Strength:

Large screen, colorstream component input, fair picture when ajusted, invar shadow mask.

Weakness:

If much black is displayed on screen the black turns lighter, almost greyish, terrible dot crawl patterns if sharpness is not cranked way down. Only one s-video input, more....

I have to say that despite all of the weaknesses
of this set, I'm still fairly pleased with it.It
will do until I get an HDTV set.

I have not had the "pink cloud" problem, except
when I (stupidly) placed a pair of unshielded
speakers to close to the set. Luckily this did
no noticable permanent damage.
However, I did notice a pink-ish hugh over the
entire sceen (not the blotches as stated in
other reviews) when the display was mostly white.
This was easily fixed by switching the temperature
to "cool", which makes the white in the picture
more blue than red.
The biggest problem I have with the picture is the
faded black when watching movies with alot of dark
seens and the dot crawl, it just plain sucks. Using
s-video doesn't seem to help much. I hope the
colorsteam component inputs work better. I guess
it's really worth getting a set with a 3D y/c comb
filter.

One last thing, be careful of what kind of RCA
connections you use. I used some cheap RadioShack
screwtight ones and ended up pulling out one of
my RCA inputs.
I unscrewed the cable first but it did not
spring back into an opened possition instead, it
stayed locked onto the input. This screwed up not
only my RCA input but my s-video as well. I don't
know if it harmed my component inputs because I
have not used them yet.
Hopefully, my "Best Buy" warranty will cover it.

Why they don't solder these conections and
strengthen the back pannels is beyond me. What
do they save, 50 cents?

I just had the seconf TV delivered two days ago and even though the globs of pink hue in two corners are gone, there still is this agrivating pinkish haze only on the left side of the screen. Like Matt, I watch quite a bit of hockey, and you can't help but notice that on bright white subjects, there's an uneven color tone that cannot be corrected for.

On the first set I received, the next day I placed a service call after watching the set (post two hour acclimation time) for 30 minutes. When the tech got out here, he too couldn't believe the globs of pink in the upper right and left corners. He popped the back off, did some investigation/testing and five minutes later he uttered the words: "your picture tube is shot!" . WHAT? It's brand spankin new! I'm calling another local Toshiba service center to get their input. Being the purist that I am, I just don't think I can live with this defect that seems to be inherent on these Toshibas (I guess I'm spoiled by the Proton in the living room that I've owned since '87; tough to beat). My girlfriend swears that she doesn't notice it, but I know the flaw is there.

Be aware of this when you consider this TV. Like most of you, I purchased this TV as a stop-gap until the HDTV, and the irony is, I think the Toshiba HD's have some of the best pictures available. GO FIGURE! I hope some of you find these words helpful........I'm off to investigat Sony and Proton!

Just for the record, I had not read any of the specific reviews listed on this site before I purchased this set. I found it at a local Sears store on sale for $849.00, which I thought was a great price. I took it home myself, which was a mistake due to the weight of the unit. I connected my digital cable box and Toshiba DVD player, and plugged it in.
This is where it gets interesting, because with the factory default settings, the red was way out of control, overpowering the other colors. I had to bring the color setting down from the factory default to a setting of 30, and crank the tint up to a plus 20 just to get the red down to a semi normal level. I also noticed as John, Mark, and Matt did that there was a very annoying pink cast. I also agree that this pink cast did give the picture a washed out appearance. Another issue I had with this set was that even after I adjusted it so that the red was not as intense, there was a noticeable area in the center of the screen that was still more red than the rest of the screen. For example, while watching a news cast where a persons face was centered on the screen, the area of the face closest to the center was more red than the portion of the face closer to the edges of the set. This may have been just a purity adjustment, but still not something you would expect on a new set. I wanted very badly for this to be just an adjustment issue, but after a few hours of struggling, and a great deal of frustration(my wife was getting a bit annoyed with me) I decided to leave it until the next day and try again. The next day, I did a search on the internet for any articles on the Toshiba, and when I found the reviews listed here and started to read them, I was amazed at how many others had a similar experience with this model. The weird thing is that when I took it back to Sears, and looked at the display model again, it was very evident that it also had similar issues, although not as severe as the one I received. Why I did not notice this when I originally looked at the sets I am not sure. I exchanged the Toshiba for a Hitachi with similar features, and the difference in the picture quality was amazing. Thanks to all those who posted reviews here for being honest and specific about their issues. It helped me to make the decision to look at a different manufacturer instead of just getting another Toshiba in hopes it was just a bad unit.
