Strength:

Few mtion artifacts upconverting 480i to 1080i

Weakness:

The Video input selector must be pressed repeately to cycle through input sources. This is slow and annoying. The channel selection process is also slow and cumbersome for surfing.

Picture quality good.
User interface can use a lot of improvement

Strength:

Awesome Impact of Picture. Three dimension in nature. Clarity and detail unsurpassed. Blows away Sony and Panasonic 34" 16X9 sets.

Weakness:

The infamous Toshiba remote that makes you cycle through the inputs rather than giving you direct access. But not that big a deal to warrant a reduced rating. Just takes an extra couple of seconds to switch from: ex., DVD to Digital Dish to TV and so forth. Would also be nice if you could hold the tv settings on the sreen for a longer period while making the adjustments. But no large manner, as once you pretty much settle in on the settings you will rarely adjust them anyway. If the settings are correct you shouldn't have to screw with this often anyway . . . too many novices engage in endless over tweaking to no end.

I originally had the Toshiba 56" Theater Wide Rear Projection set. On DVD it looked great after Imaging Science Foundation (ISF) conversion. On Direct TV that set look terrible due to "pasting" problem inherrent to Satelite TV. This is a result of all satelite TV companies ridiculous decision to offer 200+ channels filled with costly bandwidth junk channels, rather than offering a few less of just the quality channels which would result in greater bandwidth and therefore greater picture clarity.

In any event, I returned the 56" for Toshiba's Direct View 34" set. WoW !!! The pasting may still be there but this set shines with any source you feed it. It is jammed pack with the latest bleeding edge technology, which I will spare the reader with at this time. I A/B compared it too Sony and Panasonic's similar units in the store and there was no comparison. I can't wait for the release of Toshiba's DST 3000 set top HDTV decoder, which blew away all the competition at the most recent Consumer Electronic Show (CES). I previously also had a Pioner Elite 45" Rear Projection. I will never again explore rear projection until that technology truely matches direct view. I may have lost some real estate in going from the 56" to the 34" but the return gain in detail, clairty, three dimensionality and consistency of good picture with any source far outweighs the loss of size.

You can literally sit right next to this set without sign of lines. This sucker is creamy smooth! Audio quality, although I use a very high end audio system, ain't too bad. You will need a clean AC source of power and good AC filtration is recommended along with ISF conversion (looked great before conversion too).

Strength:

INCREDIBLY Sharp image - Stylish looking TV

Weakness:

Channel switching is a little slow - slight bowing seen when reading titles or credits.

This set is awesome! I have read that it has the smallest dot pitch among the consumer direct view hdtv's - which gives it a higher resolution than other tv's. I have never been able to compare side by side this tv though with the Sony or Panasonic 34 HDTV but I have heard from a few other reviews that the Toshiba is the better HDTV. I play dvd movies through a progressive scan dvd player and the image quality is superb!!! The sound quality is decent although I run most of the sound through my stereo. *** The few weaknesses on this tv are slow channel switching(not a big deal to me) and when viewing titles or credits there appears to be A VERY slight bowing or bending (like an arch) towards the botttom of the screen and an upside down arching towards the top of the screen - it is VERY SLIGHT though - it doesn't bother me and I have seen slight bowing on other flat screen direct view tv's... I think this is inherent to flat tube screens. All in all though this a great set and highly recommended!

Strength:

Picture quality better than any I have ever seen.
View from any angle without any loss of picture.

Weakness:

Slow Channel switching.

The TV is just awesome. I compared the 34 " Toshiba against Sony's and Panasonic's. I wasn't worried about any price differences in the beginning because I was focused more on getting the best box. They all have the same foot print but the Toshiba was by far the best. My comparison included me testing each box with the "Video Essentials" CD. On the Toshiba in the store and the one I now own required no adjustments what so ever for the picture quality. I didn't worry about the sound because I knew I going to hook it up to my Home Theater System. By the way, Toshiba's TV has the best price.

I too am waiting for a set top box. Toshiba's is suppose to be top quality and I will wait for it if I can stand it. I only wish I knew when they are coming out.

I give the CW34x92 only 4 stars on Value. Although for me money was not the concern. I didn't want to pay any more than I had to but, there are bigger HDTV's (if size if what you are after) for less money. The catch being that the CW34x92 has a flat tube and is not a projection unit. For an overall rating this TV rates at least a six !!!

You guys have got to be kidding me. There is no way that the Toshiba's picture is better than the Panasonic CT34WX50's. The Toshiba's picture is quite good, but if you look at the TV with it turned off, you can see that the tube isn't all that dark which means that the level of black that it can reproduce is not that deep. This will directly affect the set's contrast capability. After setting the Toshiba up for the best picture possible and doing the same with the Panasonic (I was able to do this since I work at the store), I put in a Sony WEGA DVD demo. There is a scene with close-up shots of nature including jellyfish and flowers and the Toshiba could not keep up with the Panasonic in terms of color richness or detail. While I would give the Toshiba 4 stars, the Panasonic would rate a 5.

Strength:

Great progressive scan DVD images...Good DSS images...Good audio system...4:3 images look good in Theater Wide mode...Direct View CRT is less succeptable to burn-in than RPTV...Excellent contrast...

Weakness:

Selection of input source via remote control

When my old Sony set started to go south, I decided to shop for a digital television because of the transition to HDTV taking place in this country. I was concerned about the reliability of RPTV's because of the massive amount of light those 7" CRT's have to put out to project an image to the screen. I wanted a direct view HDTV. I fell in love with the CW34X92 at first sight, and I have never regretted it. I bought a Toshiba 5109 progressive scan DVD player to go with this set, and I cannot see how high definition can get much better. I highly recommend this set.
