From using a Sony receiver to the Denon, I noticed a huge difference. Now I can crank up the sound and listen to the clean and powerful sound. Especially now with the DTS DVD's comming out, I see a big difference.

Strength:

lack of hiss in stereo mode. price. specs.6 channel inputs

Weakness:

hiss in 5-ch stereo. less bass than I like

I bought this receiver after auditioning Yamaha, H/K, and Marantz. I finally purchased it because the cost was alot lower than the other receivers I listened to (it was off the shelf but apparantly never hooked up). Second to price, my main criteria were hiss and bass, with hiss having a little more importance. I compared a comparably priced yamaha. I didn't look at the yamaha model number but the salesman at both places I went to stated that it was comparably priced to the Denon avr1800. The yamaha had more hiss. However, after buying the denon, I found that in 5ch-stereo it has almost as much hiss as the yamaha does in DSP mode. I thought the DSP mode in the denon was quieter than the yamaha. This was a little disappointment as I had heard the 5ch stereo mode was great. But I'd like a litle less noise. I wonder if the salesmen had me unknowingly comparing the denon's stereo mode with the yamahas DSP mode in terms of hiss. Also the bass with the loudness switch on my old Kenwood was louder than on the denon. Otherwise, after reading the reviews of this receiver on this site and the reviews of other receivers, I feel I didn't do too badly. I'm thinking that if I am really concerned about hiss and bass, I should have gone with stereo separates and forget about hometheater.

Strength:

Clarity (finally!), great value, not too much bass

Weakness:

hum when i use the digital coax

I am very pleased with the not too bright not too warm sound of this receiver. The sony i had put out too much bass (problem solved). I have it connected to a Sony ES cd player and a MD recorder. For dvd it is hooked up digital coax to my computer which creates a loud hum but it still puts out quality audio.

Strength:

Sound is excellent, binding posts for *all* channels, no background noise

Weakness:

volume display is tiny, selecting sources with the knob sucks,

Well....apparently I'm the first one to post a review here somehow. Anyway, to make a long story somewhat short, I purchased an Onkyo 575 a few months (2) ago from Yawa Audio/Video. I was extremely happy with it (you can read my review for it)....BUT...it started to get that dreaded hissing sound. I checked my set-up more times than I care to mention, and finally came to the conclusion that it was the receiver causing the problem, not my set-up. Now this wasn't a particularly loud hiss (it was constant no matter what the volume setting was) but it was quite noticeable at low volumes, especially at night when I listen to music when I go to bed. Now, I paid $400+ for this receiver, and I expect it to work properly...

I finally decided that I was going to call Yawa Audio/Video and see what I could do (it had been 2 months to this point). I had heard about their excellent customer service (that's why I bought it from them in the 1st place, but never really thought I'd have to use it) but was not expecting too much, considering that it had already been 2 months, and the "trial" period is a month. I e-mailed Yawa, and told them what the problem was, and within a few hours, I had a response telling me that I could either exchange my receiver for another Onkyo, or I could "upgrade" to the Denon 1800 for another $70.00.

Rather than have to deal w/ another bad Onkyo (I loved it other than the hiss), I opted for the Denon. Good choice on my part. Yawa shipped out the Denon that day, and I shipped the Onkyo back to them after the Denon arrived....I can't possibly say enough about the excellent service I received from them, and will buy from them again next time! (highly recommended)

Anyway, on to the Denon...I really like it a lot...yeah, there's a couple of things that I don't like (that were better on the Onkyo), but on the whole, this is definitely a better receiver, but then again, it is almost $100 more. Of courese, the 1st thing I was interested in was whether or not there would be a hiss....sure enough, no hiss whatsoever, even at the lowest volume setting (-60). Then, I put it through it's paces a bit....2nd thing that impressed me about this guy was that the sound was considerably better than the Onkyo....can't put my finger on anything exactly, but it just sounded much warmer than the Onkyo. Oh--I almost forgot...the bass output on the Onkyo is pretty miserable....I had to have the bass knob turned up just about most of the way to get some bass out of Infinity Studio Monitor speakers....I thought it was just the speakers, but after getting the Denon running, I realize that it was the receiver.

OK...I'm starting to ramble...I will post a follow up review in a few weeks, after I use it some more (haven't even tried Dolby Digital yet). But, I just wanted to let you all know that this is a fantastic receiver (so was the Onkyo, but the hissing really pissed me off). Glad I made the switch to the Denon....if you're considering buying an Onkyo 575, or some other receiver in the

Quality and value

I purchased a complete set of equipment (Denon AVR1800, B&W DM302, 305,CC3, ASW 1000 and Toshiba SD4109x)

My comments here are related to Denon AVR 1800. I have initially looked at SONY receivers (STR DA935 and ES 555) and was scared off by those bad reviews (hissing sound, distortion and excessive heat etc). Tested the Denon and love it. I considered the AVR 2800 but settled on the 1800. I agree with other reviewers that the 1800 offer much better value without giving up functionality. I save the difference in the cost and bought a bigger Sub, which offers a more tangible benefit to me. The manual is not great but passable. The remote control is passable as well.

Included in the package is the Monster Cables (Ca$400) and setup. A bit expensive but saved me time to figure out what to do. I listen to 60% music and 40% DVD. This unit gives me plenty of power in my 25x20 family room. There is no distortion at any level. I usually set the volume to 40-60% power level. At 80%, one can feel the air moving around us.

I read a lot from the Audioreview and tested the equipments before buying. It is a great match with the B&W speakers. A great value for my money.

Great Sound, powerful

Weakness:

Have'nt found any at this price

Bought this receiver to replace my old Marantz Pro-Logic. I have to say that this is one of the best value receivers ever. I am used to listening to high quality 2 channel audio and I have absolutely no complaints about this one at this price range. It sounds clear with all types of music and movies and it drives my little NSMs quite well considering that the speakers are very inefficient (about 82db @ 1 watt). Don't quite like the remote though, but this is minor. Highly recommended.

Lots of inputs
Great sound
Good setup options

Weakness:

Remote programmable only half way - how frustrating
Can't adjust all settings on remote
No S-video out (They offer it coming in...)

My family recently bought this receiver and the Denon DVD 2500 at a very good price. I had no real dealings with the buying of it but I sure have done a lot to set up up and a lot of listening. I am newish to this whole game but am learning in leaps and bounds.

This receiver is fantastic. It simply offers everything at a great price. The decoding seems to be great with true and distinct sound production. We have not yet bought a subwoofer but our Dali speakers (never heard of them meself) manage quite well - with some great output from the receiver. It can be customised quite well. I suppose for a budget receiver, asking for more than a simple monitor out is too much but an s-video out would have been great as well as on screen seting up. Am I asking too much? Dunno.

It produces very little noise. Turning the volume knob all the way up produces a totally excusable rather soft hiss...

The question I think one needs to ask when buying this equipment is, "What is good enough?" Sure, you can upgrade and upgrade but eventually there are diminishing returns. I can't see how this machine would not be good enough for most people. It produces great sound, great volume and can do it all. I am a bit frustrated by the remote and that stopped me giving it 5 stars...

If I had the choice though (I didn't) I would probably go for the Onkyo 575 - based on what I have heard.

Can I recommend it? Wholeheartedly! You won't be disappointed.

Strength:

Excellent DD/DTS decoder, musical, detailed sound, 5-channel stereo mode, great bang for the buck.

Weakness:

Sounds a little flat and harsh when pushed, bass response is not great, murky manual and confusing remote.

I own a Harman Kardon PT2500 pre-amp with a PA5800 amp. I wanted to upgrade to a DD/DTS pre-amp (liked the sound of the PA5800), but just couldn’t find anything in my price range that seemed a good value. So, with some reluctance about giving up the flexibility of separates, decided to buy this receiver, primarily on the basis of the reviews at this site.

The amplifier section is as close to silent as I have heard in this price range, and is more detailed and musical than the HK PA-5800. It offers more music at lower volume with good clarity, especially using the coax and optical connections. It does not have the dynamic response or the great bass of the HK at high volume. The sound begins to get a little flat and harsh (even though it’s rated at only 5 watts per channel less than the HK (75 versus 80) so (to my ears anyway) there is some truth about the benefits of 'high amperage' claimed by HK.

Simply stated, the Denon is adept at classical music / jazz / moderate volume, and the HK more suited to Rock ‘n Roll / Dolby Digital / DTS duties.

The 5-channel stereo section is nice, but it will expose any shortcomings in your surround speakers. I’m using Sound Dynamics RTS P100s for the fronts but the SD RTS-RS1s rear surrounds didn’t handle the load very well. Changed to RTS-3s, which are much better suited to a fuller load. The digital sound fields don’t do a lot for me, the effect is rarely worth the loss in clarity. My favorite is Matrix, which gives a nice illusion of space.

The Dolby Digital decoder is superior to the one that came with my Toshiba 3109. DTS sounds very good to me, but I haven’t anything else to compare it to. The tuner section is just okay, which is pretty much the norm for under $1,000 receivers these days.

The manual is not terribly clear, and the remote is not very intuitive. Be prepared to spend some time figuring out how everything works, but trust me, it’s worth it.

If this receiver has a weakness, it is performance at high volume, so a few more watts per channel might help. I nearly traded up for an AVR-3300, but finally plugged in my PA-5800 for the front and center channels and got back some of what I was missing. You make some compromises and give up flexibility going with a receiver over separates, but you can’t beat the value. This AVR-1800 is a bargain given its tremendous versatility, great DD/DTS decoder, and the virtually silent and musical pre-amp and amplifier section.

Everything, the sound quality, the dolby digital is awesome. I actually like the remote, besides the fact that its not backlit.(but i do have the 2000 model remote)

Weakness:

No svideo, thats it.

This is a beautiful reciever. The 75x5 is louder than i will ever need, but thats not really the high point of this reciever. The sound quality is outstanding. Every sound, movies or music is crisp and clear, and even better at high volumes. Its just amazing on the dolby digital, i've actually never heard dolby digital in home theater before this reciever, but my ears tell me that it performs flawlessly and the sound is wonderful. The scene in the matrix when neo and that chick storm in that building with the swat team coming out is so good, i just rewatch that scene over and over, not for the action, but for the sound, its great. Right now it drives DCM-12series 2. They sound really nice with the Denon, i plan on buying 5 mini monitors, ANY SUGGESTIONS in the $250-$350 price range for fronts??? I suggest you look around and find a good price on this reciever, i got it for $335(shipping included) brand new from ebay. For that price it is a awesome deal for the quality you get. Love the Denon, i'll be back to Denon when i get a little bit more cash.
