Picture Quality is simply breathtaking

Simply the finest projection TV available today. The 710 has it all from an almost flawless picture, ease of setup, build quality, looks and flexibity. The picture quality when watching DVD material is the best I have ever seen, better than any Sony, Mitsubishi or Toshiba unit I have seen. Setup is easy and navigating with the remote is a snap. Could be the first Pioneer unit I have owned with a decent remote. Read Leo's review below for a more detailed look at this fine product. If you can write the check and have a large enough room, the is the HD Television to buy.

Strength:

Picture quality. Ease of use.

Weakness:

A bit Pricey but worth it

We have had this unit for about 2 months now. I extensively researched all of the HDTV ready large screens TV's before making this purchase and thought that quality and picture wise, this set seemed to be the best.

I can begin by saying that everytime I walk by it I stare at it like a little kid peeking into the toystore window!
This is a beatiful set even when turned off. It is finished very nicely. But lets talk about what's important: Picture, Picture, Picture. What a view. If you haven't read about it, this set comes with a built-in "line doubler". My understanding of what this does is that it basically takes ALL incoming signals and doubles the lines it uses for its display. This takes out those visible lines that you can see when viewed up close. This brings out an excellent picture with almost all types of signal input. The only exception to this might be a VCR and outdoor antennae and that's just because of the quality picture that you begin with.

We do not even have a progressive scanner DVD and the DVD's look incredible. I'm debating whether or not we really need it. Satellite TV picture is very good.

TV has 4 different 'modes' to view a picture. Natural wide, Cinema Wide, Zoom, natural and 4:3. We usually watch everything in Natural wide or Cinema wide. Natural wide stretches the edges of the picture and not too much the middle so the image does not look "stretched out". Cinema wide is the same with a little bit of more zoom to the whole picture. Zoom is more zoom on top of this but sometimes the pictures just doesn't look right because of the streching. natural looks like a streched out version of a 4:3 signal but OK with widewision DVD's.

Another big plus on this set is that the picture does not seem to fade when viewing the TV from the side. It delivers a very crisp, bright picture all around.

Sound from the TV itself is OK. But for most everything we use the surround sound system we have.

It has all in inputs and outputs that you could ever need.

Remote control is OK. It has different buttons for each input type so you don't have to cycle through them. I don't use it since I have a Pronto programable/learning remote.

The picture looks pretty good out of the box, but I would recommend, as does most folks, that you have it calibrated. This was done by the person who I bought it from and took about 30 min to do. The manual also explains how to do it yourself.

I also recommend that you have a decent size room for this. We sit approx. 13 feet from the set. and this seems adequate
any closer though, might be detrimental to the picture quality.

Overall, I think that this is the best purchase that I've done in a long time and well worth the money. It is quite more expensive than most sets but I beleive that it is totally worth it and will not need to upgrade anything (except getting the HD decoder box) when HDTV hits mainstream

Strength:

Stunning picture. Can be viewed in the daytime. Beautiful cabinet.

Weakness:

Heavy, expensive, big box.

The best picture on a RPTV that I have ever seen. Blows away the competition (including plasma). The Mitsubishi diamond series does not even come close. I would put this up against any tube TV also. Clearly, any other RPTV would be a step down. The Pioneer is truly a reference piece. The things that I noticed right away were the increased detail, depth and amazing brightness. When there is a lamp in the movie, my old Sony only showed a picture of that lamp, but not the bright light of it. With the Pioneer, lights and lamps look so bright that they actually light up my room! Flashlights in a film pointed at the viewer make you squint. Amazing. Also, no bleed over from a black image to a light one. I use it for DVD's (with progressive video into it) and digital cable TV. For those wondering, I found it is better to have the DVD player do the progressive processing than feeding the TV an interlaced signal and having the TV do the conversion. If you have a DVD with progressive output, use it. If you do not, then buy one.
The DVD's look almost as good as true HD and the digital cable TV now looks like DVD used to look. I use it without the protective screen to eliminate the glare it causes. Buy this TV. At first the price seems a bit high, but you will soon forget about that after you begin watching your DVD collection all over again.

Strength:

Awesome picture in all formates and sources

Weakness:

It's heavy

I'm not going to comment on the remote or the internal speakers (I don't use them). What is important and why most people buy this set is the picture, it's fantastic!!

I use this set to view DVDs and over he air broadcast using digital cable. I have yet to actually see true HD, but plan to purchase the new sat receiver that decodes HD. The cable reception varies from good to terrible in my area and is dependant on the station. HBO and Showtime are usually always acceptable. The wonderful thing about this TV is it makes everything (all sources) look good. the line doubler is so good you feel as though you are watching a 3D film. DO NOT wast your money on a progressive scan DVD!! The electronics in this set are far superior to any DVD's progressive scan.

There is no distortion viewing 4:3 sources in any of the wide screen formats. I've had this set for just a few weeks and I can't stop thinking what a great investment!

Buy one and it will make you a happy person. I'm giving this product 5 stars, but it far exceeds the other 5 star rptv's reviewed in this site.

Strength:

It's Big...It's Black... and It's Beautiful!!

Weakness:

Cost too much money, but what the hell..wife hates it.

I just got this thing and it is the best picture of all the sets that I have looked at such as
The new panasonic rptv
The new mitsubishi rptv
The new toshiba rptv

the 6500 Kelvin setting is pretty darn close to 6500 kelvin and the doubler in the set is better than the 700 (which is no slouch at all) color fidelity at the edges is excellent, velocity scan modulation options are very cool and work well. I am getting a new hughes satellite direct tv plus dish that will allow me to pull HDTV from direct tv and I CANNOT WAIT!! With DVD the set is incredible, using a CAL CL-25. the only set that was close was the panasonic but off angle viewing with the pioneer was noticeably better. If you have the cash, I believe, this is the set.

Line Doubler, Finish, versatility.

Weakness:

I've had this TV for about a month now and it has been terrific. I haven't gotten it calibrated yet, but it looks great already, especially for such a large screen, where you're bound to spot inperfections.

DVD looks spectacular. It is really amazing how smooth and natural the picture can look on a 64" screen. DirecTV looks great sometimes, lousy other times - but that is attributed to DirecTV's compression on certain channels and on certain days, what else is new... I happen to watch a lot of DirecTV and the zoom modes are very versatile and really make 4:3 material very watchable. The ability to scroll the vertical picture is clutch when you have a zoom mode on and a score is just cut off the top or bottom.

I am waiting for more STBs to come out before gettting the HDTV decoder, but I can only imagine how good it will look.

It truely is a great TV, and on top of it all, the cabinet looks great too. Pricey TV, but terrific.

This projection TV is worth every penny. I paid $6150 + 350 for S&H. DVD video display with Toshiba 3109 is extremely realistic. I am still debating whether it is even necessary for me to get a Progressive Scan DVD player.
