Strength:

Nice tube, good looking TV, good price, 3 video inputs

Weakness:

Poor picture, dull picture, dark picture

No matter what you do on this TV you can NEVER get the brightness and contrast to get you a good crisp picture. The sound is good and it's featurefull for the price. If you are going to spend the $450 then spend the extra $150 for a better model TV because this one is not very good.

Strength:

Price, features

Weakness:

picture quality

I was really upset with the amount of dot crawl that I've been getting on this set. I have digital cable, and the digital channels should look good, but on finer graphics that are displayed, text can be barely legible. I've altered the settings, but I can't get rid of the dot crawl completely. I can't complain too much, though, it was only $450, but I think I should have gotten the 24 inch Wega for another $200. Sound is okay for a tv set, the menu over responds to the cursor movement.

Strength:

Excellent picture and sound

Weakness:

None

This is the first sony I have owned and I am very happy with the purchass. I don't know why so many people are hung up over the start up noise of sonys. It is just the degauss system to reduce static that other companies don't have. My set had near perfect picture adjustment straight out of the box. The speakers on the kv27v42 seam much better than the kv27s42 and the benefits of the v42 are worth spending the extra $40 - $50. I matched this set up with a sony dvd to get the benefits of corresponding remotes and it was well worth it.

Strength:

Attractive TV, Great picture quality, Flat vertical picture, nice sound when set to Simulated Stereo, Control buttons located on top of TV (no bending over required)

Weakness:

Load turn-on sound of degausser

The best overall picture quality of all the available 27" TV's. Completely flat vertical pictuer tube is a major plus over the ugly over-curved TV's such as RCA, Magnovox. Once you get used to flat screens, hard to watch on fish bowl screens (just as in computer monitors). Has nice sound, not great but why should it be? Hook up to the stereo for that. Have had NO problems in the over six months I've owned this TV. Picture is very sharp and clear, color is excellent. I will note that I hav not hooked up a DVD player, so I can't say if any problems, as mentioned in other reviews, are present.
I love having the control buttons on the TOP of the TV, and not located on the front bottom. It allows for convenient on/off of the set, and keeps my baby from messing around with the buttons (can't reach the controls). A great value for $385!!

Strength:

Great quality, and vertically flat screen & aperature grill

This TV simply has a better picture than the other brands with the more annoying fishbowl bubble screens, no matter what whizbang extra features they stuff in. For $399 at PC Richards in NY, none other competed well. As for the noise upon turning the set on, here is what Sony says, directly copied from their site:

Description:

The Television Makes A Loud Noise When It Is First Turned On.

Solution:

The loud noise produced by the television when it is first turned on is normal. This noise is part of the
televisions normal degauss cycle. The degauss cycle eliminates any static build up around the
picture tube (CRT). This helps the television reproduce uniform colors over the entire picture tube.

DEGAUSS: The earth's natural magnetism can cause unwanted magnetic fields to build up inside a
monitor or television, causing a loss of color purity. Degaussing removes these stray fields. For this
reason, Sony color televisions have an automatic degauss feature.

Since the Sony CRT has aperture grill for the best picture the degauss can cause a loud ping sound
when first turned on. This is normal. It will not harm the TV or operator.

Strength:

Nice flat screen. Excellent picture. Plenty of inputs.

Weakness:

Remote.

I like this TV a lot. Unlike some of the other reviewers below, I cannot find any faults with the picture. The colors are vibrant and to me, the picture is as sharp as the Panasonics I compared it to. The front A/V input is handy and the little door is cool. The sound is surprisingly good out of the TV, however, I did hook it up to my stereo. DVD and Sat. look great through s-video. The remote is just a rectangular box, but it is not difficult for me to hold or operate. All in all, I am more than satisfied with this set.

Strength:

attractive cabinet, nice soft image, decent sound

Weakness:

lower tilt in the image, cabinet rattles with low-frequency sound

I want to like this TV, but the problems are rather
annoying. As other reviewers here have noted, there's
a trapezoid problem that is apparantly hereditary.
The lower part of the screen isn't level, off by a
half-inch to an inch. I had the 27S42 model, which
had the same problem. The demos in the store also
have this problem.

Also the sound system is pretty decent except a terrible
rattling of the cabinet when low-frequency sounds are
played. It's distracting when you're watching a
DVD or video.

Also I have a lot of trouble getting skin tones to
look reasonable using the various available adjustments.
Possibly the service menu options can fix this but
I don't want to mess with it.

I've tried various secret service menu options to try
to fix the tilt problem, but with no luck. I will probably
return this TV and buy a JVC D-series or a Panasonic
(which have pincushion problems, oy!)

Strength:

GREAT PICTURE

Weakness:

Could use 1 more s-video

I love this tv. The picture is great. For those who think the picture is "too dull" watch a scene that takes place in a dark setting. All the high contrast tv's (just about everything else) losses all definition. This set has "shadow detail" coming out the wazu. It also does a great job on pure white-compare a snow scene-high contrast sets look good in the show room, but like a bright speaker (or high maintenance woman) not want you want to marry.
