double bass in Metallica''s One. Its also quite smooth with Enya''s Watermark album. The SPL-1000 really helped round out my Cambridge Soundworks Tower II''s {which I have been less that thrilled with (can''t push as hard as I would like)}. Movies: Not the most earth shattering sub in the world. If you don''t mind a 3 foot tall/ 16" wide cylinder in your room go with SVS. For the size and price, I have been completely satisfied with the SP-1000. Mulholland Dr., while completely confusing, has some surprisingly low bass. While my old Atlantic Technology 8" "Powered Bass Module" would have tried to play it off like a fart during Thanksgiving dinner, the SPL-1000 smoothly rolled it out. And it wouldn''t be a subwoofer review without saying "The Matrix sounded AWESOME!!" and "I felt like I was in Saving Private Ryan!". (Both statements are true with the Velodyne, but I hate to be cliche.)

Strength:

Price,performance,long throw woofer

Weakness:

Looks a little cheesy. The plexiglass model looks cool but is a rip-off.

After auditioning the SPL1200 & SPL1000 in my home theater, I''d have to say the SPL1000 is well worth the money. I thought the SPL1200 would of blown it away in performance but the SPL1000 puts out tons of accurate bass. My room is a raised floor home theater in my basement that measure 11'' X 16'' w/7'' ceiling. I bought a JMLabs SW700 sub for $500 from a local audio store and could barely hear the sub no matter where I put it. The SPL1000 CRANKS no matter what postion I have it in my room. For the extra hundred bucks the SPL1000 is worth double the price than the Jmlab sub. I bought the Jmlab because all my other speakers are JM. Velodyne specializes in subs and it is obvious after listening to one.

Strength:

Amazingly quick response, very deep extension for a 10 inch, never seems to run out of steam

Weakness:

somewhat placement sensitive, not as attractive as other subs, but who cares

This little subwoofer is one amazing piece of audio engineering. I was thinking of getting one of the larger velodynes or Paradigm servo 15 to complement my Polk LS90's and did extensive listening to both over a few months period. Then Judd(extremely nice guy and very competetive pricing) told me about the new SPL series that was about to come out and to hold off on a decision until then. He gave me a Sunfire Truesub Jr. to take home for a week and listen to before the SPL-1000 came in. That little guy was incredible for its size and had a very full bottom end(if you just want it for movies and have a small room, pick it up its a marvel), but when the action got quick it just couldn't keep up - and for music it is essentially useless -it is just too muddy.
Then he let me take home the SPL-1000. My first reaction was you have got to be freakin kidding me! How can this small cube be so loud, so fast, and so deep at the same time. It was amazing. The uzi dropping down the stairs scene in True Lies was hit with a speed and punch that I had never heard before, and I've watched that scene with alot of subs. Still, surprisingly it did'nt seem to have that rumble in the chest that the sunfire had. That's when I discovered placement is very important. Just two inches closer to the wall and my appreciation doubled. During the new DTS version of the Haunting this thing fills your gut and never runs out of power. It has filled my 12 X 24 foot room with absolute ease, and I have never been able to turn the volume past 12 oclock. The 12 inch is just more extension and decibels, so if you don't have a huge room, the 10 is all you will need.
The added bonus is that this sub is just as phenomenal with music. I always thought I was hearing all I needed to hear with music from my mains since I have heard them go down to about 25 hertz. I'm listening too all my CD's again just to see what I have missed. This unit transitions from one note to the next so quickly there is always space and definition where the composer intended(I listen to everything from Heavy Metal to New Age).
This sub combines the speed of an 8 with the power and low end extension of an excellent 15. You would have to spend a hell of alot more to come close to its performance, and frankly, I don't know if there is just one sub out there you could buy that could match it in every area. For those of you who have been teaming that 8 inch Energy with the Paradigm Servo 15 to get the best of both worlds, this is the sub for you.

Strength:

Strong punchy solid low bass, quite the SPL pumper to for its small size

I got this little subwoofer for a bedroom system and it does the job with authority.
It's small size is nice and for such a small sub it plays plenty loud and plenty deep it could even reach down to 20Hz with low distortion.
Go buy the Haunting place it in you DVD player and it will show the sure power this little sub has it shakes my bed verry good and rattles the windows.
I love this sub alot but it's recomended that you use this sub in a small room.

Strength:

Power and detail

Weakness:

not many

I reviewed a lot of subs before settling on this one for price and performance. I have since compared it to many other subs that have come on the market and I am still very pleased with it.

I bought this sub just about 1 year ago for my 20ft x 18ft x 2 story great room. The room has large doorways on 3 walls and a balcony up above. So, essentially the sub has to fill a much a larger area than "the room" it is in.

When I first got it I placed it on the fireplace (5 ft) side of my home theater set up. That was not the best idea. It sounded fantastic in the same room. However, when you went into the room on the other side of the fireplace it was skull splitting.

Once I moved it to the other side of the room there were no downsides. It produces well and is very cost effective.

Other speakers used in the system:

Martin Logan - Ascents (front), Aerius i (rear), and Theater (center).

Strength:

Incredible bass for its size, deep, tight, fast, tuneful. High Wife Acceptance Factor.

Weakness:

Very placement specific.

I was lucky enough to find a brand new sealed SPL-1000 on eBay.

It took 3 hours to find the right location in my room - much of which I was cursing this sub's boominess, and lack of depth....but then I found it....
Just to the left of my right speaker, 3 inches from the rear wall...finally the sound I was hoping for. Tight deep bass that blends perfectly with my Paradigm Reference Stuidio/20 v.2 speakers. The 10" driver is able to keep up with the 6.5" in the Paradigms, and together they are pure synergy. I can't turn the volume control above the second notch for music, but I bump it up to the third notch for movies - and WOW! How can a sub this small pump out so much bass??!

The SPL-1000 blows away the Energy Encore 8 and Paradigm PDR-12 (they're not even in the same league), and I find that I prefer the Velodyne to the Mirage Substrata 1000 - it just seems to have more impact.

Anyhow - I highly recommend this sub, especially if you can pick one up on eBay for cheap!

Strength:

Bass, Size

Weakness:

Touchy on were it will sit in a room

Aside from the fact that you have to take some time to position it, I have yet to find a problem with the little bundle of joy. The unit shakes the floor at ten O'clock and vibrates the couch at eleven O'clock. Sadly though, I live in an apartment and have not had the opportunity to play with it fully.

Strength:

Built very well, excellent response, lots of control

Weakness:

none so far just got it, still fine tuning

Just got this sub last night so far so good. Might be more power than I need considering the small room it's in. No complaints so far I've only had it for a day now. For the money it is well worth it. It sounds really good at low levels and at high levels.
