I've had this unit for a long time but had not used it in 15 years as I am in a building that doesn't allow good reception. I just hooked it up to a Bluetooth receiver and it is once again an amazing unit with great sound. I'm glad I kept it! |

This is very honourable product of the late founder Mr C. C. Wong of Taiwan. He manaaged more than a company, he managed with depth and caring for all of his employees. His values are truly not found in todays economy where quality is a disposable accomodation for present consumers.

Hey there, I recently purchased a Proton 300 from a friend of mine for $25.00. I just thought it was kinda cool looking and I needed a radio for my bedroom. I guess nieghter of us actually knew what quality we had. Since I've owned I decided to do alittle research and find out what I have here. This little heavy box has incredible sound, the tuning knob is nice and wieghty, I now see that it can also accomodate a tape or CD player. with this sound quality that is going to be awesome. This is really a great little investment that I made on accident. I'm not a big stereo buff so I don't know what it's worth or anything I just know it's the best $25.00 I've ever spent. |

Strength:
Compact with HUGE Organic sound and plenty of power.
Weakness:
Due to age, most units will require contact cleaning. I only listen to my local Jazz and Classical radio stations and this Proton 300/301 sounds FANTASTIC to my ears (that's coming from someone whose main stereo system consists of a VTL tube amplifier, Kef 104.2 speakers, rega jupiter CD player and other serious cables/interconnects).

Strength:
Great sound.
Weakness:
Antenna is hardwired to the inside so not easy to substitute. I've never seen this radio before but was in the market for a table radio for the kitchen. I was considering getting a Tivoli. Saw this radio on the $10(CDN)table at a garage sale and asked to check if it worked. This box sure was heavy. It sounded great...even outside. It pulled in the stations I wanted. So I bought it and hauled it home. Similar Products Used: Modded Magnum Dynalab FT-11. |

An absolutely "Superb" Tuner... the best I've ever encountered. An overall EXCELLENT design! TOP QUALITY compopnents thruout! At 100 watts each, the radio and the matching 301 speaker are truly mind boggling for a table radio... as they best many high end stereos. This product truly needs it's own catagory!
Weakness:
NONE... other than trying to get "truly competent service" on a unit of this vintage and quality (if you ever need it). This is my 2nd favorite possession... very close behind my dog (a Boxer). I lusted after one of these radios back in the 80's... but like many things in life didn't move quick enough. Well I bit the bullet and bought one off of eBay and cannot possibly share with you how impressed I am with this Proton. Even better than I remembered! I have the radio & the speaker on a bookshelf about 6' apart. Yes, the shelf is "stout"! NOTE*** I'm feeding the two rear RCA imputs on the radio w/a 4' Monster Cable adapter with a 1/8" headphone jack on the other end. The headphone jack in plugged into a new MAC MINI computer! The computer is mounted vertically amid the books between the Proton speakers. I now listen to iTunes & internet radio with the Proton. THERE IS NO BETTER speaker system for a computer... Period! As to AM - FM reception here in NW San Antonio... I get about 32 FM stations and all the damn AM stations from south of the border... nothing new about that. Anyone considering a table radio MUST do themselves justice and "get a Proton 300". It is the BEST $350.00 I've ever spent! Nothing today including the hyper hyped Bose... is anywhere close in design, quality, and performance! This is the definitive Table Radio Standard! Small size Big BIG sound (rated @ 100W per channel)
Weakness:
Ummmmm.....hmmmmmm...none. Yep, that's right....$20. I paid $20 for this gem at a yard sale here in Plano, TX. I Imagine my surprise when I got it home and plugged it in!! Man !! I was fortunate enough to get both the 300 radio and the 301 extra speaker. I would not sell this for $500 right now. I am so impressed. If you see something like this at a garage sale, make sure it works then pick it up (if your a weight lifter) and take it home. You will not be disapointed. SOUND is a 10! Looks a 10! S-O-L-I-D Knobs feel so great. Love the green display and the amber STEREO indicator.
Weakness:
Short in selector switch. HEAVY (but then that may be because it's a quality unit) Being in radio for almost thirty years, I've come to embrace all forms of music. I am also a bit on the "gotta have the best for my money" side when it comes to making a purchase for anything. Recently I'd been searching for the perfect minisystem (sometimes referred to as a bookshelf system) at area stores and online. The dimensions of my bookshelf limited my options to a particular sized minisystem. It came down to two units: The SONY CMT CP101 and the classy YAMAHA (don't remember model, but lists at $399) AM/FM with one cd player and black speakers. I was still disappointed with the sound these units provided me. Once you have the best, your search is never ending until you find it again...I never did. The closest I came was the TIVOLI RADIO with the extra speaker, separate cd player and separate bass speaker (retails for about $439 altogether). Better sound than I've heard on ANY minisystem currently on the market. That's what I'd buy today if I didn't still have my PROTON. Then it hit me...my old PROTON 300/301 in the basement collecting dust and forgotten because of a short in the AM/FM/TAPE switch. I took it apart; only to put it back together because I didn't know what I was doing. I decided to install it SIDEWAYS in my bookshelf...it fits and sounds better than ANYTHING I WILL EVER FIND TODAY. I can deal with the annoying short in the switch...just a little jiggle. Now I need to find a small cd player and I'm happy. Too bad they don't make this anymore. It's a keeper! Strength:
For its size and age it still impresses people. At the present it's my gerage stereo system coupled with a panasonic portable cd player.
Weakness:
Only one would like to have seen it in a larger systemie: bigger spr. I bought the Proton 300 & the 301 extra speaker new around 1981, can't remember where! "The Radio" as it was called has been my baby all these years. My home system is very extensive, KEF spk front center and rear, NAD amplifiers, Denon DVD, CD, Processor on and on. The 300 still has a wonderfull sound and I'll never sell it. Similar Products Used: Many however none as great. |
