Strength:

Crisp picture that works well with my dish. DVD's look amazing. Blacks sometimes not as sharp as I would like, but I probably just need to properly calibrate it.

Weakness:

There is a light band on bright screens that takes up the midle third of the TV. A repair guy came and said he could nothing for it? For $1000 bucks I was hoping for a different answer.

Here's the thing with this TV, when it's on its game, it looks amazing, great color, contrast, sharpness, and I really dig the 16:9 feature for DVD's where it comes close to HDTV quality, but not quite. I actually use the VM system on the low setting because I like a really crisp picture. The flat screen limits glare and looks much better than any tradionaly tube TV I have seen, and since at the time HDTV's were going for 2 plus grand this was the best bet for me. The speakers aren't great, but I don't care because I pump my system through my Denon receiver and PSB's which sounds amazing. The remote is easy to use, there are plenty of inputs, etc. overall a very nice TV for the cash.
My one problem with the set is that every now and then, not always, but enough to notice, the middle one third of the TV has a slightly brighter band running horizontally. This to me is very annoying when I see it. I had an authorized Sony repair guy come to look at it, and he said nothing could be done for it. Now for $1000 I would expect a different answer, but I didn't get it. On some different posts I saw other people complain about the same thing and I guess it is just a defect on some of the TV's not all. I was unlucky enough to get one.
But despite that minor annoyance, I still really like this TV and am still amazed sometimes by the picture quality since it isn't HD.
My only advice would be to make sure you see the picture you are getting before you get it home, because this damn thing is heavy as a beast and you are likely not to get it back out the door once you have it in place.
Hope this helps.

Strength:

Great Picture...never fail performance & good sound from factory speakers

Weakness:

need 35 & a hand-truck to move it. 16:9 mode makes picture smaller than the remote.

Great TV for the $$. Not reccomended for people without help to move it around more than a foot. The 16:9 mode does compress the picture for great resolution, but makes the picture about 1/3rd of the screen size. Progressive scan DVD or a line-doubler makes the normal mode much more tolerable.

One of the greatest strengths I find in this set is the ability to pratically watch it while sitting beside it, there are no weak spots in the picture from any angle unlike a conventional tube TV. Definately reccomended for small rooms with an awkward seating arrangement looking for high quality home theater in a reasonable size.

GREAT Picture

Weakness:

No 3-D filter

Would have bought the FV16, but space did not allow. This model will fit into narrower spaces than the FV. This does not have the 3-D filter, so titles and other printed material not quite as clear. But the difference is very small, and the 3-D does not help a non-stationary object. The picture is sensational, particularly hooked up to DVD by Ultra Component Video Cable (2M) by Better Cables.

The picture off the regular cable (CATV) is very good on some stations. For the price, this tv will do until HDTV becomes practicable.

HEAVY UNIT! No Advanced Filtering (See Tom's description below), Does require some setup tweaking

I needed an upgraded TV with component video input for the DVD player (got tired of not being able to read football scores in the corner of the Zenith)... I typically do not purchase first generation equipment, so I decided to forgo HDTV now and get this TV.

Tom hit the nail on the head as well about the size. Size was a major concern for me to fit in my entertainment center. This TV BARELY fit (I had to push a bit!) in my "32 inch" entertainment center. If I had not purchased the center a year ago, I would have gone projection or 36". Oh well.

I use this TV with digital cable (svideo) , DVD's (component), PSX (composite), PS2 (svideo), SVHS (svideo) and VHS(composite) input sources and it absolutely makes the video look great. I turned off the internal speakers and use the audio outs of the TV to my surround receiver for analog sources.

The settings out of the box stink, so many nights of tweaking (for preference and using the setup DVD I purchased) followed to get what I thought was perfect. I find that a "cool" setting looks the best with very little "sharpness" in the picture. I like my video a bit brighter, so I tweaked the brightness/contrast up a bit. I also turned off all that picture enhancement stuff.

The remote is okay, but I don't use it anyway (I have the Philips Pronto TSU2000.) My first and only impression was it would be nice to have discrete buttons for the inputs (four buttons) versus one button that cycles.

All in all, great TV at a good price. A good interim step before HDTV

Sony Warranty

Guys, when you buy this TV, or I guess any expensive Sony
TV, make sure you get the store exchange/return warranty,
which effectively will increase the cost of the TV.
I didn't, having thought that I won't have troubles with a
Sony product. The TV started malfunctioning less than a
month after I bought it, and it was too late to take it back
to the Wiz (they only accept them within the first 2 weeks).
So I called Sony and they gave me the telephone number of
the repair service in Manhattan. The guy came, a few days
after I called them and took all the circuitry, then a week
and a half later came again and took the rest of the TV. I
called them the following week, and they said they have to
order a new tube. I called them again today, another week
later, and they said the tube they ordered was busted during
transportation so they have to order another one. I called
Sony, asking them how long am I supposed to stay without the
TV, and why don't they just give me a new TV, since the
repair guys are effectively assembling a new one for me
anyway. The representative at 1-800-222-7669 told me that
Sony doesn't exchange products unless the TV cannot be
repaired (something other than a picture tube or a
circuitry is broken?), and that they don't supervise the
repair service providers they contract, or instruct them to
give you a replacement TV while they are struggling with
the damaged one, or have any time limits for them to repair
the TV. You be the judge if you will put up with this kind
of customer service before paying $1200 for a TV. As for
me, this is the last Sony product I've bought.

Flat Screen

Weakness:

Component Video connection causes "green tint". T.V. is ugly looking.

This t.v. is awful value for your dollar. I had it for approximately three weeks and hated the colours from a DVD source connected via component video cables. I had a green tint which could not be adjusted. I tried everything including purchasing one of those technical DVDs which are supposed to help you set up color and sound. Although the picture was good on S-Video, I ended up returning it. For the money spent, I was not prepared to accept such a problem on the component connection. If the t.v. was more reasonably priced, I might have kept it just for the flat t.v. which was great at preventing light reflection.

As an aside, I do not like the unit's design.

Strength:

Picture is awesome - sound is fine (but get an AV receiver - this thing is made for home theater).

Weakness:

None (quit bitchin' about size, price!) except for that infernal popping every so often.

Bought Sony 'cause my Grandma had Trinitrons and I always thought the picture was great. This TV doesn't disappoint. So it's heavy. So's my refrigerator. So it has lines. As long as you view at the proper distance, the lines don't show. Don't buy a 32" for viewing distance of less than 10 feet. Buy a 27" or smaller. It's a little expensive, but this is the best picture I have ever seen except for high-end plasma screens. Only one problem. I get an occasional pop/flash on the screen. I thought it was power surges and bought a surge protector. Problem still occurs. Maybe I need a better power conditioner. Anyway, except for the occasional, fleeting blip, this thing rocks.

great picture and sound. flat screen. tons of connections.

Weakness:

none.

Easy to use remote and on screen menu. Many connections on back and some even in front for videogame or camcorder. Flat screen yields great picture. Even w/o being hooked up to amp still has great sound. Sony always produces great tv's.

Strength:

Flat screen, detailed picture. Very good with digital cable and DVD's. Very little glare (thanks to flat screen).

Weakness:

As noted by everyone else, It's *$#%ING HEAVY.It would also look way better in black. The newer models are dark silver, which is better, but I hope this silver tone fad goes away soon. Slight bit of distortion in upper right corner that tilt correction can quite fix when viewing certian things.

First of all the guy a few reviews above this one who had a normal picture with S- Video but a green tint with component probably had two of the cables crossed. There are 2 different sets of letters for component video(Y-Pb-Pr)and the ones on the back of this TV, but they are the same. When hooking it up the first time I got black and white, switched two of them, got a green tint, tried again and got it. It took all of about 1 minute,no need to return it- Duh! It is not hard to figure out.

And what a great picture after you do figure it out!!! Get good cables(Wireworld or Straightwire, not Monster) You need to adjust properly (I got video essentials DVD at Costco for $16.00). Movies are much more film like than any non HDTV I have ever seen. I love my home theater and watch movies a lot, but I also watch regular cable TV too much to want to put up with 16:9 aspect ratio for every day viewing (everyone looks like a conehead)I found this to be a nice compromise for DVD's and normal TV. This is a great TV, but do not count on any customer service from Sony- Dell got everyone spoiled. Take some time and figure all the features out. I think you will be impressed.
