Strength:

Out standing picture after beaning played with, programable, many features, some that I need.

Weakness:

Yes like some T.Vs there are some glites, The price well if you want a mercedes you have to pay for a mercedes.Weight.

Once I moved out on my own I started beilding my home theater I started off with the heart Denon AVR 4800 and Paradigm studio 100 that are bi-wired. I then purchuse Elite DV-37. I since purchuse Rotel RCD-991 compact disc player, paradigm serveo 15 sub, paradigm center channel active cc, camber book self bi-wired for sorround, paradigm active 40 for ex- sorround that is tri-wired and panamax max 500 dbs surge protction.
All are conected with ulta link cables.

I recently made a finnal purchuse of the sony xbr 450 36 inch. The reason for a 36 inch is of the picture, for larger screens are of poor qualitiy.
Now too the picture you set down on the average evening to watch a dvd with the kids or some one else, than no you will not notice any thing also like most T.Vs if you look for probli=ums your find them.
They are heavy and wont fit in any wall unites on the general marked so I had one made, if yiu set and look you will find something just like audio nothing is perfect yet, but thius close.
In short it is a good T.V go too a small shop for they value the bisness so they will too your house too fix it after all it is $4100.00 cdn. One thing on dvds with screen savers the T.V dose turn off. Speaker grill dont touch them and they wont fall off. Use good cables too hook it up and you wont have problums off good dvd sorces..
Eemote is poor also is sony sapport on the internet if you go there...
Sony is very good for T.Vs are some DVDs but I would not buy there compact disc players or recivers...

First I would like to ask why is there no listing of the 36XBR450 or 32XBR450 on Audioreview.com ? People have to have their reviews of those TVs listed under last years XBR400 (like I am doing).

I have been trying to decided between the Panasonic 36HX41 and Sony 36XBR450 for a few weeks now. I have seen both TVs on display severial times. From what I have seen, the XBR450 has some strong points over the HX41. First, there was little to no geometric issues. I saw the HX41 playing Cast Away on DVD. The bottom left of the picture was lower than the bottom right, making it look tilted. There was no way to adjust this in the menu. Second, the picture looked too dark. I turned up the brightnes which did help, but it make any white areas booming which is very eye-hurting over periods of time. Third, the picture looked too pixalated. It was hooked up to the sony n700p progressive dvd player. The image did look best having the TV do the progressive line doubling instead of the DVD player. When watching a cable/sat tv, the image was much worse. Images looked blotchy and square and looked much worse than a standard Panasonic analog TV set next to it.

I then looked at the XBR450 playing the same sceen from Cast Away. The picture had a much better color balance to it. It did however look a wee bit muted, but turning up the 'picture' setting a few notches made an improvement. DVD picture looked to have more detail than the HX41 and not as pixalated looking. Again the image was best having the TV do the progressive line doubling than having it done in the Sony DVP-N700P DVD player. I guess that DVD player isn't that good as far as progressive goes. When watching cable/sat chanels the picture was noticably better than the HX41. It had a more natural and smoth look; not so blotchy. As far as the Sony DCR (digital reality circuitry), I think having it display at 480P looks better than at 980i. Image detail looks the same, but the 480P has a more stable 'flicker-free' image.

Lastly are the remotes. The HX41 remote is slighty better than last years HX40. However the remote for the XBR450 is beautiful. Charcol-Gray/Silver which matches the TV color. There is a joystick device on the bottom which makes it very easy to navagate menus. The top flips open to reveal controls for other devices (dvd, cable/sat box, vcr). The XBR450 is a slighty darker silver than the XBR400. Also the on-screen menu on the XBR450 is more user friendly and has more color/picture/sound adjustments than the HX41. One thing is that I can't believe that the XBR450 has a 'tilt' adjustment where the HX41 does not. Even my 5 year old 32" Sharp TV has that.

Overall I still think the Panasonic is a good TV despite its short comings. I had seen the HX40 earlier this year and had hoped that the HX41 was going to be a better set. Sorry to say that it's only slightly better. Yes the HX41 picture is better than the HX40, but not as good as the XBR450. Even though the HX41 has the geomety issue and darker picture, it may not bother some people, and at $250 less than the XBR450 it's a good buy.

I ended up buying the 36xbr450 to be delivered next week. I think that I may purchase the Pioneer Elete DV-37 DVD player as well. I have heard wonderful things about it, and it probably provides a better picture compaired to the sony n700p dvd player. I shall have to see. I will have a review of the TV after it is delivered and I've had some time to test it out.

Strength:

Picture quality, built like a battleship, head-turning envy

Weakness:

This thing is HEAVY and EXPENSIVE (typical comments on high-end equipment whether audio or video, actually)

This review is for the KV36XBR450. Just got mine from Circuit City. This is the best television set on the market, period, end-of-story. Forget the rear and front projection jobs, as well as other lesser direct view sets. This Sony Wega will bridge the capability between today's and tomorrow's sets better than anything else, since it does the 16:9 thing by focusing the guns in the letterbox, not in the empty black fields above and below the picture; preserves the ability to view 4:3 source material; has component video capability; and is HDTV compliant with the additional purchase of a separate set-top box. I compared the picture side-by-side with other so-called "digital-ready" sets and the Sony hands-down had a better picture, not marginally, but significantly. I will not get into all of the different features and settings on this TV since anyone can look at the previuos postings and consumer review sites to read abiut that. What I will comment on is the feeling you get when you see just how much better and clearer the picture is on this bad boy. Again, this is not an evolutionary improvement but a revolutionary one, since the picture is so stunning in detail, clarity, color, and impact. Yeah, it costs over 2 grand no matter if you get it online or at a store (once shipping, tax, and a stand are added in), but you know what?.....I haven't thought about the 2 grand since I turned on the damn picture....it is worth every penny and more actually, and that's the way I define a bargain.

This is a follow-up to a post I made in April, 01. I have used the XBR400 for about 4 months now. As mentioned in my previous post, the set is incredible and I would highly recommend. However about a month ago I started noticing an intermittent problem. About 4 out 10 times when you turn the set on, you would either see A) very noticeable shades or blotches of green and yellow in three corners - upper left, upper right and lower right. Or B) only one blotch of green or purple in the lower left corner. To remedy the problem, I waited until the set warmed up (about 15 minutes), shut if off and on and the picture was normal. I called for service and Sony doesn't have a clue. They think it might be a degaussing problem. Has anybody experienced this or a similar problem, and what did you do or have done to correct? Thanks

Strength:

Cable and Satellite are NOT as bad as everyone says

Weakness:

Ok crowd mentality. Yes it's HEAVY!

First off, great TV. From all that I can tell, the new Sony 36HS20 is last years 36XBR400. If anyone knows differently please let me know. The only difference I can find is that the set is now charcoal gray instead of silver and looks much nicer. I have seen the 3:2 pull down in the XBR 450 and I can’t see any difference. So $100 less and a nicer looking set made my decision.

Now the rest of the story. I had been debating for quit a while over projection, 16:9, and the XBR. After reading all the horror stories about how bad cable / satellite TV looked on the XBR, and how there is no HDTV in my area, I bought a Sony projection KP-43T75.
DVD’s were great…nice and big, clear, just what I wanted. Cable, Satellite, and OTA looked like crap. Some channels were fine, but too many looked horrible so I took it back.
So then I started to think about the Toshiba wide screen 40H80. The picture was great but 4:3 broadcast TV was smaller than my current 32 in Mitsubishi. Unacceptable for that kind of money. Add in the horror stories of problems with its picture tube, and the fear of burn in from channel logos. That was out of there.
Finally I came back full circle to the XBR. I did some checking and found out that DTV…was at least on the way in my local area. And decided I would be a fool to spend this kind of cash on a new TV and now have HDTV/DTV capability. I saw the 36HS20 and loved the new Charcoal color over the crappy silver of the XBR. Did some research and as far as I can tell…it is last years XBR400.

This TV is stellar. The picture w/ DVD’s is awesome. Crappy satellite and cable channels are acceptable, and most channels look great. Compared with the projection 43T75, well, there is no comparison. The 43T75 is junk for anything other than DVD’s.

The other reviewers complaints about crappy satellite and cable didn’t turn out to be true for me. I have Direct TV and Cable…and an antenna. Yes bad input gives a less than perfect picture…but most stuff looks great to fantastic.
Very happy here.

Weakness:

Documentation and sensitivity to less-than-perfect signal

Love It! Picture is absolutely amazing, but as others have mentioned, it is sensitive to less-than-perfect signal. I have DirecTV through a Sony digital DSS receiver. With my old TV, satellite was the best picture. With the XBR, the picture from my land ant is better. Go figure.

I am however very confused regarding the whole progressive scan issue. Bottom line: Does the XBR truly display 480p? I hooked up a Mitsu 6000 Prog. DVD player and I think it was only displaying 480i. Any comments?

In any case, great TV.

A great TV!

Weakness:

"Bait & Switch" practiced by Ultimate Electronics

I purchase the KV-36XBR400 TV (Manufactured August 2000) yesterday (June 2001) and I am Very Impressed. I've never seen anything that can compare to the quality of this television. It's awesome, as they say, in the vernacular. My problem is with ULTIMATE ELECTRONICS, where I purchased the TV. I got about $400 off on the KV-36XBR400 for taking the "Opened Box" model, after having been shown a used KV-36XBR450 model. The salesman, Paul, at the ULTIMATE ELECTRONICS store had shown me 2 of the 400 models. They had cosmetic damage - scratches, slightly deformed speaker grill, dusty, etc. I did not want those. He said that he had another "Opened Box" unit, and I purchased that one. When the TV arrived, it was the used floor model, no box open or otherwise. No warranty papers, just the black remote control (no batteries) but I did get a manual. The speaker grill was deformed and bent at the top and bottom. I intend to call the salesman, Paul, who may have switched the units inadvertently. The asking price was $500 - I ended up paying $2150. Perhaps this is a case of "BAIT & SWITCH", perhaps not. I will call ULTIMATE tomorrow and try to find out.
I'll keep you posted as to what happened at my consumer
web page
The web page is not my main endeavor on the internet, but it' something I take seriously and I do mention it there if some company tries to screw me or if it is just plain careless about how it treats customers. The TV is good, ULTIMATE ELECTRONICS is a pisser, in my opinion -- so far. Stay tuned, I'll post the rest of the story at nowscape.com/suck . There is absolutely nothing I don't like about the KV-36XBR400 except for the thing I told you about.

Strength:

picture, plenty of a/v inputs

Weakness:

cable reception and weight

Well my wife and daughter was out of town for 2 weeks so I took this opportunity to shop around for a new direct view flat screen TV. the 1st one to catch my eye was the Samsung TSK3092WFX a 30" 16:9 wide screen direct view TV. And I was amazed by the picture, so I went online and found a great price of $1200 (m.s.r.p. $2000+) so I ordered one,
But after a day I was having a buyer’s remorse since I’ve always been a Sony fan...and I’m not familiar with this online company....
So I went to a local B&m store (tweeter) to see if they will be able to match this online price since they where selling this same TV. for $1999...this was when I saw the
36xbr400
And I was able to compare both TV’s side by side.
the colors were more real looking on the Sony plus they had it on sale for $1999. since they already have the new 36xbr450 out for $2499
anyway...after seeing the xbr's...I went home to cancel my
online order for the Samsung and went to check on the online price for the 36xbr400....w/c was around $1800
and if you add in the shipping (ave. $150)...tweeters price wasn't that bad at all. until I saw a post right here on audioreview that he was able to get the new 36xbr450 at tweeter for $2100. so i printed out the review and went to tweeter to see if they can match the price, in which they did. They also had a 1 yr. zero financing going on so I also signed up for that.
as I was heading home I saw another local TV store (Grant's TV & appliances) and they and they gave me a written quote of $1999 for the new 36xbr450 plus the matching xbr stand was also $50 less than tweeter ($249). so I said I was going to think about it, and I took the written quote to tweeter who was happy again to match their competitor’s price.
the next day I called Alex at Grant's T.V. and he said they really wanted my business and was willing to take another $100 off the quoted price. man it feels great when this retailers slug it out to get your business.
so my final price on the new 36xbr450 is $1899, delivered!
$249 for the new matching xbr stand (looks better than the old stand for the xbr400) already assembled and delivered!
Plus $150 for the 5 year in-home warranty, so if anything goes wrong with the TV. , i do not have to break my back to carry this sucker out...they will come to my house to service the TV.
I have had this TV. for just about a week now and I’m very happy with it, so as far as value rating I’m giving this a five star since I think, I was able to get this at a very good price.
after picking my wife at the airport, she was shocked to see our new entertainment center...
but was also impressed on the clarity and detail when we play our dvd movies.

Strength:

Picture quality, ease of menus, sleek look, number of connections

Weakness:

weight-the fact that 100% of the weight is in the front of the TV, slight color problem as described in the corners-but that is not a deal breaker.

Was very fortunate to find this floor model at Circuit City marked at $1800, talked the sales guy down to $1600, and promised him I would purchase a service contract, so I did, and total out of pocket cost was $1775. The television worked great, and with some Video Essentials calibration, it is up to speed. Direct TV picture is wonderful, and DVD with component hook ups is even better. Once calibrated, the picture is the real reason you buy the set.

PROBLEMS ENCOUNTERED-my speaker grills are fine, so the only real problem is the slight color blob spoken often here in the lower corner of the screen, but I only notice it when I am watching hockey, and I would attribute it to the earth's magnetic field and polarity rather than a product defect. I am sure if I paid some tech to come in a and put magnets here and there, it would go away, but a set with a picture as true as this is bound to be sensitive, so I just am able to deal with it...NOT A BIG PROBLEM

Had been eyeballing it for quite sometime, and glad I was able to get this unit at such a good price.
