Weakness:

Only has 1 progressive input, have to view infront at certain angle

Ok I just go this one and I was waiting for price to go down. I have gotten sony products and so I went with sony.

My biggest problem so far is that you have to view it basiclly from the front or else the picture can suck.

My next problem was that once I got it, just a couple of days ago, I found out that when I do get a HDTV reciver I will only have 1 input for progressive scan. Thus my DVD player I just got the Pioneer DV434P will have to be unhooked and rehooked whenever I want to use it. That is going to suck so I may return it if another brand will not have this problem with a good picture.

AS far as cable goes I have digital At&t for now and it is so so but I think I had a better picture with my 27 tirintron.

The DVDs look great on the Pioner DV434p since it is progressive I had the sony DVP-s550d not progressive and it made a differnce.

Now I must decide if it is worth the money to keep this. At the store they had it hook up to HDTV and it looked great but here I do not have it and will not get it until I finish paying for this TV.

The thing that is really getting me is that HDTV is sent out if 720p or 1080i thus if I get a 720p sent then the TV will down convert it to 480p! Thus if I keep it i have to hope that 1080i will be the standard but it is too early too tell thus I may just wait until the format of 1080i or 720p is made or look to see if other TVS under 4000.00 have 720p and 1080i and no convervission occurs so there would be no loss of data.

I have just had it for 4 days and I have 30 days to decide if it meets my needs since Circuit City gives you 30 days to return and pay no restocking fees. So I will play with it for another 20 or so days and see if it is really worth it or if another product has 720p and 1080i that has move than 1 input for compostion that is progressive and does not down convert 720p to 480i.

My concern is that I hear that DVD players in future may go to 720p thus I will lose data but if they ever go 1080i then I would be ok but that is in the future.

Thus it maybe too early to have this set since the future is not clear on the format. The 2006 deadline for HDTV is also a ways off.

Weakness:

converts 780p to 480p HDTV mode

Ok I made a typo the tv converts 780p to 480p not 780p to 480i!

But still this is my big concern along with only 1 composite progressive input, the other compostie input is not progressive mode.

Will still play with it and let you know if I think it is worth keeping.

Dim Picture, Progessive 480p DVD causes freeze frame, Only 1 Component Vid Input

Ok I am a Sony die hard... but this set leads me to believe that Sony is now riding on their name. Not Quality of Picture, Features, or in General. 1 mo I owned this set, auto focus went out. 2nd mo power supply blew. 3mo blue tube failed. Sony techs have no explanation why my $1k Denon Progressive DVD player is causing freeze frames and pixilization. This set is in a bright room, but even with the blinds down or an night brightness is poor - similiar to a DLP projector.

Needless to say the Sony has authorized a full refund for this set. The good news is that Sony sent a letter of apology. I would prefer Sony to make a decent product again. Sad but true, looks like Pioneer, Hitachi, & Samsung now have the upper hand in rear screen projection TV. As of today I have narrowed my replacement choice between the Hitachi and Samsung. The Hitachi has Dolby Digital but only 1 year tube warranty. The Samsung has two year tube, but only Dolby Prologic. Both have an incredibly bright clear picture and I am saving $1500.

If you are a Sony, Mits, or Pioneer dedicated... look at the HDTV alternatives above... even you will be shocked at the picture quality and brightness difference. You can always remove the name plate and replace with your favorite. Your friends will never know... For now I have to give this Sony a D-.

i bought this tv 13mths ago and was very impressed. however i just upgraded from 5yr old sony dvd to the 9000es dvd.the picture in progressive mode is more grainy and pixelized than old dvd.i have read nothing but excellent reviews on this new 9000es,but i am getting a vcr type picture.needless to say i am thinking the problem lies with this tv.i have always been a fan and owner of sony products, but with these problems on more expensive equipment my loyalty is leaving. i have read on these reviews that some people are experiencing an excellent picture with this exact same setup[kp57xbr10w-dvp9000es].please tell me the exact setup configuration you used,i am using monster power conditioner, monster reference component cables.also have tried every setting on dvd player and i havent been able to get a great picture.alot of these reviews claim 480p could be the problem.by the way i called sony tech support and they told me this tv does not support progressive dvd.i called dealer they said it does.who to believe?anyway if anyone has a solution please let me know.i read the reviews often.

This set is awesome. So far I've had it about four months w/o any problems. The picture is incredible. It blows away all my friends rear projections sets (RCA, Toshiba, etc). I can't believe all the negative reviews...so far I rate it a 10 on a 10 scale. I hope it continues to work well.

Also it works great w/ the Toshiba SD-3750 Progressive Scan DVD player...so it will work w/ other brand DVD progressive players contrary to what other people here have stated. I bought the Toshiba and saved $100 over the Sony model.

To everyone who has complained about a soft or dim picture with this TV set:

Have you had your set ISF calibrated?

Do you have an older home with 60AMP service to your house?

Is your electrical box and outlet grounded properly?

Do you have other electrical appliances on the same circuit that generate a lot of noise or cause the lights to dim?

I'm not kidding about this stuff. It really is important. It can mean the difference between crap, and a TV that will make everyone who sees it envious.

I wish I could have the disappointed people over for a movie so they could see the stellar picture this TV can produce if they only took the time to get their TV tweaked by an ISF calibrator.

Find out who in your area is an ISF (Image Science Foundation) certified, and have them come over and calibrate your TV. You won’t regret it, and you will learn a lot.

Before you have your set calibrated, make sure that you purchase a good Progressive Scan DVD player & true 75-ohm component cables. (The Sony 9000ES is the best DVD player for your TV).

As good as Sony made this product they can't stop people from banging it around during shipping or in the showroom. This can often affect the picture quality. A little adjustment can make a world of difference.

I have instructions from the Sony manual on doing your own convergence in Adobe format. If you would like me to send it to you, let me know.

Warning! You can really screw up your TV by changing the settings in service mode so be careful. I recommend watching the ISF calibrator converge your TV. If you feel you can do it let him show you how.

Convergence Tip: Turn off the red and blue guns and get your geometry perfect with the green gun. Then lay the red grid on top of the green grid. Then turn the green gun off and lay the blue dots on top of the red. Blue is a hard color to see in any light. With the green gun turned off it’s easy to see the blue dots line up on the red.

My two cents after owning this set for a year, is really look hard at the competition. I have had the set adjusted more than 3 times this last year alone to get it picture perfect. Then it slips away... I am not saying that with hatefullness, just borderline disatisfaction....

Ironically I too recently purchase the Denon 2800 $800 retail progressive scan DVD player, and it defintly does not work with this set. I replaced it with a Sony and no problems thus far.

In fairness you should always adjust all sets you review in the showroom and MAKE the sales person hook up a PS DVD player to make your final assessment.

I just hook up Sony 9000ES DVD player to this set and am even happier than before with my purchase. I also tested Sony NS700P-cheap alternative progressive DVD player and it also did improve picture dramatically. If you don't mind having SACD now, I think NS700 will do nicely at affordable price range-$300-$350 which I think is a steal. I now can watch zoom & wide zoom mode without noticing much loss of picture qualty.

Product review should be based on actual working model not defects. Defective model should be returned and not be reviewed here with such a hateness.

Once this TV set up properly, it displays truely outstanding picture when compare to others mentioned above except Pioneer Elite Pro that cost $2,000 more. I have yet to see any other competitors' in this price range display sharper or brigter picture than this set. Please do some adjustment using any commercially available product like Avia/Video Essential before you complain about your TVs'picture quality. I followed Ken's advice and purchase Monster Power HT2000 and cables. And he was right, those do make diffrences.

Please do adjusting or calibrating and purchase nice progressive DVD player. Go with satelite not crappy cable.
Use highest possible connection between components not just RF. If VCR is your only home theater ticket, go buy something else for half the price. All Toshiba RPTV have rave reviews but not Sonys. It just seems that all Toshiba reviewers know TVs better than Sony reviewer because TOSHIBA RPTVs ARE NOT BETTER IN ANY CATEGORY THAN SONYs.

*Toshiba 56H80 and 65H80 were tested side by side with Sony before I made my buying decision.

I purchased this 2001 Sony projection about 1 month now and so far it has proved to be flawless. The design of this unit is great. I have seen others and they are too boxey. The picture quality is outstanding for DVD. I have not tried the HD due to a lack of a satellite box. This set was primarily purchased to watch dvd movies as I have quite a collection. I bought a set of monster component cables which increased the color separation and pic quality incredibly. I have noticed that not all movies are true 16x9, which unfortunately, causes the black bars on this widescreen. On the true 16x9 movies, I feel like I'm at the local cineplex. Nothing beats the array of features available on this set to adjust the picture. Overall, I feel it is worthy of a full 5 value rating.
