Weakness:
Stand should be included in price Generally speaking this is a great projection tv. I pretty much agree with the other positive reviews from this site. Instead of just repeating what others have said, I want to address some MINOR technical issues. Just to begin, I have a B.S. degree in physics and I have worked with optical systems for a long time. I am new to the world of projection tv, and I apologize if I made any mistakes. Below is just guess work. LENS SYSTEM: The 5-element lens projects nicely. There is slight chromatic aberration (a slight blue ting around some bright edges due to blue and red light not converging EXACTLY at the same focus point) noticeable from time to time. You have to be looking for it and know what your looking for to spot it. Chromatic aberration is a problem for any lens system and is very difficult to eliminate, regardless of expense. But once again it is slight and hardly noticeable. CRTs: The CRTs are very powerful and bright. The television seems a bit sensitive to red. I think this might have been corrected if the intensity on the red CRT was lowered just a bit. Again, this is just guess work. BURN-IN: OK, I have read different opinions about burn-in. My understanding is that burn-in is caused when the electron gun from the CRT is repeating a pattern on the CRT''s phosphorus screen at high intensity and for a long period of time as to produce a "burn mark" on the screen. If you are watching 16:9 film, the entire screen is changing, no need to worry about burn-in. If you are watching 2.35:1 aspect film, black bars are displayed at the top and bottom of the image. Yes, black bars constitute a repeating pattern; however, they are black because the electron guns are not exposed to those parts of the phosphorus screen, thus not contributing to burn-in. If you are watching 4:3 programming, grey vertical bars are displayed. I have read a review at another website that the grey bars are there to prevent burn-in. However, the e-guns are repeating a pattern (a simple constant grey bar can constitute a pattern). As is, this may cause burn-in. However, I am assuming the intensity is probably not high enough to cause burn-in. Why did Hitachi not use black vertical bars? Despite minor issues. TWO THUMBS UP FOR HITACHI!! |

Strength:
Awesome picture, extremely bright. Perfect size, doesn't take over the living room. Only weighs about 150lbs compared to 300lbs of the 36" Sony Tubes. Many features, plenty of inputs on the back of the TV to handle all your wires.
Weakness:
On board sound is average. Surround sound system is a must. Requires the purchase of a stand. This TV is so fun I can't get anything done around my house! All I do is watch HBO on Demand! If you're looking for a TV that won't dominate your house, but has all the latest technology this is the TV for you. It is a good value considering what widescreen, HDTV's cost in the tube format. It takes a little while to get used to the different modes when watching a 4:3 signal (smoothwide, normal, wide, zoom). You have to find the right aspect for different programming. One important note: I have yet to watch a DVD that doesn't have the black bars at the top and bottom of the screen. Hollywood is currently making movies wider than the 16:9 format so even with this widescreen TV the picture won't fill up the entire screen unless you zoom. However, DVD's look absolutely incredible with the component video cable, even with non-progressive players. The $200 Hitachi stand looks very nice with this TV. We originally tried putting it on a coffee table but it looked horrible. I highly recommend getting Satellite TV or Digital cable that is entirely digital. The analog tier of my Digital cable service looks horrible. Running analog TV into this baby is like putting snow tires on a Ferrari. Overall, I am very satisfied with my purchase and was happy with my experience purchasing it from Circuit City. The analog tier of my Digital cable service looks horrible. Strength:
Great picture, size, weight, and price and brightness. Two HD inputs.
Weakness:
None, except that the remote will not control my digital cable box. Also no fiber input. Great RPTV. My wife and I were in the market for a HDTV RP and actually hadn't thought about this set until we visited the store we bought it from. We were set on the Sony, but no one could get in for a few months. We got a great price for the Hitachi, and the salesman showed us the specs and this unit and others that he sold and did not sell, and we decided to get this one. It has the highest brightness of any RPTV that we have seen, which is a bog concern to us being that the tv will be located in our living room, and that room has a lot of windows. Also our room is narrow, and this fit perfectly. Similar Products Used: Sony KP-51HW40 51-inch,Toshiba 50H81 50-Inch, Mitsubshi WS55809. |

I just had it delivered today. The time it takes to switch channels is a bit rediculous. Also the channel name labeling was a hassle. The stand I purchased, which is made by Hitachi, is too overpriced. I researched this category of televisions for a couple weeks, which brought me to three models. The Panasonic 47WX49(I think that's the right model), the Toshiba 42H81 and the Hitachi 43UWX10B. After quickly eliminating the Panasonic by reviews given on this sight I had to choose from two models. I went to Fry's and looked at the Toshiba. Fry's did not have them in stock or else I might have purchased right then. I then went to Best Buy, but they wanted to give me a free chair in ottoman with the purchase. I asked if the chair and ottoman could be used for credit on a progressive scan DVD and they said no. So I walked!!!! I then went to Circuit City and checked out the Hitachi. I'm glad I waited because I could instantly tell the difference in picture quality between the Toshiba and the Hitachi. The picture was brighter and cleaner. Circuit City was giving away a free DVD player, which they gave me credit for. It was a cheesy little $90 no name brand DVD player. My only complaint is the TV stand that was an additional $200. A piece of furniture made by Hitachi should not cost $200. Another complaint would be the time it takes for the channels to change. Overall a great addition to our new home. Strength:
Regular TV picture is great. TV has smaller footprint compared to other projections.
Weakness:
Slow channel switching. If anyone knows how to speed it up please let me know. This TV is wonderful. I run regular cable and the TV picture is the best I have ever seen. Also DVD picture quality is almost perfect. I compared it to a Panasonic 50 inch and this one beats it hands down. |

The 16:9 ratio is amazing. Set the ratio to Smooth Fill and you can watch TV using 16:9 ratio!
Weakness:
When playing DVD, you need to hook it up to your own audio component. The background music is louder than the dialog After reading the reviews here, I narrowed down my selections to Toshiba 42"IN HDTV with 16:9 ratio and this Similar Products Used: None |

sucks on analog cable normally it takes me a while to buy a piece of gear of any kind just like most audiophiles out there who reads a lot about a particular product before making a decision. but i swear when i walked into the store i immediately noticed the picture quality of this unit.now i have friends that already have their own sets at home i.e. sony wega, pioneer elite etc.to make a long story short i would recommend this piece to friends and enemies alike or at least give it a good look. and thats not trying the component outs yet...
