Strength:

picture quality and size

Weakness:

lack of multiple component video inputs. Overall quality and support

The TV worked great for about 2 years and then the quality deteriorated. The biggest problem is that it intermittently goes black and flash a diagnostic code of five (5). A SONY recommended technician has been working on it since 5/12/2003 and the problem remains and he now says he doesn't know what the problem is and wants to start replacing boards ontil fixed. SONY Support is terrible and this was an expensive mistake. SONY products go absolete quickly and repair for such products is nearly impossible.

Nice Picture

Try and get one. Sony stopped production

I first saw this at a local store. I actually ordered one. Now I am informed that Sony stopped production. No notice and no explanation. Customer service is completely ignorant. What a useless resource. I am concerned that there may be serious problems with this unit when they won't fulfill current orders and our so secretive. Call me suspicious, but having been a fairly faithful Sony customer all these years, I am going to have to rethink my purchase strategy. Whatever happened to customer service???

Major Problems Since Purchase / Only 1 HD Input

I've had this TV for about a year. I had an issue with a broken board when the tv was received.

Once replaced, I noticed vertical lines when the background was black. Sony agreed and came out to do a fix. All of the TV's have this. While the fix worked for the dark background, I noticed with a white background, two vertical gray bars could be noticed. They have not supplied a fix for this.

Most recently I purchased a sony 9000ES DVD player that has 480p outputs. When hooked up to the HD component inputs, there have been several problems. Sony has confirmed and has stated the microprocessor is bad and needs to be replaced. Not sure if this is an issue with all 65HD1's so I recomend you get a HD source and try it.

Should get the results tomorrow!! Hope this takes care of it for good! Im sick of de-bugging Sony's TV!!

I must say the modes that worked with the HD input, the picture was truly spectacular!!

In response to Ed, Since I got my replacement 65HD1, I have had no problems. I too recently purchased a progressive scan dvd as an upgrade. I had the dvp-s7700, then got the Toshiba SD-9200 prog. And yes, I had to use the HD input (video5). Otherwise you get the split screen, if it does not handle progressive signals.

The picture is incredible...I swap back and forth between interlaced and progressive (still using the HD input and Monster M1000 series component video cables), and it's true, those jagged lines that are were noticible are smooth. A good test is to view a scene that has a dark background, with a bright object with diagonal lines...and as the camera pans across the screen...this is where you will see it.

Anyway, back to the topic. I think the original shipments of the HD1 had problems, and the later ones performed and were manufactured better. I got mine Nov 1999, and my replacement one came Mar 2000. A word of advice, replacing parts will not do it. A Sony master tech took 7 tries (at 4-8 hours each visit) to realize that these TV's have a unique "fingerprint" once shipped from the factory. The parts are born together and must remain together, otherwise, something else will go wrong. Trust me, I had ever single board replaced, and reprogrammed. It does not work. Complain to get it replaced if you are not happy.

Good luck.

This is Sony's latest edition to their HDTV Line. This Incredible 65" Wide Screen TV has a built in HDTV tuner (Converter) and loads of features that will blow you away. Digital Reality Creation and Multi Image Driver make watching a real experience. The TV looks as if it was carved out of a single block. The front is a brushed aluminum with HDTV carved into it. This is the best looking TV to hit the market in years. It is very new and I am lucky enough to get one of the first in NJ... My dealer friend has two more available and then more next month. Please take a good look at this TV It's awesome.turbo@bellatlantic.net

Picture (when working)

Weakness:

Bugs, bugs and more bugs

So I too have had Sony in my house several times and they have been unable, to date, to fix the tv although they are still "working on a fix". I've had this set for a little over a year, and have been de-bugging the TV in my house since I received it. Here's the list of issues:

1) When the background is black, you can see lighter black lines aboyut 5" from either side. Sony fixed this with an interesting on-site 2 hr soldering of capcitors and blue wires. While it fixed the dark background issue, you now see mild gray ones when the picture is bright.

No fix to date.

2) When I hooked up my new sony 9000 progressive scan DVD player to video 5 (only place it works) the picture looked great. I then, using the DVD player, switched it from progressive to interlace and they picture went black. Sony came out, installed a new uProcessor, and it fixed that specific issue. Unfortunatly, I created several new ones. First the picture, when using progressive in "FULL" mode is no longer centered. It's now skewed left. Second, when using "4X3" mode, the lines are hooked at the top of the picture near the gray bars / picture interface.

3) Sony came out and literally replaced the entire right side of the internal electronics - "matched from the factory". When the tv turned on, nothing worked right so I agree with what Mike has stated. They than put the old boards back and the picutre was ok. Once they left, after watching the tv for 30min or so, the picture flashes and eventually goes black.

They are still working on a fix.

They will NOT repalce the tv. I've contacted the office of the president and they refuse to give me a new one stating their policy is to fix not replace.

I've never been so FRUSTRATED in all my life!!

Any ideas????

Strength:

Solid, and quite ominous looking. Everything is automatic, hardly any manual intervention is needed.

Weakness:

Video issues already!!!

I've had this since early November 99. And I have yet to utilize the full potential of the picture quality/clarity. For some reason the picture looked like it didn't have a streamline.smooth color spectrum. For example...if you watch a DVD using Sony DVP-S7700 via Component, or JVC S-VHS 9600U via S-video, or even regular cable via coax. (btw, cartoons are extremely prevelant); and you look at a picture that has shades like the sky or clouds or even greyscales...and at the transition points, it is extremely grainy, and the picture sometimes even twitches. I had the Good Guys tech come out and look at it (and saw everything I described) and he tells me the D/A converter boards (or something like that) needs to be replaced. 4 new cards total was ordered (on Dec 22). He says everything else in the TV is power supply related, so the that wasn't it. It has been two weeks and a master tech will be coming out next wednesday to put it in. I hope this fixes it. I paid $9200 and got a Good guys 4 years in-home extended full warantee.

So at this time, I have a neutral rating. Until I can see the tv at its full potential.

Strength:

Solid design.

Weakness:

Had video problems. This post is an update to my unfortunate experience.

The last post was done by me. Well, I finally got my new TV after numerous attempts (7 repair attempts..then I got fed up and wrote to corporate and regional).

The television is spectacular...amazing to see what I have been missing. I am very pleased with this television and I would recommend it to others. The Philips new 64" HDTV is alright but I wasn't impressed..(the price was the same). THe plastic frame around the screen is removable, but very flimsy. And the arrangement of inputs in the back are haphazardly placed. Not too user friend personally. And talking to some people who have played with that TV, state that it does not like to hold convergence information, and hs to be manually calibrated.

The Sony if far the best for the $10k. Everything is automatic, and nothing to setup. All one touch. The TV does does so much self diagnotics...you can fully utilize right out of the box. Very simple.

Unfortunately, I got a lemon, and had a rough time getting it exchanged for a new one. But I did...it does pay to gripe.

If you have any further specific questions, feel free to email me.
