Strength:

Lots of features

Weakness:

Seeing raster (sometimes) diagonally across from top left to bottom right.

I have been using this TV set for a while now. I have noticed a CRT raster while watching DVD movies. The raster appears to be diagonal from top-left to bottom right.
Anybody else encountered a smililar problem ?
Does anyone know how should I hook up the TV so I can make use of PIP with the digital cable (The TV is set to Channel 3) ? I have digital cable, DVD/Amp (one piece - SONY DAV-S300 and VCR.

Just got my new Sony Wega TV KV-27V16 a couple of days ago. Since I came to this site to read the reviews/comments before I did my purchase I wanted to contribute in some way to the site. The Sony Wega is awesome nearly perfect flat picture out of the box. I have yet to play with the calibration stuff. Weights a ton but who cares, what matters is the incredible definition that you get from this baby. I did look at others Tv's and side by side comparison with the toshibas the sony always capture my attention. Looking for the best price got a few quotes from some of the
internet.com shops walk into Sears where they matched the best price. Carry the ton wega to a van with help from my brother, and a big smile on my face.

Flat Picture, great definition

Just wanted to make a correction on my review of 4/12/01 on the price that I paid for my Sony Wega. The price was $642.00 and not $542.00 as I had put down. The price of $642.00 for those interested was fromWholesaleConnection.Com. My apologies for the mistake.
So far my Sony 27" Wega has been working flawlessly, just awesome. Have yet to tinker with any of the adjustments or fine tuning. My understanding is to give the TV a breaking period before any adjustments, and quite honestly I do not see any necessary on mine. I highly recommend this TV
for any one interested in good quality.

Strength:

the style of the tv, great picture, nice to know that I have some power in the tv speakers. How you can see your favorites through pip

Weakness:

two man lifting tv, remote could have better, not a big deal though.

Great tv, this is something where I can get started to make an awesome mini theater. I've been wanting to get this tv for the longest time, I am happy with this decision, no regrets. The picture is superb, it improves the picture from some cinemaster german tv thing.

Strength:

16:9 vertical compression, better TV sound than most TV's, clean, defined, vibrant colors once adjusted

Weakness:

scan lines still visible even after hours of tuning

Out of the box the settings needed much adjustment. Brightness and color were set way too high as well as the sharpness giving the picture a harsh, distorted look. After careful calibration and hours of adjustments it was easy to see that once set right the picture was stunning although scan lines were still somewhat visible. Convergence was right on the money which was quite surprising.

16:9 Enhanced mode is a great way to get a somewhat "HD" picture out of the tube. Without wasting lines of resolution you can still get the 16:9 aspect of most DVD's. Nice feature.

After careful calibration and using component inputs, it is one of the nicest 27" TV's out there.

Strength:

Overall Picture Quality, Inputs, VSM defeat, 4 picture presets

Weakness:

Pink and pale green vertical stripes

Outstanding TV. If you're looking for the best picture in a 27" set this is the one to get. Even though this one is going back ...

This one has the pink/green stripe problem. It is the only problem it has. I called Sony and they told me it could be fixed with manual degaussing. The Sony authorized service tech came out today to look at it. He didn't agree with the diagnosis, degaussed it anyway, it made no difference. The tech said it was a picture tube problem and that it might have come from the factory that way but more likely sustained damage (to the mask?) during transportation from rough handling or dropping. It's within a 30 day return policy from Tweeter and they'll deliver and set up a new set within a couple of days.

Prior to this Wega we bought and returned 2 of the Tau sets. One had a defective deflection yoke and the other one had thoroughly screwed up power regulation and resultant major geometry problems. Even allowing for these problems, the Wega has a vastly better picture.

The ability to turn off VSM from the user menu is a major plus with the Wega (absent in the Tau). With VSM on, local newscasters had 'Got Milk?' moustaches, hockey pucks had wide glowing white rings around them, text was very hard to read, and on and on. Turn it off - everything is perfect.

Not all cable channels are equal in quality. Some dark, some light, some over saturated, some near B&W. The 4 picture presets can be adjusted individually to allow for these variances. Make the adjustments, and all it takes is a couple of quick clicks to get the picture the way you want it. A very nice feature.

I am able to get a terrific picture on this set without having to go into the service settings. The geometry is excellent, convergence is on the money. If it weren't for those pink and green stripes I'd be in TV heaven. This is the perfect set for a medium to small living area (11' x 17'). Can't wait for the new one to arrive.

Weakness:

Unknown at this point

This is in response to Peter's comments (see previous review). It really sounds like you don't know how to set up the sound on this set. I have the sound going to my surround sound setup and have no problems at all. I bet if you set up the sound options correctly on both your TV and your receiver you wouldn't have the problems you mentioned. I have yet to use this with a DVD player but am sure I'll be wowed.

Picture and audio quality, physical look

Weakness:

It is amazing what a good tv will do to cable and movies, after using a samsung for 3years I could not settle on anything less than a sony flatscreen. The picture quality is second only to the xbr which is only offered in 32" and 36" which was too big and too pricy for me. Forget the panablack, tau or what ever they want to call it, the sony is the first and only true flat screen on the market. Outside of the added glass on the corners that don't help corner convergence, the other so called flatscreen still don't use a single gun and verticle appature grill that offers brighter and more colorful picture with accurate corner to corner focus. The enhanced widescreen options is exceptional on DVD movies, offering true widescreen without picture manipulation in stretching or cutting. This tv offers audio capabilities found only on the bigger sony models with 4 sets of inputs.1component, front&back AV/S video and 2 sets of outputs, 1 monitor out, second audio var/fixed. I would have to say this is the best 27"tv that is non HD, even better than some HD tvs using regular cable feed I have seen around.

Strength:

The Picture if you can get a good set.

Weakness:

Remote, Speakers

This TV is a little over-hyped. When you get a good one it works and looks like a charm. Unfortionately Not all Sony Wega's are created equal. My set I bought had the pink vertical curvy line along the left edge. When I used my Digital Cable box the TV picture was fine. When I used my PS2 and DreamCast with the component or even the standare AV inputs the picture was fine except for that pink curvy line I mentioned. Instead of having a Full square picture on all sides, the pink line became the left edge of any of the AV inputs. So the top, bottom, and right side of the image was fine; but the left side was the curvy pink like that stood about half a centimeter from the left edge of screen. I had bought this set Friday the 5th of January. So I took the set back to Circuit City. They were out of the KV-27FV16's. So I just got my credit card credited. I look at some other sets. The only comparable one was a flat screen Phillips. It was 100 dollars cheaper, but it only came with a 3 line digital comb filter. Now I'm holding off on getting another Wega. I heard that all the major manufacturers will be coming out with New Flat Screen Models Soon. So now I'm waiting to see whats out on the horizon.
