Strength:

Lots of imputs!! Like the dim feature and the seperate knob for the setting of the sound and sround sound setting

Weakness:

NONE

Bought this and a set of Mirage speakers for a 53 inch Hitachi HDTV widescreen. Pick up a Sony DVD player and some monster cables. Love the sound and the hook up was really easy with RCA cables. The remote is really small and feels like you are going to break it if you push on it hard enough. Other than that it is an awesome receiver

For the money, this a great receiver. I have a small listening room so the 80 watts is plenty. I could see where in a larger listening environment something with a little more juice would be nice to have, but the 1802 works well for me.

After hearing that AVR's usually don't produce music as well as straight music receivers, i found that the 1802 reproduces music admirably. Especially if you use the digital input. I also find that the decoding and reproduction of movie soundtracks is amazing for something in that price range. My dad just dropped a load on a multi-thousand dollar McIntosh system and I have to say that the 1802 compares pretty well with it. My brother has the 3300, and i think the 1802 beats it everywhere but wattage.

The only gripe i have, and its a small one, is the remote. Its fairly small and due to the shape i always pick it up and point the bottom of the thing toward the components only to find out i've got it upside down. Maybe i'm just stupid, i don't know.

Bottom line: If you're on a budget but need something will most of the bells and whistles and don't need a lot of power, the 1802 is a great choice. For the money i don't think you can find anything with as many features.

Strength:

Awesime flexibility. Excellent audio quality

Weakness:

Shy on power output. Remote Control SUCKS!!!

Denon has done it again. An excellent product that cannot be beaten in this price category with a crappy remote control.

I have upgraded from a Denon AVR-1400/Adcom GFA-545II to this AVR-1802/Adcom GFA 555II. If I could have afforded it, I would have kept my GFA-545II for L/R duty. Currently the 1802 powers L/R and the 555II does CTR/SUB duty. The Denon with 80wpc is on par in sound quality compared to the Adcom piece so its being used for L/R. The Adcom feeds 200W to my power hungry sub and the other 200wpc feed my bi-wired CTR channel speaker. For this reason the L/R are set to +12 setting and the CTR is lowered to +3 setting. This way my L/R's aren't overpowered by the 555II. Maybe I'll find another 555II to fix this. I'm quite happy right now.

I like the way the receiver via digital input automatically recognizes the audio format you've selected on your DVD's menu. Its a cool feature. I've been a detractor of the DTS format for several years based on in inconvenience of high priced receivers and DVD's associated with the format. I'm still not convinced that DTS is "better" than DD. I use the DTS mode on the AVR-1802 because, well I paid for so I might as well use it.

What more can I say about the remote? It truly does SUCK!! Its actually worse than the AVR-1400's remote if you believe that. Try doing a pink noise test with a touch of a buttton, good luck!! Are the Denon engineers even paying attention to our complaints? They have the best receivers on the market mated with the worst remote controls in the market.

This is best receiver out there bar none under $500.

Excellent quality and sound for the price paid. I expected Denon to be much more expensive, before I went to the shop, but was very surprised to find this new model within my budget. 5 chanel stereo sound great, so I am playing some of my old CD's I haven't played in years.

I agree that the 5 x 80 W requires to put the volume high sometimes, but who cares. I guess my Polk PSW350 sub helps here as well to get a room full of good sound.

I have the Polk 6600 surround speakers and a Denon CD player, which make s a good set.

Strength:

Clean audio Quality

Weakness:

Limp Bass in music without sub. Poor interface.

Well this was an upgrade on a decade old AV reciever and I was expecting to get my socks knocked off.

The Good. Very clean amplifier, nearly non-existant hiss. Build quality looks pretty good. Unfortunately thats where my positive experience ends.

Bass: I did dozens of compares with my old reciever and many A-B comparisons with my two sets of Paradigms (3se mini and Monitor 3 mk2) I swapped the speakers and wiring several times. So speaker phase was not an issue, I meticulously checked that. I am running one pair of speakers and playing music. System is set up for Large Front and None everywhere else, so the full range is going to them. In comparison to my old Pioneer sound is thin and weak. Listening at low volume like I often do, bass is reminiscent of a transistor radio. Not good. Testing done with recievers tone controls at flat. The Pioneers tone contols also improve bass more than the Denons. The Denon never produced a reasonably balanced Bass response.

Interface: Ugh. The remote is terrible, nothing new for denon I guess, but anything you want to do is buried under many levels on counter-intuitive menus. Many functions can be done only on the remote, some only on the reciever. The manual is all but useless as well. My old pioneer can work great without the remote and the remote has buttons for all major functions (balance fading volume) on the top level.

I am looking into exchanging it, but the place I bought has limited return policy and few other receivers.

I guess I may have to purchase a sub just to get decent bass in my small apartment if I keep it.

Great looks, Easy set up, Lots of I/O

Weakness:

Remote(seems to be a common theme)

I purchased the Denon as an upgrade to the Yamaha as I wanted the 96Khz, 24 bit processing. I really like the sound for Music and it does a good job on movies. The bass response compared to the Yamaha is a little weak as I don't use a subwoofer. I was suprised to find it would not decode the Dolby Digital 5.1 signal for Pearl Harbor and Jurassic Park III. I have not contacted Denon to see if there is a problem with the decoder they intend to fix but I use the DTS encoding and it works fine. I solved the remote problem after set up by buying a $15.00 Sony remote and programming it for all my components. As long as I am not changing DSP modes or doing any setup it handles the Job fine. I keep the Denon remote around just in case. I think this is a great receiver if your not into alot of "Bells and Whistles" and listen to alot of music as well as movies.

Strength:

High performance/price ratio

Weakness:

Display panel is too small and remote control is not easy to use

AV1802 may be one of the entry level of AV receiver. Nevertheless, the performance is good among other low price competitors. I use my old speakers from a cheap hi-fi set as the front speakers which able to produce the sweet sound that I never heard before.

I really like the DD II function that make my old CDs and tapes having new looks.

Strength:

1. Got it cheap (no-tax-day at goodguys), open box (literally mint and no dust though), looks like the original owner doesn't know english or how to operate the thing (there's a lot of chinese characters written in the manual, poor guy :-) )
2. although only rated 5 x 80 watts output bandwith rated (20Hz-20KHz), the THD at surround operation is a respectable .08% (hard to find in this price range)
3. pro logic ii
4. nice and sturdy made
5. gigantic heatsinks
6. bunch of inputs

Weakness:

1. only 3 digital ins (2 opt, 1 coax)

first of all, i agree the remote is somewhat cheesy but what can you expect from an entry level receiver anyway. spend a bit more and get yourself a learning remote. case closed.

used it on a jbl n24 rear and front speakers, n center and pw10 powered subs. so far nothing to complain, my cable viewing is great with pro logic ii, the dts and dolby digital kicks in great with my dvd.

tested same setup with the sony (5 x 100 watts but .9% thd on the same bandwith), i noticed a lot of hissing on regular pro logic mode, not encountered in the denon.

about the dsp, i'd rather they gave me a $100 discount than getting a 20+ dsp... if i have more money, definitely would go to denon avr-2802!

great simple receiver, quite tweakable. if i want more, i'll go to the movie theater occasionally. other than that 5 stars all the way.

Strength:

lot of bang for the buck.

Weakness:

will not play PEARL HARBOR OR JURRASIC PARK IN DOLBY DIGITAL. but will play in dts so make sure you have an up to date dvd player.

the first thing i noticed was the denon did not have the noisy fan my 85x5 onkyo had. the musical sound was better as well. my b&w dm 330's seem to have more high end and tighter sound. did not notice the 5 watts i lost fron my onkyo. the subwoofer output performed well over the onkyo's non-existince bass output while playing a cd.i did notice crosstalk as i did in the onkyo. turn off the cd player if you are playing an lp or movie to avoid it. the night before i recieved the denon i watched pearl harbor in dolby digital on my onkyo. i have an older sony and it soes not have dts. then i tried it on my denon and no audio. the denon processor failed where the old onkyo read it. denon is aware of this.so is touchtone. if your dvd does dts you will be fine, but if it doesnt you will be buying a new dvd player.jurasic park is the only other cd that does not work. 2 out of 12,000 dvds isnt to bad.overall the unit rocks.

Strength:

Ease of use - sound quality - options - connections - was recommended over sony, onkyo and several other brands

Weakness:

remote control - also sometimes does not read that the disc is dolby digital and therefor plays back in pl II format - does anyone else have this problem???? can it be fixed?

overall i have been very pleased - spent a couple of months doing research having known nothing about receivers before and consistently was told denon was a great receiver at a decent price - sound has been amazing and it is fairly simple to set up and use - my only problem has been the device occasionally does not seem to recognize that i am playing a dolby digital dvd and therefore it plays it through pro logic II - sometimes it will switch in the middle of the movie - does anyone else have this problem? can it be fixed?
