Strength:

Low price tag and decent picture for price.

Weakness:

Insane buzzing noise, I would not be surprised if a bug landed on this unit that it would get zapped.

I bought the Gateway 46" Plasma TV and I can honestly say it has been the absolute worst consumer experience I have ever had in my time on Earth (By Far). There is not much more that I can say that already has not already been said. But I had to add my story to the growing list. I have gone thru 2 units and both sound like Bug Zappers. I am amazed that anyone can sell a television that buzzes louder than normal audio. If you have your sound cranked it will drown out the buzz but if you want to watch the news at normal sound level this unit will drive you nuts. Ultimately I am returning the unit and fortunately I did it within the 30 day money back but Gateway hits you with at 15% restocking fee. Unbelievable. But I have lived an learned and I let my excitement of getting a plasma get the better of my good judgement. However I went to check the TV out at one of their stores before buying and isn't it amazing how none of their sets there buzz. I knew the picture was not the greatest and was willing to accept that for the price tag, but the buzzing in unacceptable. Buyer beware DO NOT waste time and money buying this piece of junk.

Strength:

It's a very heavy unit and could make a wonderful boat anchor.

Weakness:

Loud buzzing noise, bad picture, very lousy tech support and many of the company functions are outsourced.

Gateway 46" plasma EDTV: Biggest piece of garbage, in my opinion, sold on this planet. Deceitful sales force that knows of the loud buzzing sound that the TV makes and the bad picture it has, but they continue to push the product, I believe knowing full well that they go out the door as lemons. They kept saying they got a bad batch, but I went through three different TVs and they got progressively worse. Tech support ignored my request for service on the first set. They said "It's allowed to make noise". Funny how the set on the showroom floor was quiet as a mouse with a good picture. I returned this set prior to the expiration of the 30 day return policy so I'm probably one of the lucky ones who did not get stuck with a lemon for good. Still I'm told I will need to wait for 10 to 14 days before I my credit card gets credited for the return. Save yourself a lot of grief and $1000 or more and go to Best Buy and purchase a Daewoo 42" plasma TV.

Strength:

The only one I could find was the fact that you can watch the TV from any angle.

Weakness:

Everything we can think about this TV is a weakness. The TV buzzes, service sucks, the salesman are commissioned liers.

We have had this piece of junk for less than a month and Gateway has replaced it twice with more junk. They service department says that we can have a TV that puts out 40 decipals, well that gives us head aches just listening to the TV. The sales man (Citrus Heights, CA) is and was typical of a sleezy salesman, anything for the sale. We also bought their new Tablet PC while we were at the local Gateway store. When the last replacement TV arrived the outsourced technician said that the 46" plasma TV was a piece of junk and the outsourced trucking company driver agreed that he had been picking up and delivery lots of defective TVs. We had to purchase the stand separately ($200)and we originally thought the noise might be from not having the additional Gateway speakers we purchased those for $280 but it didn't solve the problem. We have the TV hooked up to a Bose surround system (never had a lick of problem with this system) so having to buy another $280 worth of speakers was quite a shock. Well the TV is going back to Gateway today (03/28/04) and we're going to go over to Best Buy and get the Daewoo 42" for a lot less and the stand is included in the base price of $2249. We also had trouble hooking our Sony DVD player up to the TV, it wanted to play everything in Black & White or in some strange color.

BIGGEST PEICE OF JUNK EVER MADE, I was in search of a $3000 or less plasma for my bedroom wall. This was not the right answer. This junk had a greenish picture tint and a loud buzzing noise.I thought it was a defect ,but gateway gave me a new one and it did the same thing. They also charge a $300 RESTOCKING FEE for being a peice of crap. There was also pixels missing. DON"T WASTE YOUR MONEY.Buy a daewoo for $2699 @ bestbuy . This daewoo was far better and it operated like a plasma should.

Strength:

Did I mention that the 46" model is 46 inches on the diagonal? It has great resizing features to get the most out of your DVDs (make sure to use progressive scan). The TV comes ready for VGA, DVI, component, composite, s-video and cable. The DVI and VGA inputs are great, with PIP working in VGA and DVI modes. The remote for the 46" is nice, and supports virtually all of my other AV equipment.

Weakness:

Buzzes like a bad florescent light. Lots of garbage from NTSC up-scaling, especially in high-contrast situations. Also, rich colors (red) tend to cause straight lines to appear sort of wobbly. Sold by idiots. They really are money-grubbing jerks, so watch for bad service. I was so excited about buying that I really didn't care much. Big mistake. They let me sit around for a while, while they tried to convince an old lady that the set was "HDTV". They forgot to mention (conveniently) that I needed a truck before finishing the sale. When I had to unbox the set to stuff it in my car, they forgot to toss the remote in with the rest. Doesn't come with a stand or a mount of any kind. So expect to pay over $200 for a part of the machine that you can't live without. Better, find a good sales guy willing to make a deal. No stand, no sale. I lost the stand money because I didn't try harder to make a deal. Screen so big that you won't fit it into a normal car to get it home. We had to take the screen out of the box, risking a smashed monitor. They mentioned that they wouldn't take it back if it was damaged during the trip. The machine doesn't like my progressive scan Sony DVD player. It will play "Lord of the Rings" (SE) in progressive scan, but not "Spider Man". This is very annoying when a buddy says "let's watch Spider Man on wide-screen!" and I have to respond with "how about Lord of the Rings!" Heavy as sin. I had to reinforce the sauder-home type entertainment furniture with extra braces to hold the television properly (I purchased the stand rather than the wall-mount). Make sure to prepare your home for a houndred-pound, three-foot wide stand. PIP only works in VGA or DVI mode. You can watch your tuner in a crappy little window (or slightly bigger window), but it really isn't very useful. Instead, use a tuner card in your PC.

I purchased the 46" model. It is the biggest, most beautiful television I've ever owned. It is also one of the most expensive toys I've purchased, and I don't really think its worth the price. Wait another year or two for the price to come down. The screen buzzes slightly. If you don't turn it up or have a bit of white-noise, you'll go crazy. Bzzzzzzzzz... Make sure to plug in your own speakers. The built-in speakers are entirely miserable. The external jacks are fine for 8 and 15 ohm speakers. The screen shows a lot of white-garbage when up-scaling NTSC signals. High-contrast edges often show spotty flicks of vertical color. Either black on white or white on black can cause the problem. I hadn't noticed at first, but I found this phenomena increasingly distracting. Cartoon Network's "Adult Swim" white on black dialog is a great example of distractingly bad aliasing. Patterned reds are often textured by the screen, making lines look wavy. I notice this oddity more during the day than at night, and only with NTSC up-scaling. It has a nice remote, but it eats batteries very quickly. The back-lighting gets dim and the tv has an increasingly difficult time catching the signal.
