Strength:

Price

Weakness:

Slow remote control, slow mode switching, and so-so looking cabinet.

I've had this one for about 6 months. I was satisfied with picture quality until yesterday. While I was watching the TV, suddenly, I heard the 'pop' noise and the picture blanked out for a second or two. Once the picture came back on, it was all blurry with jagged edges and the overall picture looked like I was looking at the screen through a screen door.

I've been trying to contact Toshiba to get the warranty service but they couldn't find any authorized service shop around my area (Topeka. KS).

Strength:

Great picture

Weakness:

Slow remote
Bad customer service

Update: I have had this television for 5 months, but have only been able to use it for 3. The first week that I had it, I had a problem with the three different guns not lining up, and the picture swimming all over the screen. Took them around 3 weeks to fix it, after waiting for 2 weeks to see a tech. Picture got great after that!!!

Now, four months into ownership, something going out is causing my screen to turn totally blue. This has been this way since before Christmas. The tech finally came out around the 13th of January. I am still waiting on it to get fixed.

When it works, I truly believe there is no better value, but right now, I know I got a lemon. even covered by the extended warranty, this is not the experience I expected from Toshiba. I called their customer service and they are looking into what they can do for me. I can tell you this. I have never had this type of problem occur with any other electronic product within the first 3 months of ownership.

I requested that they replace it. I doubt they will. If they don't, and I will post here again to let you know, I will NEVER buy another Toshiba produtct again.

Strength:

Overall picture quality, Progressive Scan inputs, lots of features, cheap price for a 56" widescreen HDTV

Weakness:

Glossy, protective screen. Slow remote. Lack of RGB input. Build quality kind of cheap.

Outstanding picture quality, especially through the progressive scan HD inputs (via my SD-5109 DVD player). A little fuzzy at the edges though. Lots of features for the price (I paid only $3200 retail at my local dealer!). The protective screen is still too glossy. And the remote is very slow (esp. when selecting video inputs). And cabinet quality is a little suspect (cheap materials) as compared to Mitsubishi's or Pioneer Elites (but they are more expensive). Also, the lack of a RGB input is not good, especially when you want to hook up a computer or HDTV set-up box with a RGB output. All-in-all, even though the unit may not stack up to the better Mitsubishi or Pioneer Elite models in terms of quality, the Toshiba is an unbeatable value for a HDTV-ready set (esp. at the price I got).

Strength:

Everything!

Weakness:

It will take up your whole bedroom!!

Short and sweet-fantastic!
ISF calibration and good component cables are must!
If your not seeing drop dropping visuals that is likely why.
Fantastic on every level.
So much depth and features it will take weeks to get it at anything near its potential.

Update to the previous submission.

Well, it has been 6 weeks since my TV set went down after the 6 month of usage. So far, they (Toshiba Customer Support Center) have not been able to find a Toshiba authorized repair shop around my area. The junk has been good for nothing but taking up my living room space.

I am extremly frustrated and upset about their inability to to anything for my broken down TV set so far. I am trying contact the Attorney General's office to report this problem because I sincerely believe that this is nothing but fraud.

Update to my Toshiba Customer Support story:

After 10 weeks, the TV was fixed on February 23rd. I had to harass Toshiba's customer support line every week to get something to happen. Now, I sent a letter requesting some sort of compensation for the troubles that they put me through ( 4 months of inactivity out of the first 6 months of ownership) and the response was "Sorry about your luck, if something else happens we will see what we can do."

I will never buy a Toshiba product again and due to their customer service issues, I would advise that you look carefully before plunking down hard earned cash on any of their products.

Strength:

AWESOME PICTURE, 16:9 THEATER WIDE FORMAT, GREAT SOUND !

Weakness:

SLOW REMOTE

By far Toshiba put together a great TV. Watching movies either thru DVD, VCR or even from regular dish channels brings you the true feeling of Theater. I got mine from onecall. Onecall people are very professional and easy to deal with.

The picture quality and SOund are comendable. I am surprised at the crystal clear sound and the bass it puts out. The Remote is slow, howver I was able to program it to handle VCR, DISH reciever very easily.

Viewing angle is much more wider than others in the same class. I compared several models including Sony, Mitsubishi, Sanyo and Panasonic and finally settled for Toshiba and very pleased with it since I had it in last 2 months.

Strength:

Picture Quality, Picture Size

Weakness:

TV is slow to switch between Modes (DVD, TV, etc.)

After a thorough search of models and sizes, I chose the Toshiba for its price and overall picture quality. I am completely thrilled with the TV. I looked at similar models from Sony (RP and Direct), Pioneer (nice but too much money) and Hitachi (61hdx98b). I bought the TV from a small dealer in Mississauga who was the only one who could get the TV. Everyone else had it on back order. I give credit to John at Next Big Thing Electronics. With the TV I also bought a Toshiba Progressive Scan DVD player (SD5109), Harmon Kardon AV receiver (AVR300) and Atlantic Technology System 170 speakers. The combination provides a fantastic audio and visual home theatre experience.

I haven't actually got the set yet. I just wanted to let you know that Onecall.com is having a blowout sale on the set. $3000+shipping. The Toshiba service plan is $200 for 3 years. I couldn't find a better deal if I wanted to. If you do get it, please tell them that porcaccio@yahoo.com referred you.
