Strength:

stunning picture after pro calibration

Weakness:

I didn't get one of those apparently "steal" of a deal price

To the earlier poster: the salesman who tried to sell me the 40H80 confided in me that the H80 and X81 models are in fact identical! He said that Toshiba added some "new and improved" marketing materials, but that the tv is really the same. However, the external screen over the picture is made with less reflective glass in the new version. In short, the fabulous picture is the same. If you can get a "close-out" deal on the 40X81, take it!

I agree with electronic-engineer, Sony makes a great tube set (still, 30 yrs later) but they are terribly overrated!! The

Sets made by Panasonic, Toshiba, Proton and Mitsubishi are equally startling and less money.

I am interested in the Toshiba TWX 40 but cannot convince my local dealer to install one 'cos he says they sell so quickly!

I am interested is purchasing soon but:

No one seems to have a clear answer... what is the difference between the two models?

also how big is the screen when watching tv in 4/3 mode? it can't be bigger than a 27" TV. right?

Strength:

great picture, good remote, lots of features, doesnt take up to much space that can also be a bad thing

Weakness:

looks small compared to other big screen tv's, little on the expensive side for the size but an over all good tv

I bought this tv last christmas and was quite inpressed considering this was my first big screen tv. I bought the new sony 700 dvd player. That gives my picture amazing clairity. Without a surround system (yet still shoping) it still gives quality solid sound.

The smallest 16x9 you can buy for a reasonable price.Contrast and brightness setting difficult to set properly, extremely sensitive to light.
plays dvds flawlessly and stretches broadcast signals appropriately.
several inputs available including component and s-video.

don't buy now with the rapid inflow of technology, a better purchase a couple of years ago. still sufficient if you cannot spend more than $2K and have limited viewing space, like an apt.

Strength:

widescreen

Weakness:

no line doubler

This is NOT the new 40H80. I've owned the TW40H80 and it is not nearly the set that the new 40H80 is.

The TW40H80 has no line doubler. The 40H80 does.

Please stop mixing up these two sets.

I don't own this TV yet, but I have a question: Does anyone connect this TV to the RCA DTC100(HDTV Satalite receiver box) ? If anyone did, please tell me whether you use the HDTV output terminal from the RCA DTC100(15 pins RGB). What adapter you use to convert 15pins RGB to Toshiba ColorStream Component Video Input ?

Also, does anyone know the difference between Toshiba 40H80 and TW40X81 ?

Thanks

ANSWER to Peter below.

Lots and lots of people will buy the Sony just because Sony came up with one new idea thirty years ago - the "trinitron". What "trinitron" means is that the three phosphor dots in a pixel are aligned vertically instead of in a triangle configuration. Theory is that this will reduce geometric distortion somehow. Sony had a very expensive and successful marketing campaign that convinced people ever since. People are very lazy and don't like to think so they buy Sony TVs, Honda cars (another highly over-rated product), and vote republican. Thinking is dangerous anyway and will not be tolerated by the american public.
