Strength:

S-Video Inputs, Plenty of Power, Dolby Digital and DTS, A & B speakers, Banana speaker inputs

Weakness:

What else, the remote. Could have additional input for just TV. I use this input for my Satellite.

I've been waiting for about 1 year to move up to a AV Receiver with Dolby Digital. Finally moved up from my Technics Pro Logic receiver. What a difference!! I was looking for my best value and this was it. Looked at Harmon Kardon and really liked them, but had to pay about $500.00 for similar features and they did not have A & B speaker capabilities (this was important since we have outdoor speakers). Did not like the Onkyos due to performance problems. Looked at Yamaha too but $$$. The Denon was regularly $350, got it on sale for $299, then GoodGuys.com ran a weekend 10% discount with free shipping and NO TAX!!! I stole this for $261.00 which made my wife very happy. Finally my DVD's have the surround sound that I have craved for a long time. The Bose speakers have never sounded better. Now I hear my wife telling me to turn it down, but it sounds soooooooo nice. Treated myself to the T2 special edition DVD and the bullets were flying...wow! The gun battle in the movie Heat had me ducking for cover.
The only real problem, as alot of people have stated, is the remote. It seems to have alot of capabilities but the buttons are very small and awkward and when the lights are turned down during movie viewing it is difficult to see. Additionally, it could use 1 more standard input. Overall though I am driving my wife crazy learning all of the bells and whistles that this baby has. Took me little while to set all of the different settings up but the manual is pretty user friendly. I especially like the 5 speaker stereo setting when playing CD's. The room is literally filled with music. For the money, this has got to be the best AV Receiver out there. Unless you want to pay over $500 for a similar unit, try this one out, you will not be disappointed.

Strength:

Price is very cheap for number of consumer electronics functions. I would prefer less fun house gimics and better amp design.

Weakness:

Broke after one month of casual use. It was 32 days past the 30 day warrenty and was shipped back. My opinion is this is just a low cost unit with alot of high praise. I traded it for the Marantz SR 6200 and have been very please with it's warmer sound.

I think most entery level enthusiast are easier to please than me but the one month failure is unacceptable.

Strength:

good power, clean sound

Weakness:

difficult set-up menus, unit failed to recognize the digital input (coax),dsp modes not of much value,

After the initial setup time the unit offered good performance. The digital coax input would not recognize any input signal. Kind of frustrating.

However the Denon unit failed after 1.5 years. Denon Canada did NOT provide any warranty assistance. There was poor customer service in Canada. I could not even locate a local service centre willing to provide service for Denon. Poor indication for a city the size of Calgary (850,000).

Needless to say I am disappointed with Denon Canada. I's a tough choice to throw-away a 1.5 year old receiver. I would consider upgrading to 6.1 or 7.1 sound now, but would avoid Denon.

Strength:

Has great doldy digital decoding, great custmizing options

Weakness:

Tape monitor is bad, no that good sound fields.

Great product. The little things don't matter becuase this product is so great. A real audiophile doesn't care about sound field, they car about pure sound and decoding. So i am going to say this is a great model.

Strength:

Clean power, Good Looks, Quality, Ease of use

Weakness:

Other than the stupid slider, even the remote isn't half as bad as everyone makes it out to be

Picked up this receiver about 5 months ago and I am nothing but happy with it. It handles DVD playback extremely well and for CD music, it is very strong. When they say this receiver is clean in the sense that "What goes in is exactly what comes out" they do not lie at all. Some equipment will actually "color" the sound that it produces, but with the Denon, this is not the case. Performs like a much more expensive piece for a fraction of the cost. Setup is easy and for CD's, the 5 channel stereo fills the room beautifully. In the case of my setup, Everything is run from the computer, so inputs are not a problem at all but there are more than enough for just about any configuration imaginable. Definately recommend this for someone on a budget!

Strength:

Denon, Simple attractive styling, quality build, beautiful sound, dependable, good manual

Weakness:

Remote doesn't drive my Pioneer 535 properly, though the manual suggests it should, no S-Video switching

It was really a toss-up for me between the 1601 and the 1801 when buying this receiver 6 months ago. In the end I decided I didn't need the S-Video switching, if I had S-Video switching I'd want component video switching... I only use a DVD player anyway (VCR-free for 1 year).

The extra power of the 1801 was attractive also. Let me tell you you don't need it. 60 watts of Denon power is more than ample. I use it with DVDs and normally set it to between -25dB and -15dB (the volume range is from -60 to +18dB). Never dared to listen to it at +18, but there is only a little hum at this volume when there is no input and at +5dB the unit still sounds beautiful. And how. This receiver sounds fabulous. Note here that I have not heard that many quality receivers and am no expert. I mainly went on the advice of this website, the good people at aus.dvd and several reviews on the internet... Another thing to note here is that it has a great low end on the volume. A lot of units (not many true AV Receivers admittedly) have a narrow low range of volume. The volume gets to the normal listening area fractionally above zero. Not so the Denon. You can barely hear it at -50, it is reasonably low at -40, etc.

Some units are rumoured to have a lot of trouble with overheating (note hearsay only!!!!). I keep this one in a closed cabinet with 12cm of headspace and it gets warm but not hot and certainly doesn't stop. The Denon doesn't suffer from it at least..

A little annoyed at the remote. Not backlit but you can't really expect that. It should be great but for some reason the Pioneer DVD player program in it doesn't work with my 535. That and an AV select button for the TV section of the remote would make this a great remote and would allow me to virtually chuck my TV and DVD remotes... Still it may work great for your DVD or CD player.

Plenty of inputs on the back, and it will switch composite video devices nicely. Shame about no S-Video, but hey..

Top value for the AU$650 I paid last year. I will be very seriously considering other Denon gear in future. It doesn't have bells or whistles like switching of other components or 7.1 channel sound, but is a terrific entry level DD/dts receiver.

Remote (yes it is indeed a crappy one), Could use a little more power

I got this reviver mainly because my yamaha's volume control stoped working by remote (yeah I know I'm a litttle lazy :D).
I've gotten both the yamaha and denon from the nice folks at Tweeter, and both times they hooked me up with killer recivers!

Now let me tell you my first thoughts about the denon, I was able to take it out of the box and have a look at it in the store since it was the last one left. So I opened the manual up and had a look at the specs, I thought to myself when I saw 60watts that just wouldn't be enough power (more later). so I decided to take it home being such a great price ($180).

As soon as I got home I opened the box up and had it hooked up in no time, it was great to finilly be able to set the main's and surround speakers to be small and let my sub take over the lows.

I have seem to have foud the breaking point of the amp at about +03 or +05 depending on what type of misic is being played. however at the volume it is VERY LOUD. the people below me don't like it when I have it up that loud >:}
you know, I forgot to add how good it sounds, well it sounds GREAT I hear more out of my music then I ever have before!!!

this reciver has made me a BIG DENON fan, it will be denon from now on!

FIVE STARS ALL THE WAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Strength:

Tone Defeat, Denon

Weakness:

DSP's

This is a followup on my last review. This receiver is absolutly amazing when you put on the Tone Defeat. The DSP's are useless as h*ll and thwart the sound completly.
The 1601 produces the most wonderful lows with the Tone Defeat, the sound is so clean, I fall in love with my Denon everyday, over and over again.
