Strength:

Overall great HT set. Two tuner pip and very good sound for a tv.

Weakness:

Remote can be confusing. Until you learn it.

I agree with everything the reviewer before me said. this is a VERY heavy set and must take two people to install it without breaking something. It is just so front heavy. I have a very nice armoire and it makes the supports sag. If you can get it in your house you have got it made because it is one beautiful picture. Everything is very user friendly, even the remote after you spend a few days with it. I have a remote from my Marantz 19ex receiver that I use to run everything, but the sony is just fine. You have to be pretty picky to find something less than great about this set. Go get it! A++

Strength:

Good punchy colors, great whites, good detail

Weakness:

HORRIBLE BLACKS, 35" being smaller than competition's 36"

I actually had a Sony KV-32S45 that was a major headache. It was fixed once for improper grounding or shielding. I then had another problem which the repair shop gave up on, and deemed the television none repairable. Luckily, the retailer gave me an in store credit for the television.

My set was a stand out 2 years ago, when most makers didn't make true black tubes. Now, everyone has a black tube, EXCEPT Sony's S series.

While I haven't been happy with a majority of televisions, this set is OVER PRICED VERY SIGNIFICANTLY.

I've had wierd problems with a few brands on the 36" models. I get these strange horizontal lines(not scan lines)on reds, oranges, and grays. It's very distracting on still images but completely unbearable on vertically panning objects. Funny thing on some televisions, these lines aren't apparent, and on others, very apparent. For this reason, Toshiba and JVC are out of the running. These lines just drive me nuts, although JVC isn't 1/5 as bad as the terrible 36" Toshibas. Funny, these problems are virtually none existant on the 32" versions of the same model. I can only contribute this to poor "36 inch" tube design, where internals must get shifted in transportation to cause these lines.

Without a doubt, these televisions without the apparent lines, literally blow the Sony out of the water. The Sony can't produce natural or real blacks. The reason is it's impossible for these Sonys to produce blacks because the "tube is not black, but dark gray"! So blacks have this washed out appearance compared to the better televisions of today. Also, the Velocity Modulation Scanning can't be turned off, as with the Wegas. This produces artificial looking edges and reduces picture definition.

I've had problems finding a Panasonic Demo that doesn't have it's picture tilted due to very poor geometry. So that makes the better color, black, white producing sets limited, leaving out Toshiba, JVC, and now Panasonic.

Left is Hitachi, Philips, and Sony. It's unfortunate that so many 36" sets are plagued by quality control problems "out of the box"! That is Sony's only benefit, out of the box, these sets are usually problem free.

However, being problem free out of the box shouldn't be an advantage, but the standard. The price on these Sonys should be competitive since in reality, that don't offer as good picture performance, as most others. Sony is really at dead last in my book, but consideration was due to other's problems right out of the box.

If anything, Sony's price should be at least $50 less than other competitor's models of same features, also due to the Sony's smaller 35" tube. Unfortunately Sony's 35S66 model sells for $150-$200 "MORE" then all of it's competitors. This is simply unreasonable, and quite frankly, a rip off!

These sets are smaller than the competition, offer worse black output reproduction, and offer poor reliability.

Advantage, usually work perfect out of the box.

This set is truly a rip off in it's 32" version, were other maker's sets are not plagued with their 36" set's troubles.

Better than Philips/Magnavox, RCA, GE, Zenith, and most generic brands.

Inferior to Toshiba, JVC, Panasonic, Philips, or Hitachi.

Strength:

BIG, Clear Picture, Warm flesh tones, many features (i.e., 2 tuner picture-in-picture, adequate sound from built-in speakers, crisp channel seperation.

Weakness:

Slightly confusing remote control (some buttons are small and in odd locations on the remote), Set is extremely HEAVY (feels as if filled with cement!), no auto caption on mute, consumes a great deal of electricity

I have been wanting to try a Sony Trinitron model TV for some time now. They always seem to bring high reviews. This television is no disapointment! I love the picture quality and the large amount of features the set has to offer. Even the built-in speakers have a more than adequate sound when equalized a bit (via built in bass and treble controls). My biggest complaint with this set is the rather confusing remote button locations and sizes. The mute button is no where near the volume controls, and the "last channel viewed" button (labeled "JUMP") is far too small. I also dislike the fact that you have to push the VERY SMALL "Enter" button to complete your channel selection (unless you want to wait for a 5 second pause after keying in your numbers). For a television of this caliber, I am rather frustrated with the poor remote control layout!

Also, I nearly damaged our entertainment center trying to lift this set up and into the opening. Even with two people (myself and a friend) we nearly lost control of the set while trying to manuver it into the entertainment center. The front of the set is so much heavier than the rear that the set wants to tip forward. In any case, once installed the TV works without a flaw. This set will help make your local electric company rich, but overall I am extremely happy with the quality and design of this television, and I think most other picky viewers would be as well. Name brand aside (not all Sony televisions are great), this model TV is sure to please anyone who owns it.
