Strength:

Features for the price

Weakness:

No PIP (does anyone really use this?)

For the price, you can't beat the features and picture quality. This TV includes a very flat, black screen, comb filter, S-Video input, and a nice universal remote. As a bonus, you get an extra inch of picture on either side of the screen which most TVs don't display. This brings the aspect ratio at least a tad closer to that of movies.

Strength:

Price, extra inch over standard 27" viewing area, accurate color decoder, flatter than normal screen, S-video input.

Weakness:

Supplied remote will not control VCR with codes in instruction manual

Purchased this set to replace a Sharp 27" I'd purchased in March of this year. Paid $299 for the Samsung at BJ's Wholesale Club, only $20 more than I'd paid for the Sharp nine months ago. For the extra $20, here are the improvements the Samsung offered over the Sharp:

S-Video input (number one reason for replacing the composite-input only Sharp).

28" screen in Samsung vs. 27" screen in Sharp.

Noticeably flatter screen in Samsung (unadvertised bonus, evidently :)).

Apparently a very accurate color decoder in Samsung (after setting controls by eye, awaiting calibration via Video Essentials).

Four picture presets in Samsung vs. none in Sharp

"Universal" remote control in Samsung vs. TV only in Sharp (Samsung remote won't control my new PV-9451 Panasonic VCR though, so this is irrelevant and a bit disappointing)

Overall, and excellent value, worthy of 5 stars, minus 1 star due to the issue with the remote.

Strength:

Price, flatter than average screen, S-video input.

Weakness:

Not an enthusiasts set (due to lack of user's control over settings), remote wil not control VCR.

This review is to ammend my earlier post, which I made the mistake of making a few scant hours after purchasing the unit ;). Over the next two weeks, I became disenchanted by the color decoder on the set, as there was an evident red push. Finally hooking up a DVD player and calibrating it via Video Essentials revealed the existence of a red push, and the decoder could not be brought into spec. Also, the sharpness, even when set on "0," still noticeably introduces "jaggies" into the line- perhaps indefeatable SVM? Anyhow, I am disappointed with the set as a result, and will give it a 2 to make an average 3, which I feel it deserves. Good features for the price, a nice bedroom set, but it's inaccurate decoder and too sharp picture do not make it desirable for an enthusiast's primary set.
