Strength:

Picture, flat screen, overall appearance.

Weakness:

weight, what everybody is complaining about and they are correct. You need a crane to lift. Depth, speakers & expensive for a 36".

I've been looking for a new Television for about 6 months. Decidided an HDTV ready set was really what I wanted. After owning a 50" Mitsubishi for 8 years, concluded that few sets beat the "ole" tube - yeah, Plasma is nice, but still too pricy. After reading all the reviews, I decided to go look at the XBR. You folks were right, the picture from a DVD source is the absolute best picture I have ever seen from any source - including the Plasma. I had to buy it.. the price was a stretch, but I have the best of both worlds. An awsome set, and when HDTV becomes more available, I'm ready. I must admit, the set does need to be calibrated. I just purchased video essentials and will adjust when it arrives. The red is a little too strong, but that's okay it can be tweaked. Let's put it this way, buy this set, plug a DVD in, sit back and I guarantee you will say "wow, unbelievable".

Strength:

Clarity

Weakness:

Weight--need 2 people to move it
Price--expensive for a 36'' TV

This is the greatest TV I have ever owned! Contrary to other reviews, I have had absolutely no problems with it.
This TV looks incredible whan hooked up to my Toshiba DVD player. It is almost worth the price just to watch DVD's on(almost--I'm not that rich yet).
I was very worried with how the picture would be when hooked up with my DirecTV receiver after reading some reviews that complained about digital artifacts and other problems. It looks great! I'm am soooo happy that I just went ahead and bought this TV and didnt give in to doubt.
This TV even makes the signal from my roof antenna look great.
Couldnt afford the HDTV receiver yet, so I'll have to update when I get that in a few months.
I recently moved into a small house and couldnt fit a Big Screen TV in my living room. The XBR 400 fit perfectly into my entertainment center (although I nearly had a problem with the depth--its deeper than most TV's).
The sound on this TV is pretty good as well. I'm running everything through my receiver so I dont use the speakers on the TV at all, but I did have an opportunity to listen to them when I first hooked thge TV up and they sound better than a lot of the AV receiver and speaker sets that have been flooding the market lately.
I highly reccommend this TV. It has renewed my love for television!

Strength:

Picture, Wide Screen Mode

Weakness:

Too Heavy to move far!

Amazing! Crisp Clean Picture. I can't comment on the audio since I have never heard it. I have it as a center piece in a HT. When HDTV is more available, I'll move to a 16:9 format set. But in the meantime, the set is great for a widescreen DVD. Expensive but nothing in the price range can compare.

I'm very excited to be getting the XBR! Can someone help me determine the best way to hook up my equipment? I have the following:

Sony KV-36XBR400 (will have this soon)
Sony STR-DE935 receiver
Sony DVP-C650D DVD player (w/ optical cable that goes to rcvr)
Toshiba VCR
Sony SA-VE705 surround speakers

I'm trying to figure this out before the XBR is delivered. Should I bother w/ the S-Links between the Sony components? Thanks! Darren (dboihem@home.com)

Strength:

Nothing less than amazing HDTV picture.

Weakness:

Heavy and crappy sounding speakers.

I have had this TV for six months now and it is the best
TV that I have ever had or seen, bar none. But i believe
that mainly comes from using the RCA HDTV satellite
receiver. I have never seen a clearer live picture than
what i saw during the superbowl and the nfc championship.
If you are a huge sports fan, this is the TV for you.
With a good sound system it feels as if you are at
the game. The only weakness this tv has is its
speakers, pure crap. But if you buy a TV of this quality,
are you really going to use the speakers on the set?
Probably not.

Strength:

Flat screen. Adjustable video settings.

Weakness:

Weight.

I too, have noticed a geometry problem w/ this set. When dvd's are viewed in "widescreen" there is a shift in the screen size to one side. Although, I ignore this(and adjust it w/ the geometry correction setting)I, tonight have noticed color variations in the upper right corner of the screen. As a video FX editor, monitors w/ this problem usually are "degaussed," and everything is right again. I hope there are similar adjustments to this monitor. Or else it's back to Sony.

To All I would say. Given the fact that your wife mat not like a hulking TV in the room. You'd be better off buying a 5000.00 flat screen. The math: 2000.00 TV 2500.00-3500+ video cabinet, equals 5000+ plasma screen.

Strength:

Excellent Color

Weakness:

Picture is fuzzy on sporting events with Dishplayer feed

I bought this TV in early December. It took 3 people to haul it my to my second floor and set it on its stand - it is heavy - it should have had handles somewhere. I was not content with the color settings so I bought the Video Essentials and calibrated the video settings. Even so I was displeased with the picture when watching sporting events. In watching basketball, when the players were in motion some times their jersey numbers or faces would go out of focus or fuzzy. Otherwise the picture is perfect in DVD or satellite movies where there is excessive motion. I have a Dish network Dishplayer which is one that similar to TiVo. After several visits from the Sony tech and changing 2 pc boards, the picture could not be improved. At this point, I questioned whether it was my Dishplayer. I had cable reinstalled and found out that all of the distortion was being caused by the Dishplayer. It is my understanding from viewing both the cable and the satellite on the split screens, that the live feed is recorded on to the Dishplayer hard disk and then replayed back to the TV. There is some interference or playback problem that causes the picture to become fuzzy on motion events. Even though the picture is of lesser quality on cable, I dont experience the video problems described. Our cable company offers some digital TV channels and the picture is excellent. I was disappointed the "universal remote" did not include program codes for the Echostar Dishplayer. This TV has a lot of inputs to accomodate video sources. I am not all impressed with the audio and would have like to see a feature where the TV speakers could be used as the center channel for a 5.1 dolby digital setup. All in all, I am pleased with this product.

i had the sony 36" KV XBR 400 delivered yesterday. i was really happy with my purchase, although i don't think it's worth 2400 bucks!

a couple of things i wanted to ask the other people who have this TV. Did you find that the left/right picture (horizontal)was a bit uneven? the picture is a little bit far to the left. (maybe 1/2 to 1 inch) this bothers me because, on ESPN and other channels, some of the graphics hang off the edge and aren't visible. and those annoying channel banners in the lower right hand corner are really far out now!

i know you can adjust the tilt, but you can't adjust the left/right. odd they included the ability to tweak tilt but not horizontal!

so i called the store, and they acted like i am some sort of psycho. someone is suppose to call and arrange to come out to callibrate it. hey, if i pay this much, i want it to be perfect!

i was also wondering how sports look on this? i have noticed when things move fast, picture becomes a bit blurry around the moving object. i am using the "standard" setting. vivid seems to make faces too bright!

since i like sports so much, would i have been better off choosing the Sony KV-36FV16???

Strength:

Awesome picture quality DVD, SAT, even VCR as source

Weakness:

Signal source must be clean!!! Digital cable hit or miss. Had to switch over to DirectV. Best thing I ever did.

Well I had narrowed it down to two and bought the Toshiba. Got it home hooked it up and within a day had them take it back and got the Sony instead plus $1,100 back.

At first I was disapointed because of the factory settings. Once I got it all reset I realized that this set gave me a wonderfull crystal clear picture. Of course the signal has everything to do with it.

DVD(non Progressive Scan)is awesome. I will upgrade later.

VCR (non SVHS) is fine. Some tapes are not so good due to they are probably worn out. Will replace with DVD's as time goes by.

AT&T digital Cable. Well somedays it was good on some channels, other days not so good. This TV really inhances a bad signal. Not for the faint of heart.

I hooked up my friends DirecTV system to it and within 2 weeks had my own Sat system and promptly returned the digital cable box back to the cable office. I still use the basic Cable for the other set's in my house and on the Sony's Aux ant.

On the main Ant. I hooked up my roof-top antenna and am pleased with the results. I will eventually get an HDTV decoder.

Very happy now.

DVD PLAYBACK/ CABLE/ Lots of inputs/ Picture quality

Weakness:

Weight

Don't worrie about the picture quality when watching cable. If your cable is good, then so well your picture. I have no promblems with mine compaired to what others are saying. When watching DVD its stunning, I watch DVD's with my Sony S7700 and the picture is great. I also bought this tv for playing video games and it kicks ass. I have the PS2 hocked up with componient cables and its really cool. Lots of inputs which is really great. Also lots of different settings to play with.

I must say this is the best TV I have ever owned and the most expensive, but well worth it. I would recomend this tv to anyone.
