Strength:
Decent features, styling, good picture.
Weakness:
Looked terrible with my weak signal whereas other tv's looked better. Popping sound when turining the tv is not good for sleeping wife. I had the FS100 24" in the bedroom and was generally satisfied except that it didn't have component connections and the 3D sound effect didn't really seem to work. I got the itch to get a new tv that had better sound and the component connections but didn't want bigger than 24". I figured I could use the FS100 in our guest room so I bought the Toshiba 24" for around $300 and it had a problem with the sound so I took it back. I started thinking that I was basically pleased with the Sony and the V Series (the guys at Tweeter claim) is about as good as you can do analog set-wise. I bought the FS300 and was initially excited about the upgraded features over the FS100 and also the improved styling. Well, my bedroom has a weak cable signal and for some reason, the FS300 amplified the flaws in the signal to the point that I was never really satisfied with the picture. For some reason I was able to get better results with the FS100. The audio WOW feature adds a little more atmosphere but you grow tired of it quickly. I don't want to discourage others from buying this tv because I have a weak signal, the Sony has a great tube and you can tell that in terms of vividness and color saturation it is definately a good picture. However, the only thing is that the Toshibas and Panasonics are perfectly good pictures too and for a little less, in fact, we have a 20" flat screen Toshiba which I tried in the bedroom and it worked fantastic, even with the signal issue. Overall, I think the Sony is not the best value, the weight is not a benefit to me like you would look for weight characteristics in a receiver or dvd player indicating that it is well-built, for a tv, it is just a hinderance to carry it. I decided to go with a 27" HDTV Philips which has a line doubler and makes a big difference with the weak signal. The FS100 is a good set and works well in the spare room. I also never liked the popping sound (on all Sonys) when turning the TV on (de-gauhzing), if you are watching TV late at night and your wife is sleeping and you accidently turn the tv off and have to turn it back on, the popping sound will snap her out of her sleep and she will insist you shut the tv down for the night, no tv should do that to you. The FS300 went back to Tweeter. Similar Products Used: Sony KVFS200, Toshiba 20" & 24" |

Strength:
~ Good picture, ample adjustments. ~ Menu system is easy to navigate.
Weakness:
~ Sound for the extra $. ~ Not the best-looking cabinet. I like the Panasonic Tau and JVC l'Art series' better. Bought this as an "open box" item at CC, but it was in perfect condition with the manual & remote. Very good picture, sound is OK, but not worth paying $50. more over the price of the KV20FS100. IMO, all that the WoW does is add some tubby-sounding lows, and makes the vocals sound pushed back in the mix. The 'FV300 and 'FS100 are the same TV's otherwise, except for the WoW/BBE sound scheme and the different case. But I bought the 'FV300 because it's slightly less wide than the 'FS100 to fit in a tight area. The BBE option on the Panasonic Tau series seems to be much better implemented, or maybe the Tau's have better speakers.(?) But I wasn't as happy with the faults in the picture with the Tau's, although the Tau's have better clarity than the Sony's. Strength:
Great picture out of the box, although you could probably improve it with tweaking, good sound, plenty of inputs including component video for DVD AND S-Video for satellite receiver. Make sure your TV comes with both.
Weakness:
Heavy. Ours is sitting on top of a high dresser and it was a pain to get it up there. I'm reviewing the 24" version of the FV300. Usually $450 but $400 with 10% off at Sears during sale. Terrific picture, needs almost no adjustment but plenty of settings available, good sound and plenty of input options for DVD, satellite, etc. First tried a Philips 24" flat screen which was actually quite good, but decided to compare against the Sony and the Sony picture was streets better. Plain but good remote. The Tv looks stylish as well. I am not a "Sony bigot" and almost prefer NOT to buy one, but this was a good decision. Have not tried DVD yet but the DirecTV picture is very good - vibrant but natural colors. An excellent pick. We wanted to replace our old 19" Mitsubishi TV in the bedroom and this 24" model fits in the same space. Big improvement over going with the 20". Similar Products Used: Philips 24RF50S. Pretty good but exchanged it after three weeks for this Sony. |
