Strength:
Picture quality
Weakness:
Unproven technology. A bit of gamble for $4,000. I have been waiting for two decades to buy a big screen tv. The early front and rear projections had those blue outlines and blurry pictures that were absolutely annoying. Then when it seemed the technology was approaching acceptablity, the move to 16:9 and HDTV caused yet another delay in my purchase plans. New technologies, albeit unproven with time, have finally reached the point where it is now almost as enjoyable to watch a movie at home as it is in the movies. DLP seems to be the best approach for the money that I have auditioned. Paired with the Samsung 931DVD player with the DVI connection, a real synergy occurs that is very cost effective. If the unit has a decent lifespan, I think it is well worth the price. |

Strength:
Display brightness, split screen PIP, Discrete inputs, color rendering, design of television (small footprint), DVI input (wish it had more than one), user-replaceable bulb, no burn in problems.
Weakness:
Discrete codes are not on the remote. I think Samsung forgot to add these to the remote or didn't want to make a remote with these features because they assume people would be using the tv with a third party home theater remote. DLP is the best available and affordable technology in the marketplace. First of all, burn in is not an issue with DLP. Secondly, the screen is bright and can be viewed at extreme angles without degredation. The bulb in this DLP is rated to last 10,000 hours and is user-replaceable. Television looked good out of the box but I tweaked with the AVIA Home Theater CD. This television also has discrete inputs but the remote supplied does not contain the discrete buttons. Discrete Inputs is the major difference between the new Samsung DLP televisions and the older models. The only way I see to make use of the discrete inputs is by using a remote that can be programmed with the discrete codes without having to use the TV remote. I purchased the Harmony SST-768 which is making use of the discrete codes. The discrete codes were programmed into the remote via the internet. I think that the Harmony remote is the best remote on the market but I will save that discussion for the remote review section. This 56" tv is the best tv I have seen and I have auditioned many. Another nice feature is the split screen PIP. This is especially useful when one person wants to play PS2 and the other person wants to play Xbox. This is something that my brother and I have done many times. Although I utilize the receiver sound and he gets the TV sound. We each tune out each others sound and it works really well. That takes me to the next subject, the sound on the television. I am surprised that Samsung invested time and money to put in decent speakers and audio tweaking capabilities into the television. I rarely use the speakers but when I do, it is incredible how great they sound. I am currently using the TV with a Samsung DVD (HD-931) player that up-converts to HD resolution. The picture is crisp, bright and you begin to see many colors that you have never experienced on a television set. The television produces black levels very well. The black is actually black not dark gray like some other types of televisions. I compared using component cables and the DVI cable with the same DVD player and there was a noticeable difference in sharpness, detail and color rendering. I have not yet used the PC input on the back of the television. The number of inputs available on this television is incredible. Although I wish that Samsung with have put more than one DVI input on this TV. In the next couple of months when I get my DISH PVR 921 Hi-Definition receiver, I am going to decide whether I use it with a component cable or if I purchase A DVI switcher and use both HD receiver and DVD player with DVI. DVI is the way to go since the signal is digital all the way and does not get converted to analog. I don't think any other television on the market has more than one DVI input since it is expensive technology. They will in the future. This DLP televison is part of my home theater which includes: Denon AVR-5700 All Paradigm Reference Speakers Studio CC Studio ADPS Studio 80s Servo Subwoofer The Samsung DLP was the final piece to the incredible home theater puzzle that I have been creating for the past few years. This is the only DLP that I have seen that has a shelf that can fit my Studio CC Center channel which is pretty large. I will be posting a picture of my Home Theater soon. |

Strength:
So Clear with detail. Puts a new definition in playing video games on a big screen.
Weakness:
None found. The picture was great out of the box. I used the Avia disc to tweek her in. Then I called my wife to check out the picture. She was totally impressed and her final comment was "Maybe it isn't too big" Similar Products Used: Sony, Toshiba |

Strength:
Great picture.
Weakness:
Some people see rainbow effect with DLPs, but nobody does in my family. Great HDTV. I think DLP is the best technology today. Provides good picture with analog cable, great picture with digital cable and DVD, and absolutely incredible picture with high-def cable (looks 3D). Great viewing from side angle (unlike rear projection). No burn-in problems. Similar Products Used: 35 inch RCA TV |

I'm very excited to have gotten my hands on one of these amazing TVs...if you can call it a TV. It is truly amazing with progressive scan DVD and as a monitor. Quality is good with DirectTV although I'm looking forward to having an HDTV receiver installed by my cable company this week. There are plenty of tweaks available on avsforum although I've not employed any as of yet. This things is amazing...and I have a feeling it is only going to get better. Buy it if you have the cash to spare! |
