Strength:

Beautiful sound, refined, strong depht, huge soundstage, neutrality within a very nice musicality, great bass output, powerful, clean and professionnal look.

Weakness:

Quite confusing remote control, no S-Video, no direct mode

I am very satisfied with this receiver.

It answers to my principal needs without being forced to
give an enormous amount of money for being at the eyes of
some of my (supposed Audiophiles) friends who have spent a
couple of grands in saying that in acting like that they
sincerely hear a much better sound than my system.

Some persons seem to forget that the most important things
is what you really hear, perceive; not what you think that
you posses in spending a lot of mony that may be unecessary.

My personnal av system is composed by the following elements:

Denon avr-1800
Energy C4's as front and rear speakers
Definitive Technology C1 as center speaker
Yamaha CDC-745 cd player
Sennheiser HD-250 linear headphones
Toshiba M-752 vcr

DENON AVR-1800 is a very nice component. His sound is excellent in all modes. DTS is super!!! I compare it with DENON 525R stereo amp and I must tell, that sound of DENON AVR-1800 is more punctual (excuse my english). I love it!!!

User manual

Denon makes an absolutely great product with their AVR-1800. Denon's upper level products have additional features (more inputs, outputs, etc.), but I am sure that the sound quality of the 1800 measures up to the sound quality of the more expensive models. I did a lot of shopping around before I purchased my equipment. For receivers, I carefully considered Sherwood, Yamaha, and Denon. I felt Denon offered as close as a match to my needs for inputs, outputs, easy to use remote, etc. The Sherwoods and Yamahas are nice products, I am sure I would have been happy with one of those, but I am confident you won't be disappointed with an 1800.

For those of you out there that still think Sony makes good receivers, please educate yourself before you buy. Don't buy it because it has a neat little remote that looks like a cell phone...listen to the music that it reproduces and pay less attention to the gadgets and gizmos and more attention to the quality of the music reproduction. Can you hear the clarity in the highs? Do you feel the rumble of the percussion section? Can you feel the bow across the violin's strings? How about the finger picking of the strings on your favorite guitar piece? When a vocalist sings can you hear the subtlety in their breathing and voicing? There really is a difference in receivers...so go out and listen!

Strength:

Fantastic sound quality.

Weakness:

Not enough power for a large sized room. Remote difficult to read.

I originally purchased a Sony STR-DB830 based on the reviews here. At first I thought it sounded good, but after about a week I decided that the music I knew well didn't sound quite right. I exchanged it for the Denon, and immediately noticed a marked improvement.

Strength:

Sound great, looks, price?

Weakness:

Price I paid for it. Owners Manual

Well after listening to my old Yamaha for a while, it sounded just a little too brite for me. So I whent shopping and looked at the Denon's. My Yamaha had 85 watts, and the Denon has only 75 watts. Watts smots. This amp cranks out evey bit of those 75 watts. Amazing sound! I don't think I will buy another amp for a while and when I do it will be another Denon. My speakers are as fallows,

mains- Paradigm Mini's
Center- Paradigm CC350
Rears- Polk Audio (soon to be Mini's)
Sub- Def Tech Pro sub 100
Sub- JBL PS1000

This setup sounds great to me. I will upgrade to Paradigm Studio 20's soon.

Good luck...

Strength:

Incredible sound, sharp looks, value

Weakness:

NONE

I listened to just about every receiver in the $500 price range and nothing else compared. It only pushes 75 watts per channel, but it easily fills my apartment. It is more crisp and clear than other brand's 100 watts. S-video would have been nice, but I run component straight to the TV from my DVD player anyway. I agree with the guy below, I plan on keeping this for a long time, but my next one will definitely be Denon. I only paid $375 (open box), but I would recommend this model even at full retail.

Hey, I even like the remote!

No rear chanel preouts

I found this to be a exelent reciever with more than enough power for my Klipsch speakers. I have found it to be extreamly easy to set up and it sounds beautiful. I would revcamend this reciever to anyone who is looking for a nice mid price hometheater reciever. I got it for $445 with shiping from Uncles Stereo.

Strength:

Good sound, 5 channel stereo, being avr1801 with s-video inputs unlike 1800

Weakness:

Power, remote control

It's a receiver with nice sound. I like 5 channel stereo mode, and I'd rather take that for my music listening than 2 million DSP modes in Yamaha or Sony receivers. Switching from analog source to digital source was a little confusing, but eventually figured it out. I wish this fine receiver has more power, though. 70W shared by 5 channels seems not enough to create big sounds. Turning up some volumes on each individual speaker make them sound quite louder than initial all 0db setting. Still, I can have more, although I'm living in a one bedroom apartment. The worst part of the receiver is, however, the remote. All the buttons are too small and volume buttons are located at the bottom the remote. I ended up buying Sony's universal remote with learning feature.

At the end, by the way, I like this receiver a lot because of its clear sound with no hum and no hiss. But, when I get some extra cash, I'll definitely upgrade to a more powerful denon.

Strength:

Powerful remote IF you own other Denon equipment; smooth audio; strong features at that price

Weakness:

Power; lacks digital out to connect to MD player

With my previous intergrated amp blown, I decided to upgrade to an AV amp for 5.1 sound. I was impressed with the Denon's presentation of music, but it has problems if you like to blast loud music. At low volumes it's a fine peice of equipment; but if you like headbanging volumes, you should look at a more powerful model in the series, because it simply doesn't deliver even when your turn up the volume knob.

I was annoyed at the lack of a digital out from the receiver. i now have to bypass the receiver and connect my DVD player directly to my MD player in order to record digitally.
