Strength:

Got a "deal of a lifetime" price at Best Buy---the 18-yr-old sales associate got flustered and misquoted the price. To their credit, the store Manager honored the price!

Weakness:

For my useage, none.

My family and I love this tv! While more expensive than an "analog" set (is this the right word?), the clarity is amazing. We originally purchased the 53" version, but it was out of stock so we took delivery of the 61" to "test drive" it. My wife and I sit only 11-ft from the screen, but the picture is still very crisp. We watch lots of dvd's thru our Toshiba Progressive Scan player and are constantly amazed at the picture. When viewing the tv for the first time, friends and coworkers always ask "How is the picture so good?!?"
One caution---weak stations will look proportionately worse on the big screen. If this concerns you, a big screen television may not be for you.
This television is exceptional--no debate!

Strength:

Excellent Picture Quality, Stylish Design, Ease Of Use

Weakness:

Protective Screen Creates A Lot Of Glare / Reflections
Only 1 HD input

All in all very happy with the set. Especially for $2211 price tag. Picture quality excellent, especially with DVD.
Standard TV looks a little fuzzy, but that is to be expected, you can only blow up a low res signal so much before it starts looking grainy. The better the signal, the better the picture & this TV does a great job with anything you throw at it.

Sony should have done a better job with the protective screen. I don't think the XBR models have this much glare / reflections. Also, I will need to buy an external switch someday so I can use a DVD player, and a HD Set top box. Just be aware of these 2 items. If you can live with them, you will be exceptionally happy with your purchase.

Strength:

'anamorphic squeeze' feature

Weakness:

weak circuitry

Unfortunately there have been short periods were I have a watchable TV. I've had the CRT's replaced once. the IRT-board once and the A board twice. The problem is I get occasional picture cut-out (half the screen goes dark then the whole picture distorts horribly accompanied by a popping noise). Of course this won't happen when the repairman is there. Had to cam-cord the problem for them to troubleshoot it. They now want to take the TV away to their shop and analyze it before I exercise the 'Lemon Policy'. Very hard to get Sony Service to call me back.

Strength:

Picture size and quality.

Weakness:

None to this point.

I have read other reviews that rip on the remote, however I would think that if you have a tv of this size that you would also have a dvd player/receiver etc. I use my receiver remote to control all of my audio components as well as my tv and dish. Even if that was not the case the remote is easy to function. Overall this is a wonderful tv and will not be useless after a couple of years due to the HDTV ready component to it. You may see cheaper tv's out there but you get what you pay for and this tv by far blows away the picture quality and input/output options of any lesser or comparably priced tv. I have had this tv for over a year and we have not had a single problem with it as of yet. We use the component video inputs for our dvd and the s-video for my PS2 these bring out what this tv was meant to be able to do, crystal clear pictures with amazing detail.

Strength:

Nice clean picture for dirt cheap. Nothing comaes close at this price.

Weakness:

I can't get this remote to operate my Sony receiver or my Playstation 2, and the glare is pretty bad in all but low light.

I was a little worried about getting an older model that's been discontinued, but I couldn't pass it up. I was able to get the 61HS10 for less than a 53HS30. Cable was a little fuzzy on some channels, so I bought a Radio Shack cable booster and gold plated cables and my cable signal is great (channel 2 is dirty but watchable, an issue with COX cable). Some channels are almost as clean as a DVD (especially ESPN and ESPN2). I use a Playstation 2 with the gold plated component cables into Video 5 for DVD's (Gran Tourismo 3 looks amazing).

The convergence was way off when it was delivered, but 15 minutes in Service mode fixed that. I also turned down the contrast and sharpness and that helped a lot. After the set is warmed up and the noise reduction and DRC do their thing, the picture is great, even with VHS. I thought I was going to need Direct TV or something, but that would be a waste. I'll switch to an HDTV signal when I can get more than 3 stations.

The speakers aren't bad, and are great for watching TV, but movies will leave you wanting more. That's when you'll want to switch over to a nice external surround setup and use the TV as the center channel.

My wife is still getting used to the sheer size of this thing, but I love just sitting and staring at it. By the way, my viewing distance is 11 feet, so those a little farther back will have an even clearer picture. If you're closer than that, you may want to consider the 53HS30 instead.

Strength:

Great picture right out of the box.

Weakness:

Can't bring it camping with me.

So far my family and I feel every night we are at the movies. Right now I'm trying a Rotel RDV-1080 Proscan DVD player and someone correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't see any differance when I switch back and forth between pro & interlace. For now though I'm very impressed with the fact that I can get as good a picture as I do with this "61. All the sales people I talked to, told me to buy a "53 because my room is too small (32x16). I know me and I have to have the the biggest, so I rolled the dice and figured I'd buy this one anyhow. I'm glad I did and I came to the conclusion that these sales people need to take a better look at what they are selling. I realize that most "61 RPTV's have a very grainy appearance, especially closer up, but not this unit.

Strength:

Fantastic picture. Large size makes 16:9 sources nearly as big as 55" widescreen display.

Weakness:

Only one HD component input. Large screen creates a lot of glare.

The TV has a fantastic picture using a DVD player connected through the HD component input. All other sources look pretty good aslo but poor signals are not resolved that well. Since only Video input 5 allows use of the Vertical Compression feature, you will need the ability to do component video switching via your receiver or an external switch if you have more than one 16:9 source such as DVD and HDTV. Seems that most other HDTV manufacturers have 2 HD inputs; don't know why Sony didn't as well.

As far as the glare that everyone has been commenting on here, you can go to the following website at http://home.att.net/~ricardo.david/kp-xxhs10/ where there are step-by-step instructions for removing the protective screen if desired. I haven't tried this yet but those who did said the difference was tremendous in regards to picture clarity and brightness. This site is specifically dedicated to the xxHS10 tv's and provides a good deal of information.

One other problem I have is the large size of the TV as Joel noted in his review. I am unable to get the TV into the room where I would like due to a narrow hallway where I must pivot the TV 90 degress to get it in. Joel, if you wouldn't mind, could you email me at araz321@aol.com to provide more details as to the size of the three pieces when you took your's apart and how complicated the process was. If I do this, I think I could probably fit the TV where I would like. Thanks.

I have rated the TV five starts for value. I feel the Sony is an exceptional performer for the prices. Overall, I gave 4 stars because Sony makes removing the protective screen a lot more complicated than many other manufacurers and for only supplying one HD component input.

Strength:

the obvious.

Weakness:

the remote control, the 1 real component input, the fact that theyre discontinuing this product for a replacement(hs30)

i buy my tv.. figure out that they only give you one real component input.

seeing is how the dvd player, ps2, and dtv all need component inputs.. just one input isnt going to do me well. and the idiots at sony didnt think to make a receiver with both optical i/o AND component i/o.

so now i have to dish out another 800bux to get an hs30.

plus they actually made the remote controls less "handicapped-friendly" on the hs30 so im happy about that.

if anyone knows what my options are regarding component switchers pls email me.

Price,name,hdtv,look of set

Weakness:

need more hdtv hookup

Purchase the set recently, I was looking at the Tosibia 65H80 but got a deal on this and decided for now to stay 4x3. I have to say I never owned a Sony, the picture difference between a Sony and any other tv is huge. It take some getting use to.

On this set I noticed a problem as so as it was wheeled in, there are to white marks behind the protective glass, its almost luke a smear of white on the left side near the head area. The other problem I notice, very poor cable picture, it just looks terribe

I had several RCA and always like the picture, Im actually felt like wheeling my 61 RCA back in. THe Direct TV picture is acceptable , the RCA was better.

On DVD it looks fine, I do not have a progressive scan yet so that should help.

I like the flash focus feature,I hope ther is a more detailed way to get to individual controls because the menu screen does not allow it I see some setup stuff here that I need to try but this set is being returned, I cannot deal with the white marks so Sears is sending a new one, I notied it on the delivery reciept when it came.

Finally, the glare is a killer. I had a protective screen on the rca but never this much glare.

Overall I am not that happy with the picture, build quality or the glare. If anyone has an suggesstions or similiar problems that they fixed please email me.
