Strength:

Picure quality, high resolution, aspect ratio

Weakness:

none

I was amazed when compared to other products such as Mitsubishi 16x9s. This definately has higher resolutions. I have a progressive scan DVD player which definately improves the picture quality.

Unfortunately I have to sell it because I am moving. If you are interested, check out the "Home Theater" classifieds on this site, I have it listed there for $1700.

Strength:

picture is great

Weakness:

manual could be better. I've learned a lot from egroups and news groups about some of the capabilities of this set

I have the 40H80 model and love it. The line-doubling makes most of my digital cable channels looks fabulous, as good as DVD (which also looks fabulous). I'm getting the hdtv receiver soon but I'm very, very pleased with the quality of the picture and the audio is okay. The only adjustments I've needed to make have been brightness and contrast which were set too high at the factory

Strength:

slim design make this unit small enought to fit into tight spaces. Progressive scan and HD Capabilites give such a pretty picture... When hooked to the Starchoice HD201 decoder you can see 1080i

Weakness:

When compared side by side with the toshiba
CW34XC2 you find that the picture obviously is not as crisp as a tubed tv.... nor as bright.

Stand alone you would never see any flaws in the picture its only when comparing to another such as the 34 tubed that you actually say that its a little fuzzy. Sound quality is outstanding if your not hooked up to a surround receiver..however the centre channel mode is awkard to figure out and requires a receiver with pre-outs (not good)
For the price it's a great value in a 16X9 TV

Strength:

Compact size is perfect for those smaller houses or apartments. Sleek, attractive design. Absolutely stunning picture. Aspect ratio control when fed a progressive signal. Great internal line doubler.

Weakness:

On-Screen menus are too intrusive when trying to calibrate using test patterns on the AVIA & Video Essentials dvd's. The usual video maintenance problems associated with RPTV's. That damn power indicator light!!!

I just received this TV after placing my order over 2 months ago. Let me tell you, it was worth the wait. You haven't lived until you've seen "A Bug's Life: CE" via a progressive dvd player on this TV! It is absolutely incredible. I can honestly say it's the best picture I have ever seen on any TV. I couldn't be happier. I purchased the stand to go with this TV, as I felt it sat a little too low to the ground. I also built a custom-designed support ledge to affix to the back of the TV to help support my center channel speaker. The top of this TV is just a little too narrow. My design was inspired by a fellow TW40X81 owner's own custom-built ledge (thanks Jimmy). I can't wait until the convergence grids arrive so that I can perform the 64 pt. convergence on this thing. It should make the picture even sharper, if that's possible. I have to disagree with the previous post about this TV's picture not being as good as that of a tube. When properly calibrated, the picture on this TV blows away that of any other TV on the market in this price range, tube or RP. It rivals some of the best front projection systems I've seen. You simply cannot do better than this TV without paying twice as much. My only real problem with this TV is so minor, it's hardly worth mentioning. The power indicator light on the front is so bright, it almost gives me a headache when viewing in the dark. I'm thinking of placing some window tint film, or something similar over it. That's about it folks. You won't find this TV anywhere until the end of August at the earliest. It is the most sought after TV in the land. I suggest you run right out at the end of summer and get one of these babies for yourself. You won't be disappointed!

Strength:

Color

Weakness:

Everything else.

The color on this set is remarkable. But that's about it. This set cannot be focused enough to enjoy. I tried everything. I adjusted the electronic focus.I rotated the lenses. I cleaned the mirror. I adjusted the brightness, sharpnes and contrast. It just can't be done. This TV makes me think my glasses need to be cleaned. Even DVD's with an SD-5109 look blurry. Granted the better the signal, the sharper the picture. But even with a good feed the picture is blurry. Only close-ups seem sharp. Everything else is blurry. I tried getting further away while watching to see if the softness in the picture would be less noticable, but it's not. And remember, this is a small screen. With the normal aspect ratio selected, this is a 34 inch TV. You feel like getting closer. The worst thing about this TV is that it takes about 40 minutes for the chassis to heat up enough for the colors to converge. If you want to watch a half hour of news before going to work you need to put it on a timer and have it come on 30 minutes early. Toshiba could have won big with this "apartment size" rear projection TV but blew it with the cheap lens system and lousy line doubler (or whatever is cause the problem). The color is remarkable though. Yes it will be returned. And the Sony KV-36XBR400 is out.

Strength:

Great DVD picture.

Weakness:

Poor signal will noticably reveal itself on screen.

I posted an early review of the product approximately 1 month after I bought it. As before, the picture still amazes me when playing DVD. My DirecTV signal still however noticably shows aritifacts on screen. I've been told by other Toshiba enthusiasts that the mosaic like picture I experience with DirecTV is actually compression artifacts from DirecTV itself. The situation seems to be a result of DirecTV carrying local channels across the nation, hence more compression has been used to fit all local channels in its available bandwidth. If the situation worsens, folks looking into buying this set should consider digital cable instead.

On another matter, I would appreciate anyone's advice on how to optimally tune the picture settings for the best results. Incidentally, I'm willing to sell the Toshiba stand I purchased for anyone that's interested (it turned out to be too big for my room). If interested, please email me at asarkisian@hollywoodreporter.com.

This is supposed to be for reviewing a product, not venting frustation on a mishandled set that arrives dead. Toshiba support is excellent. This, like the others, is to boost rating due to an idiots inappropriate post.

Best HDTV ready set in this size category out!Period!!!

Strength:

Great Picture with DVD's,nice remote and good lookin' cabinet. Convergence calibration a breeze.

Weakness:

Video selection menu slow. Dumb place for Reset button on remote. Needs to be placed on a stand.

Have had the set for about a week. Awesome picture with DVD's using component input. Definetly needs to be placed on a stand(for those interested, you can get the custom matching stand from consumer-direct.com for $110.00 + shipping)Well worth it, and you'll notice a difference in picture sittin' on the old couch. Have dss satellite hooked up and most channels look great, but those with poor transmission look mediocre. Contacted Toshiba and was told that the new release date for the dst-3000 set top box with built-in dss (regular and HDTV) will be released first 1/4 of 2000.(will hook up to all other types of signal devices also) Price is still not set. Kudos to Toshiba for making a small footprint HDTV rear projection set. Thanks to all of you who submitted reviews here 'cause you were my deciding factor on purchasing this set.

Strength:

Excellent picture, good size for standard living room

Weakness:

Changing TheaterWide modes awkward. Changing video input slow.

The Toshiba TW40x81 hits a previously under-served market niche of "Video Enthusiasts." The key features, for me, are: the outstanding image quality; the 16x9 aspect ratio; the 40" diagonal size; and the ability to utilize anamorphic DVDs; combined with the smaller footprint of a projection TV and the excellent price.

As a 16x9 TV, it provides that extra width needed for viewing widescreen movies yet doesn't blow the standard 4x3 TV image to a ridiculous size. This results in widescreen & "reverse letterboxed" standard images that are more in proportion than standard vs. letterboxed images on a 4x3 TV. This is a consideration if you don't want to keep moving your sofa forward and back!

I also like the relatively small (for a projection TV) size. The 40" diagonal 16x9 is a nice replacement for my 27" TV. The 4x3 image is a little larger than a 27" (roughly 31" equivalent).

The image quality is terrific; unlike any other projection TVs I have seen. The Toshiba is extremely sharp & bright. And it can take advantage of anamorphic DVDs, providing even greater quality.

The only competition in image quality, size, and proportion was the Sony WEGA or similar Panasonic. However, at three times the price, and only 36" diagonal, the choice was easy.

Technical details: I have a ReplayTV, an S-Video capable VCR, and an LD/DVD connected through a Pioneer VSX-24TX receiver (with S-Video switching). The LD/DVD is also connected directly to the component video of the TW40x81. So we don't use the TV tuner at all, and only switch the TV input when watching a DVD.

BTW, regarding placing your center speaker on top of the TV. Tried it, saw bowing and rippling of the TV screen. Take the difficulty as a hint; buy a stand for your speaker!
