Picture quality is great. I'll be more immpressed when I get digital TV signal. It's easy to use, have 5 kids (and the wife) and you have to make it simple or they will find a way to mess it up.(or complain) The HX has better guns then the H tv's, it is worth the extra money. The tv keeps up with the action. Hockey players are in a solid picture and the lines on the ice do not wave. (this is what turned me off of Sony, the picture was clear but on high action regular programing it could not keep up with the action. It was like watching a super 8 film. And the other sets in this price range just blur or wave the line.) Off angle viewing is excelent for a projection TV. Even with the bigger room someone is on an angle and no one complains.

The clicker has the option of lighing up when you use it. In this feature if makes a buzz, a little anoying. However this must be the norm because someone mentioned about it on another Toshiba set. At low volumes the set's speakers are give poor reception. You have the option of turning them off and using your soroundsound system (this is a strength), but as I mentioned 5 kids make it simple. At louder volumes the speakers work well.

First I have to thank all those who write reviews and to this web site. They have help me to know what to look for and what questions to ask. I don't know if I am an audio enthusiast, but if the definition is someone who wants exceelent quality for a fair and resonable (not cheapest) price, well then that's me. I have had this Toshiba 50HX81(or 82) for 9 months and have had little to no set up requirements. I even moved it to the other side of the house (a bigger room) with no problems. All conections are easy to find and use. I've checked the settings and they are easy to change, however very little needed to be changed. It has just the right number of justification points to keep your set tuned. The regular cable quality t.v. is good, you have 4 options on how you want to watch the picture. If something is broadcast in 16*9 then you can inlage the whole image to fit the screen. It's easy to play with and find your prefrence. I've bought this system with the rest of my new toys, DVD by Toshiba, Receiver by ONKYO, and speakers by PSB. I am extreamly happy with all my purchases, and it all starts in the middle.

Better picture than similarly priced sets from JVC, Sony, Hitachi, etc. Can accomodate a center channel on top, unlike many other manufacturers! Better styling (and picture?) than non-Cinema Series Toshiba sets.

No DVI/HDCP/HDMI, Firewire/i.Link/IEEE1394 connections that newer sets have; newer Toshiba Cinema Series also have even better picture, and can accept 720p signals.

Toshiba (though not as celebrated as Sony among Joe Public) has always made some of the best products at very reasonable prices, in my opinion, and this HDTV is no exception. This is my 3rd Toshiba TV (I've never owned another brand), but my first HDTV --and my first rear-projection TV. It's an awesome improvement from my old 27" direct-view set, to say the least! And it's only relatively recently that I found rear-projection TV's suitable, given the inherent problems of older generations. But until plasma HDTV's or other newer technologies both improve in quality and become more affordable, RP-HDTV's are the way to go, IMHO. While this might not matter to you, it did to me: this set has a solid top that can reasonably accomodate a center channel speaker (such as my Thiel SCS3), unlike most manufacturers (except Mitsubishi).

Great TV,after all,I only have been buying Toshibas.I own 4 Toshibas in my house with the oldest 8 years old.I always check everything on the market before I buy any electronics but when it comes to TV's,I always end up with Toshiba. Great picture,plenty of adjustments and settings,good remote and even great sound.I dont use the internal speaker system but I was blown away when I tested.For those that dont have a good reciever setup,save your self some money,this TV sounds great as it is without home theater. I also, was very happy to see the remote control setup to be easy and I was able to make macros on my Lexicon remote to switch inputs and screen sizes with one touch.In other words,if you want to change lets say the input,just teach your remote to press input+number and that's it. Good set,I will give it 5

Not sure if I like the silver color, I'm used to the traditional black case.

I first purchased the Mitsubishi 55 Gold Plus. It looked good, but was too big for my room. I returned it for the Tos 50hdx82. The Toshiba is so much better. The picture is sharper, there is MUCH less glare on the screen, (almost none at all) and the colors are more realistic. Another great feature of this set is that there is an Input menu rather than having to push the input button each time and cycle through all of the inputs like on the Mitsubishi and the older Toshibas. This is great if you have a remote with Macro capability, since your inputs can be changed along with all of your other settings with the touch of one button. One other thing, the Toshiba is also much less deep and can fit into many more places.

I have had this tv with the Dish Nework for 3 months. I just upgraded to DirectTV with the Hughes High Definition receiver. The HD picture is incredible. Baseball games are like watching a video game. You can probably tell time from a fan's watch in the stands! HD reception is even better than DVD - which is superb. Regular DirectTV reception is certainly good as well, but sometimes it depends on the broadcast. I recommend watching regular cable or satellite broadcasts through s-video and HD through component video, although HD in s-video is good as well. I have everything connected through my Marantz SR7200 receiver. The bottom line, with all the features of this TV, I don't think you can get anything better.

Excellent colors, image clarity and resolution, even out of the box. Did a "consumer" level set-up using the Video Essentials DVD set-up disk that helped create an even more superb picture. Cabinet looks stylish just sitting there. Remote is very easy and brightly back-lit. I looked at many sets before purchsing. The Pioneer Elite looked really good too but way too much money. I could not get any other set to look as good as the Toshiba. Everyone who comes to look at the DVD picture is stunned by how great the picture looks. Makes me feel good that the $$ was well spent.Ö

As always, I wish the instruction manual would give more technical information rather than just quickly skimming over set-ups. I

Stunning DVD picture, especially when connected via component colorstream. I bought this set with the primary purpose of watching DVD movies so I accepted the fact that cable and VHS reception would be really bad. To my suprise, both were very good.

Great product at a great price I can't believe how much better this unit is compare to the more expensive Sony Rear Projection sets that I looked at. The colour is great; the anti-reflective screen really helps out with rooms that are not completely dark. The ability to watch this set from any angle is one of best surprises after seeing so many rear projection screens that you had to sit right in the center of the room or the picture get washed out. Hooking this TV up with component output from a Toshiba 3750 progressive scan DVD player made the picture come alive with a rock steady, great colour picture (make sure you set your DVD player up for 16:9 output or the signal get compressed for 4:3 then recompressed for 16:9 which yielded lots of artifacts).The sound is very good for a TV but is no substitute for a good Dolby 5.1 setup (I tried it for a month but then got the home theater setup). The convergence was not perfect even after doing the auto and manual convergence. I had a technician fix it in service mode and that cleared up the problem. I did not like the grey bars down the sides when watching regular cable TV so I use the theater wide 1 mode which does are great job at stretching the picture. It takes a little bit to get use to it (like looking at something with a wide angle lens) but after a while the regular 4:3 ratio looks somewhat compressed. The only problem is that any large screen TV shows you how bad regular cable is.You can use Theater 2 mode when you are watching HDTV ration programming on regular TV to cut off the black bars that you get now when watching programs like ER or Enterprise. The bottom line is that if you combine this TV with a progressive scan DVD player, you won’t want to go to the movies again.

Have been extremely satisfied with this purchase. I spent considerable time debating purchasing this set versus the sometwhat cheaper 50h81. Feel quite secure that the extra $200 dropped on this unit were worth the difference. Set is fed progressive input from panasonic rp91, and rca from Comcast digital cable. No true hi-def source yet, so I cannot comment on the sets hdtv performance. Set is in a smallish room, with a viewing distance of roughly eight feet. Originally, the set seemed to overpower the room, but it now seems ideally sized for the space. The shallow depth of this set allows it to fit where other rptv''s might not. Calibration was performed using the avia test disc, as well as the 56pt geometry calibration from the set''s service menu. Images from the cable source look "acceptable". The limited bandwidth is apparent, but again most programming is viewable. The "Theater 1" stretch mode modifies the 4:3 picture to 16:9 without any notable distortion. The set shines with the progressive dvd input. Films with great DVD transfers such as Shrek, 5th Element (superbit), and Episode I are stunning. The picture rivals that on my father in law''s Pioneer Elite Plasma display. Note that the picture did benefit markedly from the 56 point convergence, and also from disabling Scan Velocity Modulation. The set''s speaker''s are acceptable, and provide surprisingly deep bass extension. The remote is well designed and allows rapid cycling through inputs and stretch modes. There are plenty of inputs, including 2 component inputs, 2 rear panel RCA/S-video, and 1 front panel RCA/S-video. The set does lack firewire input, which may be limiting if future settop HD tuners shift to this format. The manual is acceptable, but lacks details on fine points such as dealing with pulldown conversion or proper stretch mode for display of anamorphic material. I am still unable to tell if the unit is capable of storing different settings for each input. In short, would I purchase this unit again? Resounding yes. It makes cable input watchable, makes DVD input look as good as I have seen it look, and will hopefully serve as a great HDTV set when more programming cheaper set top boxes are available.

I bought this TV after I returned a Hitachi 43uwx10b. It is a bit better in addressing my problem but still pretty bad. My problem is that I have Dish Network regular satellite broadcast both TVs through my 301 Dish receiver displayed a horrible picture, you can lower the contrast and adjust to your hearts content, bottom line for me is that non HDTV signals will never look acceptable on HDTV rear projection TVS. My experience with these two TVs which I will be returning for a direct view is that If you want a TV for DVD and HDTV only these would be great, but if you are going to spend time watching regular broadcast at all you;ll need to what it in a different room on a different tv.
