I have had my unit now for about a month. I upgraded from stereo to the home theater with this unit. The 3600 dts meet my expectations and delivers a nice sound for the dollars invested. I really like the 5ch stereo feature, the digital dolby and the dts. This is truly an great unit. I have not noticed a lack of bass responce but, I do have a good set of speakers and a matching powered subwoofer that I carried over into this system. We are pleased with the sound. I agree with the others that an additional digital input would be nice. Overall this is a well built unit the meets my needs and expectations, allows me the flexability to add equipment or to use the preamp out so that I can use my big amp for the front.

I purchased the 3600dts a few months ago after months of shopping and comparing different receivers in the same price range. I have been very disapointed in my choice. The first unit I brought home was defective. It had to "warm up" to receive the Dolby Digital signal. It would crackle and breakup for the first few minutes and then it would work fine. I took it back and my dealer replaced it with no problem. The unit I have now does not detect a DTS signal. If I reinitalize the microprocessor, the DTS works, but as soon as I switch to any other surround mode, DTS will not work. Denon has been extremely unresponsive to my dealer who has tried to get their tech people to do something about the problem, but they won't even return phone calls. Overall, based on my experience with the 3600dts, I feel like it was rushed to market with shoddy workmanship. For an $1800 receiver, I find that totally unacceptable. I would suggest that you avoid this receiver at all costs.

OK, I just read my review again, and noticed that I had a few spelling mistakes. Sorry. Anyways, I just upgraded to a pair of Paradigm Studio 20s and a PS1000 sub...one word: AWESOME. I don't think there's any reciever out there that can match it (within that price range of course). SO, AGAIN. 5 stars!!!

First of all the Denon 3600 is a really great piece of equiptment. I'ts buildis top notch, and its sound is nothing short of spectacular. I can't understand how someone could even compare the Harmon Kardon AVR 25 Pro Logic reciever with this unit, I almost fell out of my chair laughing when I read one of the earlier reviews. I actually owned that particular HK unit, and returened it for a more serious piece of audio equiptment. The HK was a toy compared to this unit.

I purchased the Denon 3600DTS in March of 99. It is an upgrade from the Denon AVR 2500 I have owned since 1996.I wished to stay with Denon as I am pleased with the quality. I have not been dissapointed. The 3600DTS performs flawlessly in all modes. An Adcom 5503 is connected to the the Denon's pre amp out for the front three channels. Speakers are the older type PSB's Stratus Gold's with the PSB-#6center channel speaker. The rears are NS-220 3way Yamaha speakers from my old college days.I added some wall/ceiling corner room tunes to improve the musicality of the room and a velodyne F-1000 for ear wax disruption.
As my music preferences vary considerably- I put this system through its paces and I am not dissapointed.Seriously boy's and girl's this baby makes the world spin. I think it rates a 4.5/10.
Originally I wanted the AVR 5700 but but the $1000 difference was the difference.
From the "Flies" bussing in the rear speakers in an American Werewolf in Paris to Sara Brightman in the front stereo channels- I tell you boy's and girls it's a mother.

I purchased the pioneer 27tx and it seemed to be not very present and I had to turn it up alot to even get any sound out of it.I payed 1399 for it and was able to fork out another 400 so I could get the DENON AVR3600 dts. The Denon is a beefy 47 pounds compared to the pioneer vsx27tx.The Denon has a real amp in it and 3 power transformers in it.Each part of this receiver is working to the best of it's ability. This receiver kicks but in all different modes. To all out there that own anything besides a Denon receiver does not know anything about quality ampification. The pioneer is mosfet and sounded descent when turned up but lacked headroom.Denon is the Bomb. The only thing I dislike is that there is no indicator when the processor is in DTS. If I built any processor or receiver with DTS processing I would make sure an indicator was installed on the front panel so all of my customers would have the question. AM I IN DTS OR NOT?

I also found the sound on the Denon to be very thin. There was little to no bass on everything I played on it. I will say however that it does have a nice beefy look to it. However, that does not make up for its lack of full sound.

Strength:

Build, quality

Simply the best reciever for the money. The build quality is awesome, and the sound from it is intense. Watched Matrix on DVD and was blow away with the car seens. The Denon processed everything beautifully! Even my Dreamcast and Playstation games come out good. I just upgraded to a pair of Paradigm Studio 20s and a PS1000 sub...one word: AWESOME. I don't think
there's any reciever out there that can match it (within that price range of course). I think the quality and the workmanship the Denon has put into this reciever is second to none. The 3600 dts meet my expectations and delivers a nice sound for the dollars invested. I found a good price at http://www.yourinsider.com . I really like the 5ch stereo feature, the digital dolby and the dts. This is truly an great unit.

Must say that this unit really kicks Ass in the Home theater department. Can't wait to get a DTS movie to give it a try. I thought it was pretty crummy with Regular Stereo listening, but when I replaced my bose AM7 with something bigger (Eosone RSF400 hey, they were cheap at 140 each with a 9 year warranty), I was much happier. Unfortunately, I'll have to wait until I get my BP30s to give a real review of the stereo functionality. I'm not really impressed with Denons obvious ploy to make this unit out to be more powerfull then it is. It was originally rated at 90x5 at .05 THD, but then they (on paper) changed the spec to 110x5 at .7 THD (Who knows, I even called denon to ask about the specs, and the tech couldn't even give me an answer. Anyhow, I am impressed with the build quality, and features. because of the Mis-Representation of denon's advertising, I can only give this unit a 4 star review. Other then that, I'm real happy
