Strength:
Smoothness, clarity, price and looks
Weakness:
I have to agree with all other 1802 owners that the remote is really the weak point My first A/V receiver was a Yamaha RXV 520. I used it for around 2 months. During that period I always felt that when listening to music it seemed to be to harsh. I went back to the shop where I bought my Yamaha and started looking around for some other products. Finally I decided to trade in my Yamaha for the 1802. After I hooked everything up and started playing some Jazz music it just knocked me off. Smoothness and clarity is the explanation for this Denon. For this value of money I think it would be the best buy to suite audio as well as video. Should anyone look for an A/V receiver in this price range where audio is still priority number 1 all I can suggest is to go for this Denon. Similar Products Used: Yamaha RXV 520 |

Strength:
Best connectivity for the price range. Very clean crisp sound. Terrific dynamics from Gladiator to Music Man.
Weakness:
The remote is a insult to this fine product. It is the worse piece of gear I have used in my 40 years of audio experience. Manual is not up to Denon quality or reputation. A novice user will have problems. I bought this after an intense period of listening, reading product reviews, and evaluating the webs available information. I wanted both low cost but also enough performance to go with my older 35" Mitsubishi, JBL Tower fronts, and JBL bookshelf surrounds. These were great in their stereo days 20 years ago and now sound even better in this home theatre set up. I added a JBL center and a small Yamaha SW. I am still tweaking the system but it sounds great both in music and movies. Similar Products Used: Denon, Sony |

Strength:
Great value and great sound. I like the receivers looks and the back of the receiver makes finding jacks pretty easy.
Weakness:
The binding post seem to be a little flimsy and once again the remote SUCKS. by the way dont think that just cause you have a universal remote that you wont have to deal with the original remote because most universal remotes do not work with it. (if anyone knows of one please tell me so by rightin a review) This is my first Denon and i have been very pleased with this receiver. I upgraded from a pioneer receiver which was basically as good as putting my speaker cables into a wall outlet! The denon has a modest power output(80 wpc.) but it will do for most small to medium rooms. The dolby digital II is a great feature that lets you listen to music in 5.1 channel sound over the whole frequency range(unlike the original Dolby). As many people have said, the remote absolutely SUCKS.However the receivers sound makes up for that. I am powering 2 boston acoustics VR-940''s with the denon and they sound awesome. I have noticed the receiver does not have a ton of base but my BA sub. makes up for that. The only other thing that the receiver lacks is component video imputs. In fact it doesnt have any! I dont know what denon was really thinking when they did that! But overall it is a great receiver for the price. Similar Products Used: Pioneer vsx-d409 Onkyo -dont remember the model |

Staight forward setup the clean sound produced.
Weakness:
Remote I have only had this unit for a little over a month now but I have enjoyed it. Although it is my first AV receiver I found it very easy to set up and my local dealer ran a quick demo on how to set it up. As I think this was a benefit when it did come to unpacking the unit myself. When I did my shopping around I had looked a few different manufacturers but the only other unit that was a consideration was the Marantz 5200, which was a little less money and packed with features that made the Marantz a very good choice. I made my finally choice after reading many user reviews on this site and a few magazine articles. I think my deciding factor was that I new the Denon product has a good reputation and I was sceptical as to how Marantz was able to pack so much into a unit and sell it for less compared to just about all the other Manufacture in this class of amp. Also the local retailer has a very good reputation and they were recommended to me. I will use this unit mostly for HT but I feel it does a good job at playing music in stereo or as I have generally used the 5-channel mode for listening. I am still playing with the speaker volumes as I have just purchased a Sub for my system. The unit seems to produce clean sound as I keep getting complaints that I have it very loud but it does not seem near the volume that my old Kenwood stereo amp was played at. Now I think my weak link in the system are my speakers, which are due for an update. The remote as everyone else has said is terrible; I have never seen such small buttons. I did go out and found a learning remote from Radio Shack for about $40 that can handle all my devices so it is an easy fix. Similar Products Used: First AV amp. |

Strength:
build quality, design, features
Weakness:
none for the price you pay, although the manual could confuse the non technical. Overall I am very pleased. I spent a considerable amount of time researching products, features, price, reputation and reviews. (both magazine and here) As an Engineer I was looking for a well designed, quality product that put the effort into audio quaility and not bells, whistles, DSP modes!!! (Yamaha), gimicks etc. I also did not want to spend a fortune getting only incremental increases in quality. I considered the Marantz 4200 or 5200, Yamaha (not even close) and HK (too expensive for what you get). The closest bang for the buck was the Marantz which was even a bit cheaper but I wanted a phono in for my old records so the Denon 1802 was the ticket. Yes the manual was poorly translated but having "interpreted" many computer parts manuals I had no problem setting things up fairly easily. The remote is what I expected for an "entry" level receiver but you can''t blame Denon for supplying the better remotes only with the higher end products. It acts as incentive for you to purchase the more expensive model (marketing). If you want a unversal programmable, learning remote buy a Kenwood, but don''t be surprised if you are disappointed with the sound quality. If you take a look at the guts of the reciever you will find a fairly beefy transformer, well designed circuitry, discrete output amplification, classic amplifier design, quality components and no shortcuts to save a buck. In other words a well engineered piece of audio equipment. There is no surprise that is sounds great as well. Lots of power too. I was going to run the mains off a Carver M400t (200w/ch) but don''t need to even without a sub. A great product that will provide years of enjoyment...well worth the investment. For information my setup as follows: mains: Sansui PM-C200 ( bought in 1984 with 4-way 16" woofer etc, no need for a sub with these monsters) center: Paradigm CC170 surrounds: Paradigm Atoms Buy quality and don''t be dissapointed Similar Products Used: Pioneer, Kenwood, Sony |

remote control I''ve looked for a Dolby Digital receiver for two years to replace my Dolby Pro-Logic unit. First, I was thinking about a Yamaha, but many friends of mine recomended me Dennon. After a comparision, I realy discovered that Denon is great, and I decided to buy the 1802 model, whit a sub Velodyne CHT-10. I’m very satisfied with the results, but now i have a problem. This pair realy shake my apartment, and my neighbors hate me. My opinion about the remote control is the same of the most opinions: it could be much better. Strength:
Power handling, Clarity, Features, 5 CH Stereo, Ease of Use (Once you read the manual twice) Bang for Buck
Weakness:
Remote sucks, too small, confusing and does not accept any cable box codes. I have searched and researched for a while now for a HT system for a studio apt. All research pointed to the Denon 1802 for bang for my buck. I was confirmed when I was introduced to an audiophile and when I told him what I was looking for and my choice and he strongly agreed with my decision. I even thought of going to the 2802 and he suggested against it, if you want to upgrade go to the 3802. The 5 Channel stereo for TV and music is incredible. More needs to be said about this feature. I think its the best hidden secret about the Denon line. I am using it with a Sony S550D DVD player and I have Source Technologies referance Cinema 1 F/L/C and also thier RC 1 rear channel speakers which are incredible. Similar Products Used: Onkyo DS 797 |
