The speakers were aesthetically simple and decent looking if you didn't look at the back. The connectors are reasonably well built. Also, the mounting bracket, although small, is adequate. Weakness:
Marginal at best by today's standards. Frequency response isn't even close to flat even if you discount bass. These need tweeters to get clear treble and they need better drivers for midrange since the drivers these do have seem very hot at a narrow frequency range (upper midrange, low treble) and very weak outside of that range. Increasing the volume greatly worsens the problem. While Pioneer made excellent electronics (receivers, CD players, etc.), their speakers' quality somehow fell far short of even much lower priced options from companies that actually paid attention to their speakers. Even aesthetically, Pioneer made no attempt to coat the backs of the speakers with anything. They're just bright brown extra cheap particle board; not even somewhat cheap MDF. They could have at least painted the back black to make it less noticeable. Finally, a correction on the initial description: These are rated on the sticker on the speaker to have a max of 30 watts peak, not 40. If 30 is peak, RMS is much lower. A very weak 25 watt per channel receiver could damage these... |

These speakers are exactly what you need in between your monster speakers for that super clarity treble response. These bring out the true treble response on any voice while listening to your music loud. They will also will handle much much more wattage than advertised. I have a Pioneer SX-1980 with a pair of Pioneer HPM-150's and they are the finishing touch between the system to give you superb voice recoil in the middle. If you find a good pair grab them, they are well worth the price and are built pretty good and heavy. |

Strength:
Clear treble, mid, and bass at most volumes
Weakness:
mid a tad muddy, obviously lof bass if lacking Wonderful speaker for the money, even better for their size! Using a pair with a 10" JBL sub as my 2.1 speaker setup for my home PC - Works great. Better than ANY PC speaker setup, including Klipsch, AL, Logitech, etc.. |
