Strength:

Can''t find any

Weakness:

Picture Tube keeps blowing out every 4 years faithfully. That''s the only thing we can rely on!

This is the most frustrating TV my husband and I have ever purchased. In 1994 we bought an RCA Colortrak 27" TV. So far we have replaced 1 picture tube (1998) and the TV is ready for another(2002). I have a JVC TV that is 18 years old and never gve me 1 problem! This RCa is a money pit!

Strength:

Great Picture, S-video Input

Weakness:

Contant buzz and/or high pitch noise, guide plus would be great if it worked but mine always says no listing, has correct channel listings but no other info???

Well i bought this TV becuz i currently have a Proscan ps32600 in my family room and absoltely love it(proscan is Thompson consumers high end stuff) I have it hooked up in my bedroom to cable and DirecTv and of course the picture is awesome(of course only can tell how good the picture is thru the satellite, cable does no justice to any TV) The sound is pretty ? but for $399 i guess it's good enough. Overall this TV has been great for my bedroom use. I am gonna get the buzzing checked though(you can deal with it, not that big of deal) becuz i read another review about a proscan TV doing the same thing and Thompson fixed it under warranty.

Strength:

High resolution, nice remote (although it doesn't have codes for my DVD player), value

Weakness:

Component video input would have been nice

Used with:
Denon AVR-1800 receiver
Toshiba SD-2109 DVD player
RCA VR-327 VCR (yeah, it's mono, but with the DVD player I only use the VCR to tape the X-Files anyway)
Eosone RSF-400 speakers
Monster for all cabling

I've had this TV for about 3 weeks now. Replaced an old 19" Samsung. Building a HT and HAD to have something better. So far I've found the picture quality to be outstanding. Sound quality is also quite good, although I generally play the sound through the Denon. I plan to have this television for a good while, at least until digital TVs are affordable to the average man. Overall, a very good entry-level HT television.

Strength:

GuidePlus+,S-Video connection, excellent stereo separation, colour temperature settings (cool, warm)

Weakness:

GuidePlus+ channels aren't sorted by channel # or channel, name. Number of GuidePlus+ channels to view, no component video connector.

I bought this Tv because:

1) My current Tv was getting outdated. It had only one RF connection -- it would be a pain to constantly switch cables between VCR and DVD -- I have no AV receiver (yet). The Sears (actually manufactured by Hitachi) didn't have many of the advances of Tvs since 1976 (FST picture tube, built-in cable tuner, MTS stereo decoder, ColorTrak technology).

2) I wanted to create a home theatre experience. This required a larger tube like the RCA F27665, which measures 27" diagonally, large enough for my current 10x20 room.

3) Wanted higher resolution that can display DVD video in all its glory (480 lines); the 665 is capable of reproducing 680 lines interlaced. S-Video input was a MUST. Now that digital tv is here I wanted something that would be able to downconvert MPEG2 video to something that would still give me a better picture than the old Sears model.

Before buying the F27665 I went to the Active Buyer's Guide website (http://www.activebuyersguide.com/) and answered a few questions re: my needs in a tv. The RCA F27665 kept coming up repeatedly in the list.

The fleshtone reproduction is accurate as with all RCAs. In addition to 3 factory settings for picture quality -- Bright Lighting, Normal Lighting, and Soft Lighting. I like the Personal Picture Preset so I can set up the black level and sharpness and have the 665 remember that setting. Colour warmth is selectable among 3 choices -- Normal, Cool (favours blue), Warm (favours red). Warm setting corresponds to 6500 K NTSC setting (true white light).

In the sound department I was blown away at how good the stereo decoder was able to reproduce stereo effect, even via over-the-air reception. This is as compared to a JVC 27980 model that I've heard whose soundstage is more akin to mono. There's an Expanded Stereo setting which gives a 3D feel to the sound, and a Sound Logic Stereo mode which equalizes the sound on all channels so that you won't be bothered by the usual increase in volume that take place between the program and commercials. One thing though, the stereo separation seems to suffer in Sound Logic mode.

PIP is almost a standard feature on all newer Tvs, including the 665, but I would have prefered a component video input for a DVD Player or digital cable box, as PIP is not really an important feature to me.

Overall I'm very happy with the RCA F27665. I would recommend it to anyone as a replacement Tv or for an entry-level home theatre system. I see the life of this Tv to be ~10 years. At that time I hope prices of widescreen HDTV sets come down to a more reasonable $500 (CDN$). I paid $549 (CDN$) for the RCA at Sears.

Strength:

Guide Plus, PIP, Small triangular foot print, several audio modes, great picture.

Weakness:

Internal speakers are so-so. Unit is a wee bit unstable, it tends to tip with a fair size push, not a problem uless your moving it on a stand. Mine landed on the carpet face down from a 3 ft drop, however it survived perfectly well. PIP is a pain in the butt to use...

Great TV. Great picture, great sound as long as you play thru external amp/speakers. There quite a few configurations to be made to sound, video, channels.

Guide plus is a *great* feature. The Guide+ can program the TV to watch/change channels at preset times and can control your VCR to tape as well.

One minor point was that my RCA VCR which I bought at the same time is controlled by the LED on a wire. I'd think RCA would have a dedicated jack to jack connection for it's own VCR. The stick on LED is ugly and klunky.

I have found the PIP to be a little frustrating to use. You have to use an outside video source and if you're not careful you can easily end up with one source on both pictures.

My old Zenith had a 10 watt internal amp and would drive external speakers perfectly well by itself, but the salesman said that was a feature long deleted since it slowed the sales of AV Recievers, but the RCA does sound great thru my Audio system.

I've had the RCA for over 6 months, and am quite happy with it. I paid $399 for it at HH Gregg.

Strength:

Price I paid
picture quality
sound quality
remote is very organized

Weakness:

no instruction manual

I recently bought this tv at a pawn shop and I couldn't pass up the deal. 250 no tax. For a 27 inch tv with a/v jacks and s-video the deal can't be beat. When I got home I looked it up at the rca website and saw how good of a deal I got. 250 for a 680 line of resolution and the sound system rocks. For a bedroom tv you can't go wrong. Before I bought an rca dvd player at a different pawn shop for 85 dollars without a remote. With this tv I get a remote that will control both and perform beautifully with DVD VCR and cable. I am very pleased!

Weakness:

no auto blue screen

Although the screen of this model isn't flat enough, it's good enough for $279 + tax (shopped at Fry's) with its various features!

Strength:

Excellent Features, PIP, Variable/Fixed Audio Output, Universal Remote, High Resolution, Color temperature, S-Video

Weakness:

Case wraps around the screen to make it look rounder than it really is, Cheap plasticky back case, Bulky remote

I have been using this TV for one week only and am impressed with the performance. I am on the other hand unhappy with the styling of the casing.

The case wraps aound the the tube and makes the TV look rounder than it really is. I compared it with the Panasonic CT-27G5's tube, which is the same, but the flat case makes the whole appearance flatter.

On the positive side, the set's menu is quite extensive:
-Sound: mono, stereo, expanded stereo, level equalizer
variable/fixed sound output.
-Picture: color temp.
-Screen: CC for both main and PIP picture
-Channel: channel labelling, auto channel search for inputs

One of the strongest feature of the set is a S-Video input. This coupled with the 680-line res., and digital comb filter, produce a very decent picture.

On the whole, it is a good buy, but only if you find it at at least $50 cheaper than I did.

Strength:

Great picture. Great sound. Great features. Small footprint (it's actually smaller than the 26" Toshiba I replaced). The most "bang for the buck".

For $300, I figured it was worth waiting another six months to a year before getting a HDTV. There isn't enough HD programming to justify getting one yet. When the time comes, the 27" RCA will make a welcome replacement to my 20" Toshiba in the bedroom. The same HDTV that I would have bought today will cost less and have more/better features.

The RCA offered a lot of features for the money (PIP, GuidePlus GOLD, 670 lines of resolution...). The picture is great. The sound is actually pretty good for a TV at this price, and playing it through a stereo using a HIFI VCR, it sounds as good as any TV. The GuidePlus is really great. Now when I surf during commercials, I can at least see the program listings on the other channels. I was also very surprised at how nice the on screen menu setup was.
