ctc 169 chassis......need I say more!? I bought the unit 'dead' for 75 bucks, fixed the standby supply and the de-gauss ckt and all was well for 3 months, then the fun started..... CTC169BG2 translated into English means JUNK, this has to be the worst chassis RCA ever stuck in a box! Little things like a color glitch go un-noticed, thinking it is a transmission problem, then a random reset, OK...maybe some random IR tripped it. Then when powering up, click, click-click,ka-ka-ka-click, then on... Hmmmmm...time to open it up again... Fix standby supply(again), fix de-gauss(again), fix a flyback supply, fix XRP, fix 3 bad tuner grounds(good advice from another tech), AND...replace the EPROM (warranty detector), OK...back in biz...45 days later....POOF.. I have 8 hrs and about 30 bucks worth of parts in it now on top of the 75, I found a re-man chassis for 175, but haven't decided yet. I know I'm tired of fixing this one. Maybe I can paint it yellow and put it outside for the dogs. The moral of the story is: Unless you have good tech skills and plenty of time (or lots of cash for someone else) buy a Sony, 'cuz this hog will be a constant source of discomfort. Every time I look at this thing, I come up with another not-so-nice acronym for RCA...... |

Girth, Power Supply After reading another review, I was suprised to hear someone not happy w/this set, although the reader bought it broken, most likely a victim of lightning, etc. I've had this set for almost 10 years, and love the picture quality, color. I also own a Mitsubishi 35", which pales in comparison to the RCA, and cost almost double. I guess when they made these in Bloomington, IN, or BM (before Mexico), they did it better. After 4 1/2 years, and still under an extended warranty, the power supply went out, and was repaired. Last week, it went again, and I'm looking at around $250 to repair it. I used to work on TV's in the 60's & 70's, but leave it up to the TV pro's now. I hope I get another 6 years from repaired supply, as the CRT is as crisp as the day I bought it. Maybe I'm one of the lucky few, but I still like the RCA's. Similar Products Used: Mitsubishi 35" |
