Strength:
Fabulous picture quality. Above average sound quality for a TV. Plenty of hook ups
Weakness:
buttons and functions of the remote are not user friendly. You can't hang this set on the wall but if it's a great picture you are looking for this is your set. In my opinion this TV is an excellent value because it has as good if not better picture display than LCD or plasma costing many times more. With that being said, I do not have the knowledge to critique video but I compared this TV to several others. I began looking at an inexpensive Advent 27" and moved on because I wanted the 16:9 widescreen display. Price took a huge jump as I had to go to Phillips and Samsung. I wondered into Ultimate to pick up the Samsung because they were the only ones that had it in stock and as I did the salesman happened to point out the Sony. The picture was noticeably better than anything I've seen. I knew that was my TV. I even had to drive to one of their other stores just to get one. This unit has the upscaling feature for upconverting NTSC signals to 720p. I don't know if that is what is being displayed but I can tell you this Sony shows VHS better than I have ever seen it. I use the HDMI for DVD playback and it looks fabulous. I prefer a bright picture and view with the TV set to the "vivid" mode. The 955 also offers other factory settings. This TV illuminates the picture better than any other I've seen. It's like it makes the picture bright yet the integrity of the detail and color is not effected. Those who would use the TV's internal speakers will be thrilled with the sound quality. This unit has plenty of power and bass, keep in mind it's a TV we are talking about. Sony also provides plenty of A/V inputs and outputs, even a cable card slot, fixed or variable audio output. The only complaint I have is with the remote, the buttons could be more logically laid out. For instance, the volume and channel are at the bottom but the mute is at the top with the power button. You shouldn't have to use 2 hands to mute your TV. And no direct access to the video inputs. One button takes you through them all until you land on the one you want and if you get in a hurry and pass it up, you go through them all again. Of course, Sony provides several selections to alter the picture ratio from 4:3 to 16:9. I don't remember the names of the selections but the one that stretches the center makes it obvious the picture has been altered. Faces take on an oblong look. The other selections leave the change in ratio undetectable to me. Even though this was one of the most expensive out of the other TV's considered I am very happy with this TV and I feel I got my money's worth. Similar Products Used: JVC, Toshiba, Phillips, Pioneer |
