Strength:

Great Picture w/ strong colors, easy to use remote and menu
options for setup. Great size for a smaller room. Digital

Weakness:

Had a little bit of trouble with the set shutting off suddenly.

Bought this TV in time for college football season and was not dissappointed. Had just moved into a house with a good sized basment started looking for digital RPTV and was looking at the Sony 53" with HiDef capability. The 53" was too big so I decided to drop down to the 43" and looked at the Sony 43 but I couldn't convince myself to go away from a digital.
I found the Hitachi at Circut City for a little more than the Sony, but it was digital with HDTV capabilty and the picture was much shaper than the Sony. Got it home and it was super easy to setup and with a little adjustment on the picture setup was great.
Have yet to hook this up to a DVD player yet, I am looking for the right progressive scan player. I you have any input feel free to let me know. I do have this hooked up to a digital cable source and the digital channels are great.
Only problem I had was after about a week the tv would just shut off after a couple of hours of being on. That lasted about two weeks but have not had any problems since.
I have been really happy with this tv and since not a lot of broadcast are in HD yet could reason spending the $ for a 16:9. Plus I didn't want to have any problems with possible burn out from the side bars later on.
Overall a great tv with a super picture and can't wait to get this hooked up to a progressive scan DVD to see what this unit can do.

Strength:

Incredible Picture, Nice Looks, not as heavy as a Wega

Weakness:

First set had to be returned.

My first set had the same problem as many of the other reviewers. The set just shut off on it's own after around 10 minutes on, then you would have to wait like 2 minutes or so to turn it on again. I can't believe that these sets passed Hitachi quality control, because it is my understanding that it is a HUGE problem with this set.
On the good side my second set is over a year old now, and I haven't had any problems with it at all. The set was calibrated with VIVA, and the picture is incredible. If you get one that works, I would put the picture quality of this set up against any set out there. The picture quality was even better than the 53" Sony Hi-Scan. I really don't care about the audio, because it was hooked up to surround from day one. What are you people doing buying an HDTV if you don't have surround?? :)

Sony STR945 receiver
JBL 171THX (Front)

Strength:

Picture Quality, Brightness

Weakness:

The picture turns off by itself after 2 hours of play and then every few minutes after that which indicates a possible thermal fault. It doesn't work with my JVC XV-D721BK DVD player in Progressive Scan mode. Chaneel switching delay makes surfing unpleasant.

When I first got this unit I was quite pleased with the picture quality, especially with a DVD source.

I went out and bought a new D721BK DVD player thinking that it would be even better in progressive scan mode. Unfortunately when I switch it over to progressive scan mode it just goes black or shows the title screen and that's it. Hitachi service techs told me it's because it's only compatible with their DVD player. Thanks, Hitachi. Too bad you dont sell your progressive scan model in Canada.

After using the TV for a couple of days the picture just turned off by itself after 4 hours of play. I turned the power off and back on and it seemed to work okay. That was good for a couple more hours before it quit again. As time went on the shutdown would happen much sooner and the intervals became much shorter until I am not able to even finish a movie without toggling the power constantly. If I unplugged it for a couple of days it would go back to 4 hours the first time, etc.We had a service guy come out and look at it but he could only offer to bring it to the shop and try to figure it out. I was not willing to let it sit on a bench somewhere and end up going through the same thing again so decided to bring it back to the dealer. The dealer was very co-operative and offered a trade or refund no problems. I actually like this TV in spite of the negatives and just asked to swap for a new unit of the same model.Unfortunately, they are out of stock of the Hitachi and it's back-ordered for weeks. They offered us the Toshiba 43h70 for the same price. They had none in the showroom but I looked at the specs and it seems similar if not better. I found similar Toshiba models (but not the same) at other stores and was impressed with their quality and so agreed to a trade.

I'll have it in a few days and I'll post a review here after I give it a thorough going over.

Strength:

Clear, Bright Screen. Very nice screen shield and good viewable angles for a projection TV. Priced at regular projection TVs of SONY/Panasonic

Weakness:

Nothing yet

Since I live in an apartment, I wanted a TV that'll fit in the decor and not become the whole decor. So I wanted something around 40", I almost bought the 43" SONY non-HD projection TV but I was not happy with the dark horizontal lines in all of their models.

Then I saw the Hitachi 43FDX01B, what a difference. It's brighter and the builtin signal filter really cleans up the picture quality. Unlike the SONY, You cannot tell the lines even when you get really up close. I use the television with my JVC SVHS player, a Dreamcast, and a Konka DVD player(the DVD players plays CDR, CDRW, and all DVD's flawlessly). I'm very satisfied with the unit's performance and have not encountered any problems. The channel surfing speed is a little slow but I do it through my VCR so it's really quick.

The only problem is finding a good HDTV receiver to use with it. So if anyone can suggest some, I'll appreciated it.

Sidenote: I talked the sales rep at Circuitcity to include a 3 year warratee on this unit instead of the free DVD player that they were advertising w/ HDTV purchase.

Great Picture

I've read some reviews that mention the TV shutting off by itself which made me kind of nervous, my tv has not done that; I read in the operators manual that this tv has a very sensitive surge protection system ( page 60-64)of manual, I use an isolation transformer on my system, maybe you guys that are having trouble are having surges at your house; this TV is working great and I am very satisfied...

I wrote a review a few weeks ago and had a couple of replies as to how I purchased the Hatachi
43in tv for 1499.00.I'm sorry I didn't clarify it was an opened box item, but, still brand new, also
with a factory warranty, same as brand new.I saved about $500.00, and have one hell of a
tv set. Check it out, you won't be sorry!!! PS. Don't be afraid to BUG the hell out of the
salesman. They want to sell as bad as you want to buy!

Strength:

Great picture, nice size for smaller rooms, easy to navigate menus

Weakness:

Could use a couple more inputs

I did a lot of research before purchasing this set. The picture is absolutely great. I have digital cable connected with S-video and it looks fine. Some channels could look better. I just ordered Video Essentials so hopefully I will be able to optimize the picture. The speakers built into the set are somewhat weak, but the only time I use them is when I want to swap the PIP. All other times I use my home theater for audio. DVD's also look phenomenol with the component inputs. I don't have a progressive scan dvd player so I can't comment on some of the problems people report on this site. The stand should be included in the price as it is almost a necessity, at least in my case. Circuit City also had a deal going where they threw in a dvd player with the set. Too bad they were out of progressive scan models. I would definetly recommend the set to anyone looking to go to a big screen. I can't understand how anyone would buy an analog projection tv after seeing the hdtv version.

TV goes to black screen - The 9 + signs show up after having TV on for a while

I would really like to know if anyone is having the same problem as I am. My TV was actually manufactured in 2001..but I have having some problems. I have had the TV turn off twice since receiving it and the 9 + signs show up (I think it is called convergence?) at random. I don't know if it is fixing itself or there is something wrong. I have only owned the unit for less than 2 months and plan on calling the manufacturer & store where I purchased the product VERY soon.

If you have had this problem PLEASE EMAIL ME DIRECTLY!!! Funker14@aol.com

Strength:

Great picture, small footprint

Weakness:

small stand

I bought the set just over a year ago and haven't had any problems. My set has never turned itself off like it did/does for some of the reviewers below. The set received somewhat of a lousy review from one of the magazines (forgot if it was Home Theater or another similar mag.). That reviewer harped on a big bright spot in the middle of the TV he tested. I've been very happy with the picture - regardless of whether it's from my digital cable, VCR, or DVD player. The narrow depth was a major attraction for me - it's 5-8" narrower than a 36" tube TV. The one complaint I have is with the optional stand I bought - it stinks. The storage compartment is too narrow to put two components (i.e. receiver/DVD player) side by side and it's barely high enough to stack two components...room for my receiver and DVD player - no room for the rest - VCR/CD changer/Cassette deck/Digital Cable Receiver, etc. Do yourself a favor and buy a different stand.

Strength:

Great picture quality. Menu is intuitively set up for quick navigation.

Weakness:

Channels take a little longer than expected to switch. The "Power On" light is very bright.

Overall a great set with EXCELLENT picture quality, and a user freindly menu. I use it with a progressive scan DVD player and the picture is exceptional.
