Strength:

Great sound and picture!

Weakness:

Remote could be a little easier to operate.

I was looking for a new 36" TV to replace my 27" Toshiba brand that I had for years, and was turning colors meaning I need a new TV set. Doing what most people do going to the stores to find someone to try to help you find the right TV, at a good price. I was looking for a good TV that was ready for the future but did not want to shell out a lot of money, and those new flat Sony's caught my eye until I saw the price! Every where I went it was mostly men working the sales floor, and hardly a women around to help a women in need. I got from salespeople is that every TV did not ad up to the Sony flat screens. I told every salesperson that I was not interested in the Sony price, and I ended up walking away from Circuit City, Best Buy, Good Guys, and Frys!

A friend of mine said go to the Video Only for good price's, and customer service, so I took his advice and went to the Video Only in San Francisco where I live. I never heard of this place before it was a small shop on Van Ness across from Circuit City. I spoke to a salesman there and he did not try to push the flat Sony's down my throat, but instead he was more pushy then all the other places I went to shop first. He was trying to sell me what he called the Toshiba Cinema Series, which pretty much was in the same price range as the flat Sony's. I was thinking at the time, that It must be because I'm a woman, and all these electronics stores was dominated by men who think women don't know how to shop for electronics. I tried to get this salesman at Video Only to work with me, I told him basically what I was looking for, and it went into one ear and out the other. He then pulled a Xerox copy of a one page article from Consumer Reports magazine saying that Toshiba is the top rated TV, then he pointed again to that expensive Cinema Series. I said okay your not hearing me and I'm gone, he said good luck on finding a better deal because we are the best deal in town. I walked out of their like I just got mugged I will never go to Video Only again!

I then turned to the internet and found a bunch of site's selling with all different price points. I was calling many site's, and getting a lot less help from people on the net selling TV's then I did from the retail stores. I did however came across goodguys.com and spoke to a salesman named Keith. I first asked Keith, what is a good price for a 36” TV, and what was your opinion of a good brand? He gave me a short but good variety Sony, JVC, Toshiba, and Panasonic. He then asked me why was I looking for in a new TV? I was shocked to hear a salesperson ask me a question about why I was shopping in the first place, and he also asked what do you want from your new TV from now, and in the near future? It was then that I could relax, and let him know what price range, features, and so on. He recommended the JVC AV-36D201 I did not want PIP, this did not have that, I did want all the latest hookups and this TV did have that, and I wanted a reasonable good price, and JVC fit the bill. It has a longer labor warranty then most brands he told me, and the repair history is not bad when it comes to JVC TV's. I decided to buy the JVC set from Keith, at $799.94 free shipping, and no sales tax which was a very nice additive for me to making a buying decision. Keith let me know the return and exchange policy before we got off the phone which was nice of him to tell me. I received my TV within the time frame Keith told me it would show up. I must say that this TV is more than I expected to get I never had a JVC before, now I'm glad I have one today thanks to keith at goodguys.com.

Strength:

Beautiful picture. Vivid colors. Bargain-basement price!!!

Weakness:

None, yet.

I purchased the JVC 32D201 to replace a 10-yr old Pioneer big-screen that finally died. I had no idea what I was missing from my DVDs and DSS!!! The JVC's video is pure heaven. The colors are vivid and the contrast is wonderful. Detail leaps from the screen. I used Video Essentials (DVD) to calibrate the video, and I was surprised by how little I had to tweak the factory settings to achieve a wonderful picture. I especially liked getting a component video input for this low of a price. This is by far the best performing and best looking TV that can be had for under $600. In fact, this TV is a serious contender against other brands "silver-boxed" TVs which cost twice as much! Get one and be happy. Great product, JVC.

Review for AV-36D201: Component inputs

Weakness:

Review for AV-36D201: "MAJOR" geometry problems. Picture slanted/tilted off 1", Pincushioning on side with sideway trapozoidal effect. Picture information is cut off, so tube doesn't diplay all of picture. Example: channel numbers, on-screen menu icons, text, etc. This is rougly about 1 1/2" on one side and 1/2" on the other side.

These problems have been on "2" different sets. First one exchanged, second one shows effects even worse.

Review for AV-36D201:

I can't recommend this set as it's plagued with major geometry problems. These problems were apparent on 2 different, isolated televisions. CC seen the problem and stated it is definitely defective. These problems were "VERY" apparent and puzzling.

Also, component input has an inherent brightness boost on the connection. Since on this JVC model, it only offers "1" custom memory setting that is used for the other inputs, you need to adjust settings "everytime" you plan on using component inputs. If adjustments are out of the question, you could deal with the higher brightness picture, which looks much worse than the S-video input. I'm dreadfully disappointed by this television.

While others obviously haven't had the same problems as I've encounter with these 2 sets, it leads me to believe that "VERY POOR" quality control is the cause. I guess if you can find a set that works properly, it should have a good picture. The questionable quality control on these sets makes selecting a good set more of a game. I don't like to play games with my money and time. Goodbye JVC.

Buy at your own risk.

Strength:

Great picture quality, component video inputs, extra set of front inputs, responsive remote.

Weakness:

Sound is good, but not as brilliant as the picture. Layout of the remote could be better.

This is a terrific television, particularly for DVDs through the component video input. The first one shipped was defective and had to be returned. Goodguys.com matched the best price I could find from an authorized e-tailer (onecall.com) and charged no shipping or sales tax.

Strength:

Great Picture, Great Sound, Great Price, SVHS and Component Input, Front AV ports for easy video game system switching.

Weakness:

Hyper Sound is annoying, but you can turn it off. BBE sound is great.

I love this TV. I shopped around and I got a Magnavox 32" first. The Magnavox had an irritating high pitch electronic whine. Best Buy did not want to look at it or exchange it because they said they was nothing wrong with it, apparently I have hypersensitive ears. So I got a refund. Anyway I ended up buying the JVC after reading other reviews on this site.

The first thing I noticed was how clear all the pictures were that were kinda fuzzy from the Magnavox. Then I decided to play a DVD and I was floored. The sound is awesome, the color was perfect, all my friends agree, this is the 32" TV to have.

Great for PSX2 games too. :)

Strength:

Picture tube is reasonably close to flat for a 32". Nice S-video and component inputs. Nice front input for video camera or video games.

Weakness:

It might be too sharp for NTSC? Otherwise no weaknesses except when fine tuning colour you have to keep going back into the menu if you wait too long after adjusting something and looking at your results.

I spent my life watching TV at home on a 20" RCA television. From close up it looks fine. From the couch, its not too bad either.

I have a Pioneer 303S DVD drive in my PC, along with a Matrox G400max video card. This allows me to watch DVD output on TV's. My PC monitor is a VERY VERY SHARP 19" (18" viewable) monitor, but was 2" smaller than even the 20" TV, so when I bought a TV, I wanted bigger than 20". After shopping and talking to salespeople and reading reviews, I bought the JVC 32D201.

I have a problem in that I am not used to larger TV's. When watching DVD's from my S-video out, I see the scan lines because the empty space between the scan lines is visible and I find it distracting. It is less noticable when watching VHS tapes. I wonder if the sharpness of this TV makes the lines more visible. I wonder if I should swap down to the 27" for now using NTSC stuff. I cannot afford an HDTV with progressive scan and line doubling/quadrupling or whatever. I am cursed with always noticing the fine details. If I had to live it, I would, but being my first TV purchase, I wanted more from it. I wonder if other 32" TV's are like this?

Otherwise, when you sit far enough away, the scan lines aren't too bad. Ignoring the scan lines, I have to say the TV is very very good. Not much noise or other interference except sometimes there are a group of horizontal bars or lines faintly visible on the screen, kinda like a hash mark image. Its not always visible though.

A good TV. If you are shopping for a 32" TV. Definitely take a look at this one whencomparing. If you are as picky as me though, and used to smaller TV's and PC monitors, be prepared to see the NTSC scan lines.

Strength:

Great picture. Lots of inputs/outputs.

Weakness:

Cheesy-looking remote

Absolutely the best model in it's price range. The sony in the same price range lacked component inputs...why? Who knows. Also liked the speaker set up better than the Sony Trinitron. (on each side of the screen rather than under the screen...not sure the term for this). Why pay the same ,or more, for a name while sacrificing features?

Love the softness off the "Theatre Mode". I am using a Hitachi DV-P705 dvd player and the picture the JVC diplays still blows me away. Get this set!
