If I had 10,000 clams to blow on nice seperates I MIGHT be able to find a weakness in this piece. I have had this thing for quite some time. NEVER had a problem. If it was legal to marry a piece of stereo equipment I might actually consider this one. I love this reciever, everything about it. It's silky smooth playing through my Paradigms which are naturally bright. Details, image, transparency, and raw power while staying incredibly smooth; these are the factors that set this reciever in a class far beyond anything in it's price range, and I've heard them all! I've seen better remotes, I've seen easier setups, I've seen more user-friendly ergonomics, but I could care less....just close your eyes and LISTEN to this thing. It's simply incredible. Similar Products Used: Sony, Sony ES, Onkyo, Yamaha, Marantz, Adcom, and the list goes on..... |

Sound, power, looks.
Weakness:
Remote! I have been using this receiver sence 1998 and have been nothing but absolutely amazed with it! It has more then enough power for me. I never push the volume higher then -10, any higher is just too loud! The sound in direct two channel mode for CDs sounds smooth, warm, and detailed. For DVDs in Dolby Digital and DTS will blow you away! I love the Cinema re-EQ, it is very usefull on bright sounding movies, and for old DVDs like The Wizard of Oz Cinema re-EQ takes the static out of the sound track. I use 5-chanel stereo for Digital cable, and it does a wonderful job filling the whole room with sound. I only have two negitive things to say about this receiver. One, I hate the remote, bought a Pronto. Two I have full range speakers on all channels, on every sound mode but Dolby Digital or DTS this receiver only sends 80hz and above to my center speaker. This bums me out, but when I get a HDTV tuner for my TV it wont matter any more because everthing will broadcast in 5.1. My second system had a Denon AVR-1601, but it died. I was thinking of moving my Denon AVR-3300 to my second system and replace it with a Denon AVR-3803, but I think I will keep the 3300 in my referance system and get a Denon AVR-1603 for my second system. This will make the most sence as I am totally happy with my Denon AVR-3300. My System: Pioneer Elite 520HD (TV) All Definitive Technology Speakers: BP2002TL (Front & Back) C/L/R2002 (enter) Pro-Sub200TL (Center Sub) PF15TL (LFE Sub Only) Denon AVR-3300 (Receiver) Sony DVP-530D (DVD) Comcast (Digital Cable) Pronto (Remote) 10 Gauge Monster wire, all speakers Bi-wired. Strength:
RCA jack, S-video, Multi-digital inputs. Processing of sound is so real it is amazing. The Cinema Eq is the best of its kind and no gimic sound fields, just pure quality sound.
Weakness:
Overheating This reciever is worth the time and investment. I read all and I mean all of the reviews. Yes, mine too had the overheating problem. From what I saw and felt from my receiver, the fan was blowing the excess heat towards the back but was not strong enough to push it out of the housing of the unit. Therefore the heat was building up in the back of my unit causing the temp protection to kick it off. If I sat the receiver by itself with no surrounding obstruction it operated a little hot fine. As soon as I put it in the entertainment center(with the space recomended by Denon), it would overheat in 30 minutes.(Try it. I bet you get the same results.) In one of the previous reviews an owner mentioned he put an external fan on his unit and it cured the problem. He was right. If you have a little bit of know how do it. I put a 115v 10cfm fan with a little bit of high temperature silicon in between the unit and fan so heat does not transfer through the metal casing. The noise is very minimal, but I can now put my reciever werever I want, and no overheating. This receiver is so sweet sounding it puts all others to shame. Strength:
Great sound when functional
Weakness:
Questionable manufacturing quality. It's hardly a good buy when the unit fails so quickly. While it works, this receiver sounds great. Unfortunately, there manufacturing quality issues here. My unit failed after 28 months of use. The problem? Bad solder joints that finally broke loose. I had it repaired for $100 but why should any receiver fail in this short of a time period? My last receiver worked fine for over 15 years. The vendor, to date, has ignored my requests for support after the sale. Caveat Emptor! |

Strength:
Plenty of power, 8 channel analog input, 2 channel music reproduction better than most sub$1000 amps. Movies sound amazing with my 4ohm AR-tsw series spkrs, all full-range.
Weakness:
Speaker terminals too wide for dual banana plugs, tuner a little weak(what's new), suicidal remote Bought used to upgrade from a Denon 2700. Huge leap in 2 channel(use for SACD) and noticeably more power in home theater use. This beast gets pretty hot so do not use an enclosed cabinet. After 2 months my remote literally burned up in my hand, white smoke and all!$95 to replace. 2-channel sounds almost as good as my vintage Marantz amp;quite a feat. Strength:
Powerful, handsome, decent price, plenty of inputs.
Weakness:
This specefic model seems to have many problems that are not easily fixed, stupid remote. Let's not talk about the confusing remote. Lets talk about the receiver itself. Denon is a company that makes fantastic products. If you get a working 3300, you have an excellent receiver. Unfortunately, this specific model seems to have quality guidelines that do not match the Denon name. This model has numerous problems, with the most frequent being overheating and shutting down after about an hour to an hour and a half of light/medium volume. That is what happened to me. I heard the exact receiver I bought at Tweeter for about 20 minutes and it sounded fantastic. When I took it home, I was watching a DVD and 3/4 way through the movie, it shut down. I felt the amp and it was so hot I could have fried bacon on it. It has been sent to Tweeter’s service-center twice and what do you know…it’s still not fixed. For the information, Tweeter is the largest authorized Denon dealer. If an authorized dealer cannot fix it, it makes me wonder if this model has a batch of lemons in it. Another frequent problem is the cooling fan. The cooling fan does not kick on unless the system is hot. Some 3300's have cooling fans that sounds like there is a lawn mover in their receiver. I personally did not have that problem. The point that I am getting at is this can be a good receiver but be EXTREMELY cautious when purchasing it. Listen to it for at least 2 hours before making any judgments on it. Mine sounds great until it overheats and turns off. I am still waiting on mine to be serviced again. I would buy another Denon product, but definitely not the 3300; most likely I would buy the 3801. If my receiver is fixed, I would give it 4-5 stars, but it's not. |

Strength:
Powerful sound, clear and high definition music reproduction, very stable and accurate tuner section.
Weakness:
The unit may get hot, if it is used over a prolonged period. Therefore air circulation is important. Small digital display for volume level, difficult to read from four meters. I have been using this Denon receiver Mod. 3300 for over 17 months. The sound is powerful, clear and comprises full spectrum that is available. The tuner part is stable and sensitive and can work even with a room antenna. I mainly use this unit for stereo music listening (jazz) and occasionally for my home theatre. I have never had any complaint with this unit; moreover friends and relatives, also claimed audio enthusiasts, who have listened to the sound always expressed their high appreciation for this Denon receiver. Having recently moved to a new (larger) flat and having thus afforded myself a 'working room' purely for my own personal use, my intention is buying a follow-up model of the same producer, namely a Denon 3802 receiver solely to be used in this room. I have read here complaints about the remote, which are partially true, but if you would ever sacrifice 1 or 2 hours intensive study for learning its features, you surely will master it out and use it happily for years. My final word is: Do not even hesitate to buy this product, if it's still available. Similar Products Used: Marantz, Technics |
