Strength:
Best picture tube ever built! Priceless picture quality!
Weakness:
Weighs over 200 pounds.....a serious TV... This is the only piece of equipment I have ever bought that wasn't what I set out to get. I usually research, study, compare, etc. and pretty much have my mind made up before I leave the house. I needed a new TV a few years ago, was set on getting a Sony TV, nothing special, a good 27-32" XBR. I was looking and happened to see this beast, almost $3,300.00..way out of my spending range. I kept looking, and kept getting drawn back to this TV. 32 " picture tube. It was putting out a stunning picture. Bar none, the best in the store. $3.300.00...ouch...no way I could afford it. Way over my original budget. The salesman could see I needed this TV, we had a mutual friend at another Good Guys, and we worked out a pretty good deal, considering. I was sure hoping I didn't make a big mistake! This TV has without a doubt the finest built picture tube you will ever see. Sony must have made a mistake, because this goes above and beyond reference quality. You play a well produced laserdisc or DVD through this TV and it cannot get much better or more satisfying. The colors are perfect, the blacks are just unbelievable, the adjustments available...all p.e.r.f.e.c.t.! I think picture tubes give the best picture in the 27-40" models. I am not real familiar with some of the newest TVs, except that a comparable TV with this picture quality is probably over $5,000.00! This TV is probably 5-6 years old now, and I just got a Denon DVD3800, and the combination is enough to make you cry!!! Unbelievable quality...gets better with age....no need yet for a new wiz bang progressive scan TV...this is the ultimate. I know now thay I didn't make a huge mistake 6 years ago! Strength:
Breathtaking filmlike picture, pleathora of inputs, and tweakers dream.
Weakness:
Wish it were bigger and had component video inputs. I bought this set new in 1997 and love it just as much 6 years later. It is hands down the best direct view TV out there, notwithstanding htdv. For broadcast TV nothing is better. The tube is the best Sony has ever or will ever make. This is a reference standard TV not an overhyped piece of consumer grade equipment. The WEGA sets don't compare...nothing does. You can surf the net for one or try prying mine from my dead cold fingers. Similar Products Used: Panasonic CTP-27xf20. A really slick 27 inch with remarkable picture for the price, but also no longer available. |

Strength:
Picture (only bettered by HDTV) 5 Video Inputs (S or Composite) 3-D Digital Comb filter Adjustable color temperature Compact monitor design Sony warranty service
Weakness:
Some geometry. Wish it had Component Inputs. Sony did an incredible job on this video product. They put all their engineering resources and expertise into the KV-32XBR100 and it shows. At $3300 retail, there''s no cost-cutting here. Fortunate to find this unit as a floor unit on sale at closeout. Took a chance and purchased it even though the unit was DOA but the Sony service center performed the necessary miracles to make it work. I have enjoyed so many LDs and DVDs on this TV. Particularly when using the Movie and NTSC color settings, you can achieve a very film-like quality. Even quality NTSC cable broadcasts look amazingly three-dimensional and noise-free thanks to the excellent 3-D comb filter. Color accuracy is exceptional, not as Red as other Sony sets I have seen. Of course, it is only bettered by higher-resolution video products capable of HD. The five video inputs are more than enough. Its compact, monitor-style design is modern without being too ambitious or overbearing. A true videophile product even today with HD-capable direct-view sets. Strength:
Beautiful picture
Weakness:
Speakers are not that clear since they are not a direct fire. I spent considerable time comparing this TV to all other TVs. The picture is the best. I looked at the newer sony TVs and they appear to have a little more grain or hardness than this older XBR100. I have the speakers disconnected and hooked up to a larger sound system which sounds great. Similar Products Used: panasonic |

I agree with the review below.this TV is indeed better than the new SONYS XBRs(its more filmlike, with one of the best comb filters I've ever seen). However, the geometry distortions from the new SONYS are present on this set as well. Beware! If you stump on this TV somewhere(I've seen one for sale for mere 900 dollars) make sure that yo watch only regular pan&scan videos. Widescreen movies are unawatchable on this TV, due to the geometry errors. Im going to rate this TV only 2 speakers, due to the fact that widescreen movies are widely available and TVs today have the obrigation to show acceptable geometry. Also, You can get a brand new TOSHIBA 32'' for 500/600 dollars whch offers better geometry than SONYs and excellent picture quality. |

This television first came out around 1995. It is still the best direct view NTSC television on the market for consumers. If you can find it buy it. You can probably get it in the $1,000 range, but remember, when it first came out, it retailed for $3,300.00. It is better than the new Sony xbr(s), particularly the 36xbr200. |

Strength:
awsome picture quality, high contrast and if you have a SAT....this is a must have. it can be compared to HD because it produces 800 lines.
Weakness:
when it first came out (1995) retail preice was around $3000. Some quality problems but there were imeddiatly fix by Sony's great warranty. i paid $2600 and it was worth it though because you buy a tv for 5 to 10 years to watch. do you want to watch a crappy tv for 5 to 10 years! no way! thats why i bought this tv. OH! BTW. I did have pin cooshin problems with the set after a year and half of use. Since the set was still under warrenty, Sony sent a guy over to fix it and took the tab. So far i had this tv for 5 years and it produces a picture that cant be seen on any analog tv (the wega's, they dont look as good trust me there sreen is just flatter) thats it, and the xbr2 screen is'nt a bubble like some really cheap set.If you see one in the store, GRAB IT because it it a rare tv. Unforunatly, i heard these sets are really hard to find now these days because sony cut production due to low sales. So was 2600 dollars was a good value for the tv. yeah, even though some people thought i was nuts...4 stars overall its THE BEST ANALOG TV OUT THERE! Similar Products Used: A 1970 Zenith |
