Strength:

The box in came in made a great fort for my son.

Weakness:

Short lived performance.Should last a bit longer for the price.

I have owned this t.v for a year and a half now.Is it unreasonable for me to think that a new t.v.should perform well this long or is it normal for it to crap out 3 months after the warranty expires? It now takes 1 hour for all the picture distortions and colour bleeding to go away before the picture actually clears up.eventually, when the picture clears,(after I have missed my favourite program) It looks pretty good. Also,a week after I purchased mine,I told a co-worker about the great picture and price,so he bought one too.A month later he noticed a green streak in the upper left corner that would not go away.He hasn't spoken to me since. My recommendation is to purchase the extended warranty at any price because i am told my picture tube needs replacing at pretty close to the cost of a new set.Nuff said.

This JVC AV-32D201 is by far the best TV I could find for this price in P.G. Just a little plug for the home service provided by Dave, manger Sight & Sound Prince George. B.C. Canada "Thanks" for the help:

Value, picture quality, inputs, sound

Weakness:

front a/v input jacks are a little loose...still work, and are hidden by the lid...not a big deal

If you want an extremely capable tv with great picture quality that will challenge the Panasonic Gaoo and Sony Wega, but at half the price...this is it. It's not quite as good a picture as the other two, and doesn't have the same sound capabilities, although sounds far better than most 32' ers. The big sell is the price. You get about 90% of the performance of a Gaoo or Wega at 60% the cost. It will blow the other 32" TV's out of the water... Very impressed with the Theater Video mode...JVC has really turned themselves around in the last 4 years.

This review is in reference to the D501, not the D201. PIP is the only main difference.

After extensive research of most major 32" brands, I weeded the hot list down to JVC, Sony, and Toshiba. In my opinion, the pictures on the JVC and Sony were best. When features and price come into play, the JVC wins hands down. I truly think that Sony makes a great TV, but they may be trying to stretch their reputation a bit by asking too high of a price.

The JVC sets up well and the multiple inputs leave room for growth. I was totally amazed at the DVD playback quality. I put in "Fifth Element" and couldn't believe the color, sharpness, and incredible sound that this TV delivered. I didn't even have my stereo on yet and I was impressed. This is definitely a must buy for those looking for a big TV. The 36" TVs just didn't do it for me as far as picture detail was concerned. The 32 inchers seemed much better. Also, the color contrast on the D501/D201 is outstanding. If you are shopping, please make an effort to see this TV perform with a DVD. You'll be glad you did. For the money, this is the best deal out there.

This is for the 2001 Model.

Overall I think this TV is great for the price. I was oribnally comparing it to the SONY Trinitron of the same size. For less money ($75 cheaper) and more options (more plug ins, unbelievable surround sound possibilities) I went with the JVC. I was a little skeptical at first but now that I have had this tv for 6 months I am very happy with my choice. If you are shopping for a TV, definately look into this one and compare it to some of the bigger names out there, I think you will be surprised also of what JVC offers.

Strength:

Picture, sound, component video inputs

Weakness:

Power LED is too bright. Picture seems to have a slight tilt which is un-noticeable to everyone except me.

Great for DVD playback. Colors are excellent. Best TV sound that I've heard - no need to use my HT components for casual viewing. Very happy with this set.......

Best price I could get was $980.00 Cdn.

Strength:

A high quality off-air tuner, very good picture quality, component video input, reasonably good sounding speakers, decent remote, very good value.

Weakness:

No rabbit ears (just joking...kind of). Lack of PAL display capability (an almost universal weakness of TVs designed for the U.S. market). Can't rewrite badly written tv scripts.

I originally posted this review under the AV-32D200 (predecessor model) section, but since the powers that be have now given this (now) new model its owm section, I am cutting and pasting my review so it is included the actual model number.

Anyway, this is my thinking on the JVC AV-32d201. In the long-term (years), I plan to get some sort of HDTV display when the price comes down and the technical issues get more completely sorted out. This set seemed to offer reasonable quality today without costing too much. Also, I'll probably buy some sort of DTV set top box in the next year or so when decent quality tuners become available for 200 bucks or so. I am guessing that at least some of the boxes will have NTSC component output, so my soon-to-be-a-doorstop AV-32d201 will at least be able to show me the last bit of resolution that can be squeezed out of the 50 year old NTSC standard before I chuck it out of the window to make room for a DTV-dedicated set.

If you buy this TV, I think it will make you as happy as almost any TV can. I still like mine, even after looking at a lot of other sets since buying it. If only I could be so lucky in choosing a mate. But that's another story.

I am giving it five stars for value because I think that it delivers 90% of the impact of some top-of-the-line 32 inch TV sets at less than 50% of the cost. In terms of overall rating, I give it four out of five stars because in picture quality it ranks in at least the top third of all the 32" TV's I've seen.

If you're thinking about choosing this TV, feel free to email me. I'll let you know whether I still like it or if turns out to be turkey. BTW, Douglas TV in Chicago sold it to me for $596, including delivery. It was a good deal, I think. If you get a better deal, good for you. Just don't let me know about it.

I bought the 32D501. The only diff from the 201 is PIP. I love this TV. The colors and pic quality is incredible. For the price, it is unbeatable.

I watched "Perfect Storm" using the anamorphic sqeeze. I swear, it was like watching it on HDTV.

I am Very happy!!

Strength:

Incredible, wonderful picture, great sound, features, seems to be high quality, well built.

Weakness:

Large, my coffee table became the TV stand! Spendy, I got a great deal on an open box model with a three year "performance contract"

Well, I guess you could say I've "been to the mountain and heard the truth" Well, that's a bit hokey, but I have comparison shopped the hell out of the TV market and learned a lot the past couple of months. At first, I just wanted a big, 36" screen. I didn't want, nor could afford to pay the money for the truly big screen projection sets, that'll be my next upgrade a few years down the road! So, After internet "research" I decided on the Panasonic SF series, but alas, too expensive. Then, I got very hot and excited about Sony Wega, but again, too expensive and although I almost got the 32" Wega, I really wanted a big picture and wanted a 36" set. So... I decided on the JVC D series 36", due mostly to salespeople recommendation and this site. However, the night I went to buy it, all the stores were out of them and I sure didn't want to wait one to three weeks! (too impatient for that!) Instead I got a 36" Panasonic, the CT 36D20. It wasn't my first choice, but it was a pretty nice set, with an okay picture. However, it had a couple little problems, and I had that nagging feeling that the JVC was a better set. So, on the 30th day, (Circuit City -- great place to do business and a 30 day return policy!) I went in and returned the Panasonic for an open box JVC 36D201, with the three year "performance service warranty" and delivery the next day. (I hope the service contract works if I ever need it, I usually don't go for those things!)

The rest of the story? I went home that night and turned on the Panasonic and said, "Damn, this has a nice picture, I hope I'm doing the right thing!" Next day, the Pana is whisked away and a JVC put in its place. Is the JVC a better set? YES, YES, AND YES! I was, frankly, amazed at how much better the picture was, because the Panasonic was really pretty good. What makes the JVC better? One word, "involving". The JVC delivers that last degree of color, sharpness and realism that makes viewing it a very involving experience, and that's when home theater becomes FUN. I'm very surprised that I do most of my watching, either DVD or cable, on the theater mode. I usually like my colors bright and vibrant, with lots of contrast, but in theater mode everything is so well balanced, color, brightness, constrast, etc., that it is very comfortable and satisfying to watch, albeit much darker than the other modes. I agree with those that say DVD is 90% as good on this set as the WEGA. The picture is very clear and detailed without the razor edged sharpness that might get tiring on WEGA. Although, don't get me wrong, I'm not slamming WEGA sets here, I do thing they're great and if my tax refund had been just a bit bigger, would probably have one now! Even the lowly VCR looks pretty darn good; Star Wars Episode One was clear and colorful on this set and fun to watch! the sound from the tv's speakers is great, very good for casual watching. Overall, after spending 2-3 months thinking way too much about tv sets, I'm very happy and pleased with this one, and plan to keep it a while! Hope it lasts a good, long time. At least until the Bush tax cut comes through, I get $1,000 bucks for each kid (instead of the measly $500 now (sic) ) and I can afford the Sony 65" HDTV! If you can find this set, get one, You'll be happy!

Strength:

Excellent quality picture, high-resolution, solid blacks and excellent fine tuning options. Simulated surround sound is cool if you don't want to turn your surround sound receiver on for normal TV Viewing. Incredible value and price for a high quality component.

Weakness:

Sound. Some here like the sound of the speakers. My 15-year old Sony had much better sound overall. Specifically, the JVC lacks bass. Mid-range and treble are good.

First of all, like many others here, I wanted the Sony Wega badly. Couldn't get past the price tag. I looked at other TV's between $750-$900 and was prejudiced against the JVC because my experience has always been that you get what you paid for. I have gone for lesser expensive items in the past and have almost always regretted it (there are exceptions, but that has been the overwhelmingly general rule). Side by side comparison finally convinced me to purchase the JVC. Plus, leading consumer review magazines rate the JVC as one of the most reliable 32+" TV's out there.
Compared to Toshiba, Panasonic, and Phillips-Magnavox, the JVC has much better color reproduction and truer blacks. I feel that it compares favorably to Sony. Default colors will not work. You will need to fine tune them. Greens are too artificial looking and reds seem to float off the screen. After fine-tuning a bit the colors are dead on. Excellent component or composite video playback. My VCR and DVD look incredible on this TV.
Some have also complained about the glare on this TV as a weakness. I respectfully disagree. If you compare apples to apples (curved screen to curved screen) then the glare on this TV is no more noticeable than on other curved screens. If you try to compare this curved TV to a flat TV such as the Sony Wega, then there is definitely a difference but you are also comparing the JVC to a TV that is twice as expensive.
Overall, you CANNOT beat the value for the price. This is a high quality, high-resolution TV for an incredibly reasonable price. I would rate this a 6 or 7 for Value Rating but 5 is the highest that they allow. I gave it Overall Rating of 5 because the lack of bass is not a killer, especially in this price range.
