This is not a review yet (I'll have the TV next week and will review after the 100 hours of burn in recommended) but a correction to Jester's post below.

I just purchased the unit (CW34XC2) for $2,880.00 CDN through my local shop from Toshiba Canada. No, this is not a demo unit - $2,999.99 is the Canadian purchase price on this model and Toshiba Canada in Toronto has plenty of stock (I called them directly).

I don't know where Jester got that information about the lack of availability but it is incorrect.

Thanks, just wanted to clarify that issue.

I am forced to rate the TV to post this update so I'll rate it based on my research alone and my comparisons at a A/V retailer.

Strength:

Picture Quality, 16:9 Aspect Ratio

Weakness:

Only one minor weakness: 1-2seconds delay when changing channels

I enjoy watching DVDs with Progressive Scan - the picture is amazing not only thanks to the line doubler but the clarity of the picture. I do not have a HDTV decoder yet, but I did get a chance to see a HDTV picture on the TV in a store - it's like watching through the window. I could not believe how heavy the TV is... Overall it's a great TV and it truly impressed me and all of my friends.

By the way the TVs are in the stock in Toronto, the model # for 2001 did not change and they are a grand cheaper than in States.

First off let me say i am not reviewing this TV here. I'm reviewing under the CW34X92 since that's what it is more commonly known as. This is to help the guy like me that new nothing and came here for info, but is confused by conflicting information.

First off, the model CW34XC2 is the canadian version of the CW34X92. They are identical. There is no TW34X92 or TW34XC2 like the guy below mentioned, he's just confused. Also, he is mistaken when he says you see black bars on 4:3 mode for NTSC, you actually see GREY bars. (on a side note, you CAN change to black bars using a code and a universal remote, but that's another story)
Lastly, the reason why the CANADIAN model (CW34XC2) is now selling for $2999 instead of $3999, is because you cannot buy a NEW one in Canada. The warehouses are empty. All that's left is the 1 demo unit left in everystore. The DEMO is $2999....if you could still find a new one, it'd be $3999.

Having said this, this TV is great and will be explained under CW34X92.

Strength:

Nice size, great display

Weakness:

Grey bars in 4:3 mode

Excellent set and tremendous value now that the price has dropped by $1k in Canada. For use in a smaller room where projection sets do not have sufficient viewing angle. Without a doubt HDTV is worth it now and as more programming comes along this will be an excellent starter set for those smaller rooms. I rate it a 5 for value with the recent price drop and a 5 overall as I am very happy with this set. That being said, there is still improvements to be made in overall picture quality but I won't get tired of watching this set.

Strength:

Great 1080i displays

Weakness:

Poor display of 480i video sources

A co-worker of mine purchased this TV in Montreal for $3999 CDN. For some reason the TW34X92 for is not available in Canada, only the TW32XC2 is (I have been to every imaginable dealer). I have not been able to determine the difference between these two sets.

He only watches DVDs on this set with his Toshiba 3109
player and loves it. I have a Toshiba 5109 (Progressive DVD player) and we plan on comparing the results with his set. He doesn't have cable or even a VCR :-(

I got to play with a TW34XC2 at a local a local FutureShop store that had it hooked up to a Starchoice satellite system + HD receiver from General Instruments. HD images are great, but 4:3 NTSC images are horrible. The line
doubler cannot be by-passed and the IDSC scan conversion
that I find acceptable on the TN50X81 projection TV is simply horrible on the TW34XC2. When displaying 4:3 material you get black instead of gray bars on the side. This will badly burn in the CRT unless you watch TV in one of the stretched theather modes.

In anyone knows what the difference between the TW34XC2
and the TW34X92 is, please let me know. Right now I am looking instead at the TW40X81, TN50X81 and Sony KP53HS-10. pascal@mlink.net
