You can disregard Ramesh's review below. He says that his television only has one antenna input and is the cheapest 16:9 set around, yet the CT-34WDM60 has no antenna inputs because it does not have a tuner and this is certainly one of the more expensive direct view sets around, retailing originally for $6000. He has obviously confused his set for the 34WDM60 and has ruined the average rating for what is the finest 16:9 direct view set out there along with the newer 34WX50. To anyone wishing to buy either of these sets, please read Gary Merson's review of both these televisions at www.widescreenreview.com. No 16:9 direct view sets look better than these. Also, Ramesh, there will be black bars on the top and bottom of many films displayed on a 16:9 set because they have an aspect ratio of 2.35:1, which is wider and shorter from top to bottom than the approximately 1.85:1 aspect ratio of a 16:9 screen. |

INCREDIBLE PICTURE, 4 COPONENT & 4 S VIDEO INPUTS
Weakness:
NONE FIRST OF ALL I AM WONDERING WHO THIS RAMESH IS. THE TAU CT-WDM60 IS A MONITOR AND HAS NO TUNER OR ANTENNA INPUTS. RAMESH IS NOT EVEN DESCRIBING THE CORRECT MODEL HDTV. EITHER HE IS A SONY SALESMAN OR DOES NOT KNOW WHAT TV HE OWNS. I AM A LIFE LONG AUDIOPHILE AND VIDEOPHILE AND THE CT-WDM60 IS POSSIBLY THE BEST CONSUMER DIRECT VIEW HDTV AVAILABLE. THE M60 HAS BEEN REPLACED WITH THE X5O, WHICH IS THE SAME TUBE AND CHASIS, WITH THE ADDITION OF A TUNER AND LESS INPUTS. I WAS ABLE TO PURCHASE MINE FOR 2500 WHEN IT WAS THE LAST IN STOCK AT A LOCAL RETAILER A FRIEND OF MINE MANAGES. THIS SET LISTED FOR 55OO. AFTER READING BOTH THE M60 AND X50 REVIEWS AT THIS SITE I FEEL MANY OF THE REVIEWERS NEED A LITTLE EDUCATION ON TV ADJUSTMENT. ANYONE SERIOUS ABOUT OPTIMUM PERFORMANCE OF ANY SET NEEDS TO HAVE A ISF CALIBRATION DONE AFTER ABOUT 250 HRS OF BREAK IN. THE ISF CALIBRATION INCLUDES GRAY SCALE, GEOMETRY, COLOR TEMPERATURE, COLOR DECODER CORRECTION, CONVERGENCE AND OVERSCAN. I HAVE HAD THIS CALIBRATION PERFORMED ON THREE SETS THAT I HAVE OWNED AND THE RESULTS ARE INCREDIBLE. ONE OF THE REASONS THAT I PURCHASED THE CT-WMD60 WAS ON THE RECOMENDATION OF THE TECHNICIAN WHO DID ALL MY CALIBRATIONS. THE COMPANY THE TECHNICIAN WORKS FOR DOES ONLY VIDEO CALIBRATION AND ROOM/SPEAKER CORRECTIONS AND HAVE NO VESTED INTERESTS AND PARTICULAR MANUFACTURERS PRODUCTS. THE TECHNICIAN HIMSELF OWNS A CT-WMD60. THE CALIBRATION OF MY SET REVEALED THAT IT WAS CAPABLE OF NEARLY 6500 K COLOR TEMPERATURE, FALLING SHORT BY ONLY 18 DEGREES. SOME EXTREMELY EXPENSIVE PROJECTION TV'S CANNOT ACHIEVE THIS. GEOMETRY NEARLY PERFECT OUT OF THE BOX. OVERSCAN SLIGHTLY LOW AND TO THE RIGHT. ONE OF THE ISSUES I CAN VALIDATE IS THE TENDENCY TOWARDS REDNESS IN THE PICTURE. THIS IS CALLED "RED PUSH" AND IS COMMON IN ALL CONSUMERS SETS. IT COMES FROM THE FACTORY CALIBRATIONS USED TO APPEASE THE TASTES OF MOST CONSUMERS. IF ONE WENT INTO A LARGE STORE WITH MANY TV'S OPERATING AND POLLED EVERYONE THERE WHICH SET HAD THE BEST PICTURE THE FOLLOWING SENARIO WOULD BE COMMON. THE PEOPLE VIEWED ON THAT SET WOULD APPEAR TANNED AND COLORS VERY WARM. THAT TYPE OF PICTURE IS NOT A ACCURATE PICTURE BUT APPEALS TO MOST UNEDUCATED VIEWERS. THE CT-WDM60 OUT OF THE BOX HAS THE COLOR DECODER SET TO SATURATE RED AND THE GRAYSCALE IS SET SLIGHTLY RED. AFTER CALIBRATION THIS SET HAS INCREDIBLE COLOR ACCURACY. I HAVE THE RCA DTC-100 HD SAT RECIEVER AND WATCHING THE HBO HDTV DEMO LOOP ON CHANNEL 199 IS MIND BOGGLING THE CLARITY IS AKIN TO 35MM PROFESSIONAL STILL SHOOTS. Cheapest 16:9 hdtv
Weakness:
very poor brightness, poor NTSC picture, noisy line doubler Ever wonder why sometimes the sales people dont want you meddling with controls? or have a "dont touch" sign on the product? Well, next time you see that, walk away. I made the mistake of buying this HDTV without checking reviews much or playing with it. Maybe just my set has the problem, but brightness on my set is sorely lacking, and no matter how I adjust controls, just cant seem to get the picture to look as well as it did at showroom or even be comparable to an ordinary old sony trinitron I have. I have to have brightness control as high as it can go, and color, sharpnes adjustment down low to get a watchable picture. |
