My 36XBR200 has obvious flaws: the left side and upper left corner have severe shading and there is bad geometric distortion on the left side of the screen. I have missed work to wait for 3 service calls. Sony obviously doesn't give a damn about my time because they insist on making further attempts to fix the set, rather than allow me to return the set at the retailer. I have had several trinitrons before this one and I have never encountered any problems previous to this set. DO NOT BUY THIS TELEVISION. Wegas may be ready for the market some day, but they are not at this time. Sony professes to have correct the problems with the Wegas in December of 1998. Well, my set was built in February of 1999 and I can't imagine what they looked before December of 1998.
After the trouble this set continues to cause, due to it's defects and Sony's lack of concern for their customers, I wish I could give it zero stars.

I wish people would stop calling it Wega it is Vega. It looks like a w but isreally a superimposed V. I sell this television and we had training from
Sony upon its released. They clearified this and said that Vega is the brightest
star in the universe and that's why they used this name for there flat picture
tube.

Strength:

heavy, decent menu

Weakness:

everything else

I am afraid I spent all my money way back when and bought this hunk of junk. Now, I have more pressing upgrades lke my receiver and speakers.
Anyways, mine bows on the upper left corner, and it is significant.

On another note, can someone PLEASE tell me how to do the "squeeze trick" on this TV? I know to adjust VSIZ and VHGT in the service menu, but I cannot find the proper values. Can someone that has this set please post the proper numerical values to get as close as accurate 16x9 squeeze?

Thanks

I too have the same problems with the 36" WEGA. I have had the TV in for service at a full service center in Westwood, MA. When I got the TV back, the picture was worse than before. I have been waiting patiently for Sony to replace my set with a new one for over 4 weeks now. They keep telling me it will be in soon. I hope that I receive an acceptble working set. I also have heard that these problems were not totally addressed until the March production dates.

Bought one of these in December. I had exactly the same probelms Anthony described. Apparently it is a serious quality control problem. My FOURTH unit was finally good enough to keep. It is by no means perfect. There is no discoration, but there are minor geometry problems. There is a slight horizontal bowing near the top of the picture and a very slight vertical curvature near left top. Sets from competitive exhibit geometry problems at least as great, so I guess I can live with it.
Anyway the first three sets rate ZERO stars. The final one rates 4 stars. Total rating 1 star simply because only 1 set in 4 had acceptable quality.

By the way, Sony also tried to claim the third set I tried was within parameters. It along withe the first 2 sets were unacceptable. If anyone is contemplating a purchase of thes set, charge it. You have 60 days to reverse charges. Only a threat to reverse charges got them to replace the third set they gave me.

I just happened across these reviews of the Sony KV36XBR200. I purchased this TV back in December, and I too have noticed geometry problems, although not too severe. I've also noticed that the TV seems to be temperamental: when it's good, it's great, and when it's bad, it can be terrible and fatiguing. I had always assumed it was the cable feed, even though the quality could change from channel to channel, but I think I'll have it checked out anyway. Certainly the flickering and wavering I see often in portions of the screen cannot be the fault of the feed. It's just surprising that a cutting edge "flat" screen TV would or should have these kinds of problems, especially the flagship TV of arguably the best mass manufacturer of TVs. It is also dismaying to hear Sony's response to many of these service issues.
I must say however that the picture quality can be really great more often than not, and overall I really enjoy it, so I will give it 3 stars.
One final note to the "management" of this website: your warning about multiple posts robs us of a valuable tool to keep each other informed of continuing issues like quality control and customer service. This product site offers an easy to find repository of comments on a particular product, unlike the Techtalk discussion area which consists basically of myriad unrelated and disjointed discussions that are soon relegated to archives. Perhaps you should consider adding a "neutral" rating option (as an alternative to "stars") that does not impact the overall product rating.

i have read many reviews on this set... i have the kv32v65 and have gone through 2 different sets. the problem is similar to the problems i have been reading about this set. i have a dark blob in the lower right corner. it isn't too bad, but when virwing a white or light background it is more noticeable. the good guys tech said it was the picture tube and to solve it the tube must be replaced and there would be no guarantee that the new tube would be any better.the benefits of this tv outweigh the discrepancy of this set. i am upset t hat sony products seem to be declining. i'm sure my next purchase of any sort of electronics will not be sony...
