    Strength:

As real as it gets....for the time being.

Anyone who wants to buy HD tv should go to Japan and buy one, because it's so damn CHEAP...for example, a 32" 16:9 HD
tv it's only $ 1200 US, and to ship to the US it's only $ 150 US, ....especially when it's on sale in Akihabara.

    Weakness:

The North American market should smart up and mass produce these nice HD tv toys for people like us, and bring the price down like the Japanese and the Pacific Asia. Isn't
disappointing that US has NASA that send the first man to the moon but cannot make HD tv affordable to the hard working people of the promise land of USA. Please Mr. next President....do something!

Check out Akihabara web site in Tokyo to compare prices of the HD tv...

Oh...the Prisma tv are half price in Tokyo!

live to tell .... so we can all enjoy nice toys!

    Strength:

This set probally has the best picture of the bunch.

    Weakness:

    $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$$Way to much$$$$$$$$$$$$$

If money was no object and I had not done a complete rehab of my audio system, see many of my reviews on some of my over the past year buys, I would have purchased this TV, But for the money the Panasonic does deliver a very high quality TV experence for several thousand dollars difference in price.
So I must give this very HIGH priced tube the lowly 2 star rating for price and 3 Star overall because of price and availability.
Damn, If money only grew on tree's......

I now own a Panasonic 34inch HDTV, yea, i did feel i comprised somewhat, but, for at least 2,000 bucks less it was not that much of a compromise.

    Strength:

Most life-like picture I've ever seen on
any TV, direct view or RPTV

    Weakness:

None, really--would like to have outboard tuner built-in.

I can't beleve I finally own this set--It is INCREDIBLE--Slightly disappointed in cable TV reception, but that's the fault and deficiencies of the carrier, not the 34HDW1--OTA broadcasts breathtaking, MNF
superb, Leno in hi-def also looks fabulous--DVD's look outstanding, using Sony 7700--

I bought this in Southern CA, for ALOT LESS
than many are reportedly paying as noted in the newsgroups, and mine was new in the box--

Is this set worth the money? I think that depends on what you pay for it, I got a Hell of a price, and I would say, 'expensive', yes, worth it?-definitely!!

    Strength:

16:9 format direct view HDTV STUNNING RESOLUTION & DETAIL, FLAT SCREEN

    Weakness:

    ADDICTING!!!!!

Once you've seen a HDTV broadcast on this set there is no turning back baby!!!!!Its a treat to view DVDs on the 16:9 format flat screen supertrinitron display. The resolution and clarity are truly remarkable and displayed all SMPTE TEST cards with aplomb.I considered several Rear Projection sets before deciding that I couldnt accept not having all four corners in focus or the decresed brightness and lack of rich deep blacks inevitable with nearly all RPTVs.I have had nothing but sheer VIDEO heaven in my living room since I made that decision to buy the set + HDTV decoder for $7900.You might say thats a lot of money and that you could have got a larger screen RPTV for the same price but I prefer a direct view set anyday besides my living room cabinet will not accomodate anything larger than a 36" TV.So if you are sitting no farther than 9 feet from your TV and are looking for a direvct view TV with HDTV resolution and bright picture with deep dark blacks the SONY KW 34-HD1 IS IT.

    Strength:

You don't feel like you look at an electronic screen but living things in your room. Seeing is believing. 100 Hz technolocy together with Sony's expertise has made this TV to grab at any COST considering similar specs TVs from other makes are available at almost 40 % lesser price.

    Weakness:

The remote is the weakness of this TV. Too clumsy to use and VCR controls are an unncessary addition to this remote due to remote positioning..!!

The best buy of the Millennium not to compare with Plasma vision. Makes one to forget the price tag once you switch on the TV. Yes its true.

could use one extra component video and a digital in and out for audio and a built in sub out would be nice. but we can't have it all

    buy it.

    See note in "Review Summary'

Just to augment my original review of this set on 12/17/99: I've received numerous inqueries as to where I bought my set and at what price--Fry's Electronics, So. Cal.,
Dec.'99, for $5K, cash deal--The sets were slow selling at the time and I made a cash offer--

FYI--The Sony Outlet Stores periodically get the set in as B-stock (refurbs) and
have been selling it for $4,200 plus tax,
as of mid-April--Note that the SOS do not do phone or mail orders so one would have to travel to the location to pick it up--

And, finally, there is a replacement due
around August, the HD2--Will have the tuner built-in. progressive inputs, and the new Firewire port for integration of other digital products that the HD1 lacks--

My advice--Unless you're able to get a screamin' deal on the HD1, wait for the upgrade--

CLEANEST,SHARPEST 1080i DISPLAY BY ANY SOURCE

    Weakness:

    EXTERNAL DECODER BOX

This is an update on the SONY 35" 16:9 format HDTV.THOUSANDS OF AUDITIONS AT VARIOUS STORES & AT CEDIA 1999 INDIANAPOLIS I CONCLUDE THIS IS THE BEST 1080i DISPLAY OF ANY KIND (SCREEN 32" TO 60") PERIOD.At the CEDIA exposition at Indianapolis they had a neat arrangement of HDTV displays of all kinds called the "GARDEN OF HIGH DEFINITION" all capable of displaying the same program content for easy A-B comparison and my conclusion the SONY 35KWHD-1 RULES!!!!!
I am amzed at the high quality internal line-doubler on the SONY and the stunning picture as a result!!!Sets many times its price were not as clear, vibrant or lively.I cant wait to see their new upgraded KWHD-2.
