Strength:

Very sharp picture, nice cabinet

Weakness:

none

This really is an excellent Tv, especially if HD is not needed. The picutre is probably the best I have seen from a 27". It is definitly sharp and focused as others have said and I really like the color depth. I actually got this TV for free from http://www.FreeFlatScreens.com/?r=11290848 It was actually pretty easy to get, just follow the directions on the site. All I had to do was sign up for a free trial offer. Anyway, I think this TV is the best choice for non high definition TV in this size.

Strength:

At 27" tube, picture is so focused and clear that it seems to come close to HD.

Weakness:

No major ones, a few annoyances.

Update to my last review of last year: My WEGA had a high pitched squealing or whistling sound intermittently. I was very annoying. The fix: loosen the rear screws, especially around the output jacks. Apparently if they are too tight, something gets squished and makes the squeal. Amazing.

Strength:

16:9 enhanced mode, upgraded sound system from previous model. Tuner moves quickly between channels.

Weakness:

Magenta Halo defect in the picture. Small issue with color purity. Sony's lack of response on the Magenta Halo issue. While I hate to purchase name-brand items, Sony video products are usually worth it. Unfortunately they are unwilling to remedy this particular problem. Oh, labeling on the remote buttons is hard to read. The light lettering on white keys is difficut to see in good light.

Especially good for DVD viewing in the Enhanced mode. Sharpness and clarity are excellent - overall great picture by comparison to all competitors in the flat screen field. The only downside to this and related models is this Magenta Halo problem (pink bands along the sides of the picture, especially evident in B&W scenes). Sony released a 'white paper' on this and the suggested remedy was to defocus the picture slightly. Well, why buy a TV for its clarity when you must lose it to correct a problem. I was told by the technician that this is a problem with the short yoke these systems employ. It is simply too hard to bend all the beams appropriately and this banding/halo is the visible evidence of this. His remark was that this would not be covered as a warranty issue by Sony. Time has proved his comment.

Strength:

Geometry. 16x9 mode awesome! Picture quality wonderfull.

Weakness:

Many little quirks. Red push is on, BLECH!. Pink bars.Sscanning velocity modulation is sub par. Scan lines noticeable.

Well, originally I purchased a Toshiba 27A41. Unfortunately that died on me after 1 month. So I exchanged it for my Sony KV27FS13. And boy am I glad I did. I haven't noticed any geometry problems on my tv like other reviewers mentioned. All in all, the geometry is fantastic. Picture clarity is amazing. And after watching DVDs on the 16x9 enhanced mode, I can't watch them on other tvs. (PLEASE remember to set your dvd player on 16x9 mode too!) The sound is adequate, although I am more of a videophile than an audiophile. The tv does have its share of problems; however, many of them can be remedied by accessing the service menu. See chuckster's site for the fixes (http://www.geocities.com/chuckster042000/Articles.html). This is a MUST! They make the tv oh so much better. Thanks chuck! ;) Problems? The tv has the faint pink bars on the left and right side of the screen that I cant seem to get rid of. Also, the scanlines are more noticable on the Sony, probably due to the better focus of the picture tube as some have mentioned. The scanning velocity modulation is alright, but I only use the low setting occasionally while playing PS2. For everything else, turn it OFF! Also, as some others have mentioned, the 16x9 mode defaultly oversqueezes the picture. Fix this with service menu. Sony also defaults to Wega series televisions to have to Red Push ON. This may be why you can't seem to get the color to your liking. Thankfully, this is again remedied in the service menu. After fixing all of these little quibbles(other than those pesky pink bars) I am happy to say that I'm thrilled with the tv. With the 16x9 mode on, the quality is near high-def. My amazing price can be attributed to an employee discount and open box at best buy. :)

Strength:

Soft button remote - many remotes leave an imprint on your thumb after you have to press the buttons so hard, while some do "work in" after use. The Sony''s buttons were soft from the first touch. I know - it''s a little thing, but very noticeable. ABSOLUTELY LOVE the power/channel buttons on the TOP of the TV (versus the typical bottom/front location). My 1 1/2 year old son can no longer PLAY with them and turn the TV off at that crucial moment in a movie or ball game - KUDOS to SONY!!! COLOR, COLOR, COLOR!!! I still gaze in awe at the depth and beauty of the colors on this set. Compared to my old GE it''s like night and day. DVDs look absolutely gorgeous if you''re using the composite video inputs...just remember to hook an audio chord up as well or you''ll watch in silence - NOT that I did that or anything :-) Audio - some have complained about the audio quality of certain sets (including the Sonys) Granted, it''s not like having your 5.1 Surround Sound Kenwood beefing it out. I have to say, however, that I''m quite impressed - I am a DJ and audio enthusiast on the side and pretend to THINK that I know what good audio sounds like. Sony''s KV27FS13 has done well

Weakness:

Glare - I was under the impression that the flat screen would reduce glare from lights/windows in the room. I have not found this to be true. On the contrary, the glossy finish of the screen actually seems to enhance glaring. (If this is the only thing I can find bad, that''s GOOD!) You''ll have to fork out another $100 for the PIP.

This is a review of the Sony KV27FS13 and all I can say is WOW! For the past six years, I have been staring at a 25" GE tube which has been plagued with trouble since the day I bought it. Up until this weekend, I had no idea what I''ve been missing. After weeks of researching, I was very concerned over which brand, model to buy; but after using this set for a few days, I''m convinced I made a wise decision.

Strength:

For 550, only a few hundred more than the low end 27" tv''''s. Probably the best picture you can get in non-HD tv''''s, but the worst picture these days is close to the best. (Go to best buy and see this).

Weakness:

sony, contrary to what a lot of people think, is not know for reliability. Why do they only offer a 90 day warrant on everything? (Get the Best Buy extended warrany for only 50 extra).

I returned the first one because of a high pitched whistling sound coming from the electronics. The second one that I''''ve I had now for 8 months developed an intermittent whisling sound, but I''''ve learned to ignore it. My ears ring after watching it though. In general tube tv''''s all have a problem with high audible frequency sounds from the electronics, some more than others. Consumers don''''t complain, so its not fixed. I''''ve never seen an ad for a tv that featured silent operation. This sony has a great picture, especially with the component input from a dvd player. But all color tv''''s have a great picture these days, so I have trouble telling the difference between this wega and a $350 samsung or toshiba. The flat screen doesn''''t really do much - its nice but the curve of other non-flat tv''''s is pretty flat anyway. The wide screen mode is for dvd''''s. Its puts all scan lines in the picture area and none in the black bars on top and bottom when playing a wide screen dvd. But if sony hasn''''t added more pixels (higher dot pitch or dots/inch), then more scan lines are lighting the same pixels and you get a brighter picture, but not higher resoltion. You could trun up the brighness control to get the same effect. I can''''t say if sony added more dots to the triniton tube for this, but I doubt it. The sound is ok and the sound surround mode works great. Of course you don''''t get deep bass or high fidelity, but for normal viewing its fine. (I have a high end surround sound audio system for dvd''''s.) This tv weight 100 lbs, just light enough for one person to carry. The XDS caption mode is useful it displays the current show''''s name and time as caried along with the signal. But you have to go through a number of menu choices to turn it on/off, should have been a dedicated button.

Case, remote, audio output configuration, quality control problems at Sony

(Review for KV-27FS13) If you get one that works properly, you can''t get a better set. The first one I bought had a dead pixel in the middle of the screen. After enduring the unwiring process and re-boxing it (the damn thing weighs over 100 lbs!), I took it back and got one that''s perfect. I haven''t seen the geometry problems others have mentioned--horizontal lines from news tickers are straight and even. I don''t know what the hell VM (velocity modulation?)is and why other manufacturers are using it, but it''s horrible. The defaults are "ON", but for heaven''s sake, turn it off. I can''t believe an engineer actually looked at that and said, "Yeah, that''s an improvement." Horrible. I''m not too hip on the case--I don''t mind the silver color, but it just seems way too big at the bottom, and stylistically, it WILL start to look dated very soon. I don''t like the "fake" speaker appearance covering up the ACTUAL speaker which is considerably smaller. The audio ouput jacks are stupidly configured also: They only work when the TV''s speakers are disabled in the "Audio" menu. Which basically means you either have to ALWAYS use your home theatre stereo receiver or NEVER use it. (Or go through the menus to switch things around.) Picture quality, when tweaked a bit, is first-rate. The four modes--standard, sports, movie, and vivid--are useful, but only "standard" is fairly decent right out of the box. "Vivid" is really pretty bad, with severely overblown colors. Fortunately, you can adjust any/all of these to your likings. And they''re great to use, as cable broadcasts have considerably different profiles than DVD or DBS. The remote sucks, but most manufacturers'' remotes do. Why do they think we want rows and columns of small identically-sized buttons? The TV/Video button, for example, one that you''ll use a lot to switch between sources, is practically hidden. I could sketch a remote on a cocktail napkin in 30 seconds that would be MUCH more usable. (Maybe that''s my calling--remote control design.) Love the top-mounted controls. Why hasn''t anyone done that sooner? It''s so obvious! Bottom line: This set is a little bloated and pretentious, but there is no way you could get a better picture on another set. Absolutely stellar picture with component video sources.

Crystal clear video quality, when hooked up to DVD via s-video, it's almost 3D! Great new price at supreme. Allegedly world's best wega prices!

Weakness:

slight geometric distortion of horizontal lines

For the price and quality (did i mention CLEAR?) there is no better tv short of HDTV. The showroom can't do justice to this piece. Take it home!

Speakers could be stronger, but that's extremely minor.

Amazing television! We replaced a 1996 27" Trinitron, and Wega is miles ahead of it. First off, don't let the weight discourage you: it's not that heavy, and thankfully there were some molded 'indentations' in the back of the set, something which the massive '96 model didn't have. Two people can get the set out of the box and set up in seconds. The menu is exceptionally easy, and the tv's setup is foolproof. Our set is in a sunny room, which caused plenty of glare problems in the late afternoon, but on the Wega the glare is about 95% reduced. All the inputs are very handy, as are the front input jacks.

Best of all is the 16 x 9 feature. Incredible! Watching dvd's on the regular seting was impressive, but the 16 x 9 blew that out of the water. It'll ruin my vhs viewing forever.

As for the Expressvu pixelation problems mentioned on this page, there's no problem here. Also, no 'pink stripe', no geometry problems...the tv has been hassle-free.

If you're not ready to make the leap to HDTV, but still want a quality television, by all means pick up a Wega!
