Pleased with the basic performance, picture is clear, sound is good. Unfortunately, we are on our third unit. The first had the picture go out completely after two months. The second had no sound when we got it home. The third lasted for 13 months then the sound left completely. 12 month warranty.... Waiting to hear from Toshiba. Model 43A10

Strength:

Outstanding picture, sound quality is good, easy set adjustment and alignment, backlit remote.

Weakness:

TERRIBLE repair support from Toshiba factory service center. Replacement parts on terminal back-order.

Good news:
What a picture with component video and DVD!! Every one of my friends who has seen Armageddon and Matrix on this unit has been awe-struck, myself included. Plenty of inputs, good sound with the BBE mode, and a relatively easy-to-use-remote that's backlit.

Bad news:
It died without warning on Dec. 2nd, after two months of use. Worse yet, the part needed to repair it was on a TWO-MONTH factory back-order. Toshiba Factory Service Center was slow to respond ... it took three weeks of constant calling and complaints to get them to take action. They finally agreed on January 15th to let Video Only replace the 43AX60.

Really bad news:
The replacement set wasn't much better than the dead one. New one had a gun alignment problem that could not be corrected. Might have been shipping damage, but who's to say. I was not a happy camper.

Good news:
Video Only took corrective action and offered me a good deal on a 50AX60 for all the trouble I'd been through. I'll report on that one in a couple months :)

Hind-sight:
The 43AX60 would still be in my living room now had it not failed. I was fully satisfied with it, but the sudden death and poor service from Toshiba has given me concerns about their product line. I'm hoping the 50AX60 has better longevity. I bought the performance guarantee from VO just in case it isn't better.

I'd give better point ratings had I not had incredible frustration in dealing with Toshiba Factory Service. Too many 40-minute on-hold waits to speak to a live body!!

My thanks to Video Only for getting in the ball game and making things right!!

Strength:

Great picture for a projection. Good sound. Plenty of features, and a decent remote.

Weakness:

Slightly cheap construction. A little pricey when I got it, but I think they've come down since.

Only problem I've had is the rear cover comming slightly loose. This caused a very annoying rattle when the bass kicked in. I tightened it up with a screwdriver and it's been fine for months since. Wish I had gotten a set with the "colorstream HD", but hind sight is 20/20.

this is an excellent TV. unlike the other reviews, i have never had a problem with this set. i bought the set before christmas 2000, and haven't had a problem yet.

as with most projections, brightness should be a big factor in your purchase. the room that i keep the TV in is relatively dark, with little glare from lamps or windows, so the picture quality is excellent. let me stress that the picture quality of this TV is FAR superior to the sony 43". it has a better filter than the sony, has component video inputs (the sony doesn't). hooked up to a DVD player, the picture is absolutely amazing.

i would recommend this TV to anyone looking for a sub $1500 projection...

this is a follow up to my other review, when i got home and plugged in this tv, the picture was horrible whe i plugged in the dvd player through the commponent plug the screen would bounce, and the convergince was off. I called Brandsmart and they sent a repair guy over, he tried tunning the tv but was unable to get it rite so they picked up the tv a week later and suprisingly had it back to me in less than a week.
now I love this tv, it has a great picture, very sharp once you tune it up aliitle.
for the price of this tv compared to others it is the top of its class.
if i had the money i would have bought a bigger and better tv but i dont so i am very happy with tv.
***here is little trick the tv guy showed me-- on the remote push the mute button, now on the front panel of the tv there is a tv/video button,,with remote in one hand and your finger on the tv button, first prees the mute button again and rite away push the tv/video button. a s should pop up on thr right hand side. now on the remote press th eround button in the middle and the press 7. you will see a test pattern, now using the number part of the remote, use 2 for up 8 for down 4 for left and 6 for right. the three button will change the square from red, blue and green. the five will freeze the color and allow you to converge or adjust the tv for a crisp picture.
for example the blue in the bottom left side is off, okay press 4 numerous times to move left and 8 to move down now press 3 till the box turns blue now press 5 the box will freeze now adjust using the neccesary numbers once you are done with all the adjusting you can also press zero for another screen that will help adjust the blue tube when you are done press the power key on the tv and leave it off for a few seconds. when you turn it on the srceen will be back. if you need more help with this email and i will be glad to help..

hope this helps....

Service

I really like this TV. I personally thought it has the best picture I have ever seen. Although, a few days ago I noticed a bunch of dark blocks (two rows) in the lower center of the screen. Upon further investigation, I can affirmatively say that it is caused by the closed captioning that is included with the Toshiba 43AX60. I called the local service center here, and the serviceman informed me that "There is no doubt that it was caused by the closed captioning, but Toshiba will not cover it under warranty because there is a warning in the manual to not have any stationary images on the screen for an extended period of time." For more information, please go to http://www.thesqueakywheel.com and click on search complaints, in the Show box, select Poor quality complaints, and then click on Search now. Every time a person reads my complaint, and e-mail is sent to Toshiba's customer service department. Which, at this writing, they have blocked my e-mail address. It's a good TV as long as you don't have the closed captioning on...

Weakness:

flimse build,toshiba service guys stink.

i had this set for 5 mins when i say a flaw in the screen. It was faded ,the actual screen with the power off was faded.I kept the set for a month because i got such a good deal on it,i paid 1850.00can.But one night when i was watching hockey i started noticing that the middle 3rd of the screen was lighter then the outsides.Once i noticed this flaw i couldn't stand to watch a hockey game so i called up leons and told them i was severly disappointed and that i no longer wanted this set,
so they sent a repair guy who was like 1000 years old and sayed he couldn't fix what he couldn't see, meanwhile his assistant could see the problem and the old guy insisted it was my lighting in the room . HE was dillusional. All in all the tv had a great picture and toshiba far exceeds other companys such as HITACHI,SONY,RCA and panasonic, but if there is a flaw then its performance has no bearing.

Strength:

Size, picture quality, not a Sony

Weakness:

Not as bright or sharp as tube TV

I got the Toshiba because I heard a lot of bad news about RCA Directv/Sony compatibility problems so all the Sony's were out (not leaving much left). Head to head with the 43" Sony the Toshiba was a better TV anyway. 3DYC filter, better menu system, slightly better picture, more inputs.

This is my first projection TV and it is for the most part an incredible experience, however it does suffer (albeit diminished) from some of the traditional projection drawbacks. It is very sharp from wide viewing angles from side to side but much less range vertically. The focus is not quite as crisp as a good trinitron (to be expected I guess). While very bright for a projection it still isn't in the class of a a WEGA class direct view but it is much bigger and not as heavy.

One problem I have is that some of the preset settings are fairly useless. Movie mode is incredibly dark. They are basically starting points from which you can tweak the settings. Unfortunately, any changes put you in preference mode and you can only save one preference.

The set is incredible for sports and TV and good for movies. It may be too good for some movies because it brings out the imperfections in some older films. Older darker movies like Blade Runner need to really be cranked up to keep from blacking out in darker scenes. I think this is mainly due to the old master film transfered to DVD, after all the film is 20 years old. New DVDs like Gladiator are incredible.

Sound is really good for internal sound only and there are so many input/outputs any connection is a breeze. The remote is very good although sometimes scrolling through the device selection bar is less convenient than just having direct device buttons. I'm a little disappointed that some of the fancy gizmos like menu search and PIP don't work with the DSS but I never expected them to. Why do they even bother with these things when no one can use them anyway?

In summary, it's a damn impressive machine. I hope it keeps working and maybe the picture will improve a little as it breaks in. I'm glad to hear that VideoOnly is good about service in addition to having by far the best price.
