Strength:

Incredible image quality on progressive inputs! Set does 720p natively -- this is *slick*! Speakers can be used as center channel.

Weakness:

Goosey remote. Internal line doubler is noisy on component inputs. No easily accessible advanced convergence controls.

I'd wanted an RPTV ever since I was twelve years old (back when a 46-inch set cost $2500). Twelve years later, I buy this set without ever seeing one beforehand. A leap of faith, you could say. I was impressed by Panasonic's other products (my portable DVD-LV75 and A120 DVD players) plus I read the glowing reviews here. After a bit of delay in obtaining the set (finding one in stock at a non-astronomical price) I had mine delivered last week. I am awaiting install of my HD6000 setup so I can only comment on the 480 line material thus far.

First, the built-in line doubler is good -- but not as good as the doublers in the Pioneer Elite sets. Actually, I take it back. For some reason, the Panasonic's line doubler lends itself very well to cable/OTA NTSC signals. If you're watching non-digital NTSC from your local non-HD affiliates or watching cable, you'll be very pleased! It works better than any Sony, Mitsubishi, or Pioneer I've seen. Hardly any artifacting or weird upconversion problems. However, if you intend to watch DVDs, you might be a little disappointed when using an el-cheapo standard interlaced DVD player. First, the link from the inputs to the line doubler is noisy and you'll get some wacky horizontal streaking under high-contrast situations. This doesn't seem to affect ANT/cable inputs. Weird. Once I added my progressive scan DVD player, all the problems disappeared and the set is spot-on perfect -- rivaling the best Mitsubishi and Elite sets for a significant price cut.

The set also ships with very good color/grey balance. I would hesitate to have ISF do anything to this set other than adjust the convergence and/or overscan. The picture is fantastic out of the box!

Despite the noisy line doubler, this is an extremely solid set! When you get your HDTV decoder installed, the line doubler wont even be an issue since material will be in 480p, 720p, or 1080i to begin with (thus no conversion necessary).

The fact that this set does 720p natively is enough to sway my opinion fron any Mitsubishi or Elite set.

I disagree with another comment that said the build quality of the cabinet was poor. Mine seems fine, as good as the Mitsubishis.

Highly recommended!

Strength:

Great picture and a great price!

Weakness:

Manual does not help much

I have been shopping for a widescreen HDTV-ready set for a few months now. I thought I had it narrowed down to the Toshiba TW56X81 and the Mitsubishi WS-55807, when I read the reviews here for this Panasonic. I was delighted to find out that not only was this set better reviewed than the others, but was also less expensive! Check AOKNet's deal for $2989 with free shipping. Best deal I found on the net. (By the way, the shipping company was excellent).

Right out of the box, the picture on this set was great. I did not have to do any kind of adjustments or anything like that (although I am sure there are some real videophiles out there who would insist that it is nit perfect). I have also seen comments on here about the need for progressive scan DVD players or external line doublers, neither of which I have. For those of you with a regular DVD player like I have, I was very satisfied with the picture and did not notice any scan lines or whatever. If you have been thinking about buying a big screen, this is it!
