Strength:

Bought the set in Jan. 1999 for around $600. Rated highly by Consumer Reports for good picture quality and sound. Has been a good set until a couple weeks ago when the set stopped working in the middle of a show. Contacted Philips for tech advice. Was told without the extended warranty I would have to pay $295 for repairs through the Philips service center. Instead contacted a local repair service who has advised me that the chassis (D 7) has had a host of service announcements and repair alerts. My set could not be repaired without a return to the factory service center. So...should I spend $300 for repair to a $600 set that is less than three years old. Should I have to pay for an extended warranty (product insurance, the consumer should pay extra money to manufacturers and dealers to cover the cost of expensive poorly made products...what a concept) so that a poorly built and designed product can be repaired? How does an individual find out if indeed other consumers have been ripped off by a poorly made and designed product?
The TP3281C1 TV has had a list of service announcements indicating problems and requires a "Flyback Modification" or other shorts in the system may develop.

Weakness:

See "strengths" This is a poorly designed product with a series of service problems. Very expensive to repair and due to manufacturing problems may only be repairable through factory service.

This product has a poorly designed chassis that has had extensive service problems. To repair the set costs $295 and may not address future service issues.

Set tested TP3284C 32"
good feature for price

Weakness:

Very bad picture Quality on dark scenes

I have been really disapointed by this set (Philips Magnavox TP3284C)

I bought the set form Circuit City, and notice that when the screen was dark (during dark scenes) the left side of the screen displayed vertical bands lighter and darker.

It was especially noticed when displaying a DVD, via the S-Video Input, or a tape via the Video-2 input.

The set has been exchanged for the same model, and again it showed the very same problem.

I've ended up exchanging the set again, and picked up a JVC 32020, that is far better.

Note that the Circuit City store has been very fair during this all process.

Sound Quality and customer service

This has been the absolute worst electronics product I
have ever bought in my life. Bought at Circuit City and
was assured they have few defect reports on this TV.
Four months after purchase the speakers were so distorted
and sound quality so poor - they have to be completely
replaced - at my expense for the labor.
The real complaint - Phillips Magnavox so called customer service. They refused to let anyone other than a telerep speak to me about it - who recited the after 90 days speech to me - over and over.
Circuit City was also too busy pointing their finger at
Phillips to be of any real help.

Verdict- stay away from Philips Magnavox.
