Strength:

16:9 ratio; picture clarity

Weakness:

it is large

This is a 'table' model, even though most pictures show it on a stand designed for it. This is a good model to have if you have a smaller room and if you need to put it on a stand in order to connect all the other stuff - DVD, amp, LD, VCR, etc. I paid to have it delivered and installed, especially since they put the AV stand together at the same time.

This is the first large screen TV and first RPTV I've owned. When I had to repair my 15 year old Sony floor model, I decided it was time to move up. The HDTV-ready factor was a big influence, but more important, the picture was fantastic, both in the showroom and at home. Like other writers, I've spent time playing all my DVD's. It seems that with it's HDTV potential and component input connections, this unit is future proof to a high degree. The remote is a little limited in terms of the number of components it can learn - I had to choose between DVD and LD - but that's not a big deal to me. I too was a little concerned about the 7" guns, but was told that there are internal improvements to compensate - I didn't get technical with the salesman. The next move is to a progressive scan DVD - soon!!

No warm up...instant on
beautiful picture

Weakness:

None so far

We purchased a 46805 two months ago and it had the habit of just going out without warning...puff! and it was gone, black. He also said the best HDTV sets in order of least amount of service calls were as follows Hitachi, the best, followed by Toshiba, Panasonic, Mitsubishi, stay away from Zenith, JVCs, Sony, RCAs...Samsungs in the middle of the pack....obviously only one repair man;s opinion but hey...he should know. After about three times (letting it cool down before restarting)it died. The repairman said they have had a lot of trouble with 805 units and Mits was backordered on the power boards that seemed to be going out. I told him I cannot justify putting in another "bad" powerboard and went back to my local dealer to spend the extra $500 to get the 807. It has been a great decision. I love the instant on feature and I think the resolution is better. In any case I have not had any power board issues. My advice don't get sucked into the $2,499 specially priced sets and get a real champion the 46807....

Weakness:

Cable broadcasts, not enough viewing format options, 28" deep

Now I'm a total novice when it comes to home theater, but so far, I am very pleased with my purchase. I ordered the 40" Toshiba (TW40x81) 3 months ago from buyitnow.com because the price was good ($1990) and it would have fit better in my living room (only 18" deep vs. 28"), but when it was still back-ordered last week, I canceled the order and went to my local store and picked up this Mitsubishi for $2230 (plus $249 for the 5-year service plan) and some piece of mind. I also bought the matching Mitsubishi stand (WB-46805) which elevates the set to the perfect viewing level if you're sitting on just about any couch or chair.

I bought some new high-end cables to go along with the new set and hooked it all up:
Denon AVR-2800 receiver
Toshiba 5109 progressive scan DVD player
Klipsch Quintet Micros (4)
Klipsch KSW-12 subwoofer
DirecTV

I did the relatively easy 64-point convergence and used the Video Essentials DVD to adjust the color. The color looks fine to me, but I still may have a technician come out and adjust it if needed (free with service plan).

When I watch TV, I only use the satellite. Cable broadcasts are terrible, but the guy who helped me hook it all up told me it was a cable company issue, not a TV one. This doesn't make sense to me because my cable reception was fine on my old TV, so I am going to have to do some more investigation. The only time that cable reception is important to me is for the Picture-in-Picture features. Anyways, I think the (DirecTV) picture is superb. The picture is noticeably better than on the 32" Toshiba I had been using. I have had no problems whatsoever thus far. I watch in either the standard TV 4:3 mode (with the vertical grey bars on the sides), or in zoom mode, which cuts a little off the top and bottom of the picture. The zoom mode is great for certain pay-per-view movies that would normally appear in letterbox format. Of course it would be nice if all broadcasts were for 16:9, but until then, I can make due with these options.

When I play DVDs with my Toshiba 5109, I am floored. I can't imagine a picture could be any cleaner. It looks perfect! I have only played a handful so far, but every one looks the same - flawless.

The features of this TV seem rich and easy to use. The Picture-in/on-Picture features are great - far better than on the Toshiba TW40x81. I use the side-by-side (POP) feature quite a bit (with channels that have OK cable reception). There are a couple minor tweaks I would recommend for the remote, but for the most part, I think it was well designed.

I am especially pleased that I went with the 46" TV vs. the 40" Toshiba because the visual impact of a 46" is simply greater. Anything smaller wouldn't seem very impressive and anything larger would have overpowered my medium-sized living room.

I highly recommend this set for anyone looking for an HD-ready rear projection TV at the smaller end of the size spectrum. At around $2500, I believe it is a great deal.

Weakness:

Picture(in home)sound,aspect ratio modes

I purchased this set 4 days ago and I am bitterly disappointed. First, the people I bought it from did not have anyone who knew how to set it up. They could not get the doors installed on the stand properly. I purchased a RCA DTC100 reciever with the set and it is still not installed. They could not get it to work. They went through 3 cables from the receiver to the tv and finally decided to try another receiver. They have yet to come with that one. I have local cable and the picture is horrible.I can live with the fater images on scan and even the zoom but the quality of the picture is absolutley pitiful. It looked great in the store,I would imagine because they were connected to a different source.
The sound is poor at best. My last tv had a Bose sound system and I can definitely hear the difference. There is a constant buzz coming from the speakers that can be heard even over the sound of the program currently playing.
I have 3800.00 invested with no return. I have to find a way to make this work. All and any suggestions will be appreciated. I am not a technical type person and reading the manuals is somewhat confusing. I did learn enough to discover that the delivery persons had my cable box and vcr connected wrong. I have the 5 year warranty and it looks like I will need to stert using it before the new smell is gone. I was torn between the samsung 55" and this one. I chose this one mainly because of size. I can see now I may have been better off getting the larger Sansung and rearranging my great room. Anyone looking at these, look and listen extremely close before you buy.

Strength:

16x9 screen, lower price, fits on 24" wide table, progressive input, bright screen

Weakness:

High power consumption, power supply problem

Everything looked great (for an average, unsophisticated viewer like me) until three days after I received the set (and after about 8 hours of use), the power supply shorted-out (according to the repair guy) and my screen died. He had to order a new chip and resistor, which as of today has not arrived), so I've been stuck with a huge paperweight in my living room for the past week and 1/2. I purchased the set after the retail price dropped (I even got it $100 less than the advertised price), so with the price savings, I purchased a 3-year in-house repair service. Given my personal history with the set, I'd recommend the extended in-house service.

Assuming that the power supply problem is the only thing wrong with the set, I'll be very happy with it, especially the low-profile cabinet and film-like picture. The overall rating will depend on the long-term reliability of the set, which so far is questionable.

stand

as most of the reviewers have noted the picture on this set is great, i have had none of the problems anyone has had, the only problem i have noticed is the convergence does need to be fine tuned quite a bit, at least for the first few weeks.
as for the internal speakers everyone is whining about, what tv has good speakers. if you are going to spend this kind of money on a tv for a hometheater, i would hope you already have or are planning to buy at least an ok system to enjoy with a great picture.
I watch a lot of tv, and the mitsu has been great, at least for me. just take the time to set it up properly, and do yourself a favor and use the video essentials calibrating tool ar something similar.
good luck

buy the way the only draw back to this set is price of the particle board matching stand, it is the prefect height and size for this tv, and finding another one even in this price range is hard. oh well

This is my second review. I thought I owed it to Mits to update the very poor review I gave this set when I first bought it.At first I was disapointed but after much research and with the help of some very helpful people at hometheaterspot.com I now have a beautiful picture and awesome hd feed. The first thing I had to do was get rid of cable and go to directv. This made a hugh difference. After that I had to,with the help of ht spot,Adjust to center the screen in the service menu. I then had green lines on the screen. After researching this I found that my hd receiver,RCA DTC-100 had a decoder problem and rca replaced the receiver, under warranty. I had no convergence problems.I have finally ended up with a hdtv that I was looking for when I bought this set. The days are gone when you just go into the store, buy a tv,bring it home and kick back to enjoy. It may get like that again when hdtv is more advanced but early on I think most will have to either learn enough to make their own adjustments or hire someone to do it for them.
By the way,I also had very poor sound on this tv. I corrected that by buying a Pioneer digital home theater system and now have great sound.
Anyone considering this tv I would not recomend getting the stand. I paid 250.00 for it and to be honest I would not give 25.00 for it at a flea market if I had it to do over. It is a very cheaply made piece of furniture.
I gave this tv one star before, but now I will have to give it 4 stars. Mits still can do a better job with the sound and picture. For the money though, and for those wanting to break in to hdtv, this is not a bad deal.

Strength:

Picture is great when attached to satellite; awesome with DVD; table model is very versatile; easy to configure; great for smaller rooms or large rooms. Mitsubishi service :-)

Weakness:

Earlier (late 1999 & early 2000) models have picture and power supply problems. Check the back panel of "your" new TV for the Mfr date.

I reviewed many brands (Sony, Rca, Hitachi, Toshiba) for the workin' man and, after 13 loooooooong months, I decided that the picture, size and price of this set were right for me. The first set mfr date was 10/99. I had it home and set up for 5 days before the picture developed vertical ghost lines on the left and right side of the screen. After 2 weeks of juggling appointments, I met the tech at home and he confirmed that the set needed replacement. Set #2 arrived the first week of August and lasted 6 days before it refused to come on due to the power supply. Set #2 mfr date was 04/00. After 2 tech visits, the tech was finally able to convince the customer service dept to replace this set also.

Set #3 was mfr in 07/00. I have this set since the middle of August and I could not be happier with the DVD experience this thing delviers. I don't have the HDTV decoder, yet, but I will add it in the spring. Satellite TV picture is much better than cable on this set.

I have seen and even adjusted a couple of the store sets I looked at to see what a real-world HDTV picture would look like on the 46805 and I would put the picture up against any set costing $500- $1000 more.

If you want to experience near cinema quality movies on DVD, try this set. Have it pro-claibrated or do it yourself with V E and sit back and enjoy.

Remember, make sure the Mfr date is at least 6/00 or later.

this review is for the 2001 Mits WT-46807.
originally i was going to get the Tosh 40H80 but got tired of waiting and since the Mits was coming sooner i opted for the Mits. i must say that after living with the 46" screen for a while i'd never go smaller.
i've had my WT-46807 about seven weeks and after nonstop tinkering, tweaking, Avia calibrating and disabling svm, i finally reached a point where i felt i got the picture as good as it's going to get without a pro calibration. so i had some friends over to watch a couple of dvd's via my Tosh 5109 progressive and a very nice surround sound set up. i guess my tinkering paid off because what i kept hearing over and over again was how awesome the picture was and how impressed
everyone was. btw overscan and geometry etc. were right on the money out of the box. unless something breaks, i'm very happy with this set. i don't have hdtv yet but my main reason for the set is dvd's anyway. cable just doesn't give this set a chance to shine but it has the capability of producing absolutey beautiful images.
