Strength:

Outstanding picture quality and exceptional sound. Has a great look. Plenty of inputs.

Weakness:

None so far, although the factory directions on how to operate all the features could be a little more in depth, with all the features this thing has they seem to just skim the surface in the explainations.

Bought at Rex for a little under 1900.00 best price I found in my area for this many features an quality. This model has outstanding picture quality and sound, the 61" screen is just great in my living room.I definetly recommend purchase of this T.V.

Strength:

Excellent picture, Magic Focus, decent picture with Cable.

Weakness:

Remote, picture setting memorys limited.

I've had this set since Oct. 99 and honestly beleive it's the best ntsc. rptv on the market.

I had a sony V-series for a couple of weeks in 98 and exchanged it for a KV35XBR-48 direct view due to poor picture on cable-not really the set's fault as cable quality isn't great where I am. The Hitachi does a much better job with the cable signal, to the point that some cable channels look as good as DSS. DVD picture is damn close to some hdtv demos I've seen.

Overall, I would have to say that the picture on this 53" rptv is as good as the 35" XBR direct view, far exceeding my expectations.

Scan lines are only visible during credit rolls from my 13' viewing distance.

I did have to calibrate my set with VE and Avia to get the best picture, as the factory presets are way too high.
The screen protector is highly reflective, so get best results with no lights on in front of the set.

The set has tons of audio features including a built-in Pro Logic decoder, graphic equalizer, subwoofer output. This makes it very usable for people just starting out in HT who want to delay investing in a new reciever and speakers right away.

I looked at Sony, Mitsubishi, Toshiba, and Panasonic and feel the Hitachi outperforms them all for ntsc viewing.
Color shift is negligible, unlike most rptvs, and the Magic Focus self-convergence feature works perfectly, and I'm really fussy about rptv convergence. If someone is not ready to make the jump to hdtv-ready sets, I highly recommend the 53SBX59B.
The remote is very directional and somewhat clunky, but I control mine with a Cinema 7 One-for-All.

Strength:

Excellent Picture

Weakness:

Remote lacks learning capability

Brought this RPTV (53SBX01B 2000)3 month ago on a whim and have enjoyed it ever since. I have no real complaints.
With digital signal from Dishnetwork(via coax and S-Video) and DVD(thru component input)this set have provided me many hours of enjoyment. With sound from my home sound system consisting of components brought through online auctions, I haven't heard the TV's sound thru the included speakers. But, I guess they would be more then sufficient for most people.

If anybody reading this and looking for a projection TV, look no further this is the best analog RPTV on the market bar none. I've look at many Sony XBR RPTV for much more money and they don't look as good as this one. This is the best at any price. Sony WEGA are a big joke.

Strength:

excellent choice amongst rptv

Weakness:

screen

I purchased this unit about three months ago and very pleased by its performance. HOwever, one flaw that I noticed is the quality of the screen protector. I had to call service to replace the screen twice because of obvious defects. First, I noticed an evenly spaced circular black marks form the center extending further out. Secondly, I noticed a black mark about 12 inches long in the left upper section which clearly is screen defect. I am curious if any one had similar problems.

The model i bought was the 53SBX01BA.. When i first turned on the TV, the picuter was a little snowy, but it wasn`t every channel..I put a signal boosterand now its great..I can only imagine the picture when i hook up my dish..I was going to buy the mitsubishi 50707 for 1899, but i wanted the hitachi..They matched the price at 1899 and i am very happy with it.It was much better than the mitsu. You can`t go wrong with this TV..

NONE , PERIOD!!!!!

This is to the guy below, you do not know what the hell you are talking about and you have no business bashing this set. Look at where you bought it from "REX" what the hell kind of store is that??? Your TV was most likely an open box model that has been on the floor for months or your delivery crew were very careless. Shop from a reputable dealer first off like SEARS!!!! Anyone who has this TV, here are some new calibrated settings in addition to previous settings posted below.

Screen protector is great , my little one loves to touch the screen with his grubby little hands.

Strength:

Beautiful picture for the first month

Weakness:

Convergence needs adjusted by technition. Drifts out of convergence within a week or two. The main problem is that after the first month, The picture began leaving a flash image with lines overlapping the next scene. That is to say, everytime a scene in a movie or comercial changes from one camera shot to the next, there is a momentary overlap of the two images with lines through it. I called Hitach customer service and they refered me to a technician that turns out not to service my area. I called back and they did the same thing, three more times. They finally gave me the name of a local tech who does service my area, but he told me he had never heard of this ckind of problem and that he had to call Hitachi techs to ask questions. 2 weeks later he hadn't gotten back to me and still hadn't visited my house. I called him and he said the Hitachi tecnitions told him to tell me to turn the contrast down. This did nothing to address my problem, so I called him back. A week later I called again and he said the Hitachi Techs said try adjusting the comb filter on the remote menu. Well, there is no such adjustment on this model. I called back and told him and he said he wanted me to videotape the problem and bring him the video tape. I said that was rediculous. That might show a bad signal, or a bad VCR, but it's the TV that I want repaired. He insisted, and I we had an argument on the phone. I told him thanks for nothing. I called Hitachi Customer service the story and they said they would find a different repair service for me. A week later they called with an appointmet with the SAME REPAIR SERVICE. I told them the story again. They got back to me a few days later and asked if I could make a video tape for the Technician. I said all I want is my set looked at in my home by a qualified repairman. They said I was free to find a differen repair service myself. In the beginning they told me I had to use a tech of their choice or my warrenty would be no good. Now 3 months later, my TV is still not fixed. Now I'm resulting to have Circuit City repair handle the problem and I don't trust them at all. Hitachi Customer Service stinks. Their attitude was sarcastic and they just had no answers for me. I told them I was going to publish a webpage next to theirs voicing my complaints about my shabby treatment, and they chuckled and said " You have a right to do that sir". So, I'm starting here and then publishing the page at http://www.3dviewmax.com/hitachi.htm

I don't know what else to say.

Strength:

Great picture, Component video input, multiple S-video inputs.

I have to admit I was leaning towards purchasing a sony WEGA before I saw the Hitachi. I was unwilling to sacrifice picture definition and image quality found in traditional tube televisions.

When I saw the Hitachi I knew this was the set for me. With 1000 lines of resolution, vs. the norm of 800 lines, the image quality is superb. Granted you could spend quite a bit more for a digital tube which usually operate at 1600 lines of resolution.

The projection system found in the Hitachi is far better, and more advanced, than other compeditors. Also, keep in mind that Hitachi produces the lenses found in 40% of all projectione TV's which leads me to believe they keep the best for themselves.

Incredible Picture, Fabulous Sound

Weakness:

Glare from Screen Protector

For a year now, I've shopped and compared about everything out there. Came down to a Sony V or S series or the Hitachi 53"...new model...finally put the 6 year old Mitsu up for sale and unloaded it at a reasonable price. Struggled for a few more days on what to buy...

It boiled down to finally springing for the Hitachi...why? Well, Sears priced matched the best deal I could find at $1899.00 and the local Sears is about 4 blocks from the house...sooooo...I figured, hey, if I don't like it, I can live with it for a while and still take it back without a big hassle..

I've calibrated it and hooked this Bad Boy up and unless something pretty dramatic comes out while I'm still in Sears 90 day return period, you're gonna have to drag me away from this TV. It's absolutely a fabulous set and in my opinion as good as any digital set I looked at costing up to $1000.00 more.

This set will tide me over for the next several years and at that point, I believe the flat plasma sets will be within a consumers price range as well as the digital standard should be in place.

I could stand to loose the screen protector due to the glare...otherwise, A-1, period.
