    Strength:

    Many many many.....

    Weakness:

Borderline phono S/N and no MC input. No on screen vol display.

This receiver is the bomb! The Denon AVR-3802 totally annihilates anything in its price class. I have been on a 3 year mission to replace my old JVC 5.1 with a amp that does both music and surround. The end of my quest is finally at hand (and it ROCKS)! I have a very complex 7.1 channel setup and had it all working within 8 hours (including a trip for a cables)! I did an A/B test against my best hand built CLASS A and I heard very little difference. The features are way too numerous to go into; but if DTS-ES and Dolby Pro-Logic II suddenly become totally passe; it is no big deal to add yet another decoder to the EXT inputs. Or better yet you could build an awesome pair of 2 way or 3 way speakers and assorted active filters and drive it all right from your easy chair. I already have the parts on the way!

    Strength:

Much more detailed than my old Sony ES on medium and high frequencies. Sorry reviewers, but the remote is very easy to learn and the instructions manual is correct. One hour is enough to read the manual, understand and program the system and the remote. Honest power and very low distortion on direct mode.

    Weakness:

Analog input (DVD/CD). Do not use it. Buy any coax digital. The bass to the main channels could be better to listen stereo music on full range speakers. The solution is invest on a good coax digital cables and speaker cables and it works. Sometimes the auto function changes after detect a DD movie from DD to Neo6 and vice e versa. Denon, pls Dolby digital MUST be an option, not something to be detected by the receiver. And I need to force Dolby Digital doing the receiver detect again using "Auto" option during the movie and with the remote button "Mode" with no lights !!! Needs too much space to heat dissipation. The remote doenst have signals like ">" to play, other to stop, etc, presents in all equipments. The remote lights are only to some buttons !!!!???? Why Denon ?? Why the REMOTE doesn''t have the fuction Dimmer to switch off the receiver lights during the movies ?

    Strength:

Great power and features. The best receiver I have ever owned.

    Weakness:

I can''t think of a strong negative for it.

This is a dream machine. The power in this unit is incredible. In the beginning I didn''t think that there could really be a difference in power with this unit from my Sony 110 watts per channel receiver, but I was wrong. The Sony 945 does not come close at all. The power from this Denon is clean, and it really has made my speakers play well beyond what I thought they were capable of. Movies are amazing, I have rewatched almost everything I own in the last few months and I''ve been blown away. DTS is absolutely amazing, it completely wraps you into the movie. Dolby Digital is no slouch either. With my Sonys I''d settle for D/D when I didn''t have a choice, but its definitely not settling anymore. I love PLII, it really turns your cable box into a multiplex.

    Strength:

Beautiful, multi-optioned, good reputation, incredible sound, many nice "creature" features, will be good for years to come (7.1 ability etc.).

    Weakness:

Can be hard to set up, many features not yet useful (7.1), intimidating in general to a newbie entering the higher end A/V market.d

I gave four star ratings because I have not had this product long enough to fullly evaluate it. Allow me to add my voice to the choir singing the accolades of this receiver: it simply rules. I am in the process of upgrading my entire home theatre/stereo system. I spent months researching A/V receivers due to the fact that I recently remodeled my house and for the first time in my life I have a large enough (30'' x 15'') room to take advantage of great sound. I read reviews, talked to people, read more reviews, went to the library etc. etc. My final conclusion was that the Denon AVR-3802 has one factor oing for it that no other receiver in this price range has: everyone who listens to it likes it. I am a believer, let me tell you. As for the positive aspects: A solidly built receiver that is obviously a step above the norm. Functionality? Are you kidding? This receiver offered to do my dishes when I unpacked it, no joke. It has every type of surround option you could want, except for one: no THX of any kind. It provides a dizzying array of features and options, all of which are very intimidating until you get to know the unit and find out nice things like the fact that it remembers your settings from component to component. And the sound is unbelievable. My wife and I listened to the THX sound wave (on DTS setting)on American Beauty several times, marveling at the sound. Lest I go on too much, here are some negatives: Unless you are used to this level receiver, set-up can be a bear. I am moving from an Onkyo that was literally brand new when Dolby Pro Logic was a big deal in receivers. So, figuring out speaker setup, surround modes, connections, TOSlinks, Coaxial digital etc. etc. can really be a be-atch. Took me 5 hours to get rolling for real. Ignore the techno-inhbited who hate the remote, it''s a dream. Will replace all your other remotes, thanks to the learning ability (it can "learn" your other remotes functions from them). Overall I have only minor complaints so far. I will post a follow up to this review when I know more. I do not regret this purchase, and urge you to go for it. I gave four star ratings only because I have not had the product long enough to truly evaluate it. Oh, how did I get such a great price? Item is "Used but in new condition".a

    Strength:

Excellent audio and video signal quality. The "cinema" and "music" surround modes are great. Multiroom feature definitely a plus.

    Weakness:

Remote does not provide enough flexibility while programming additional units. Tuner use (station switching) difficult without remote. Station display (RDS?) missing.

This was an upgrade from an 8-year old Denon AVR-2500: boy, what a difference! Overall, this is an excellent piece of equipment for middle/upper-middle audio (and video) applications. Once properly setup and programmed, it provides an easy access to all signal sources: it nicely remembers speaker setup and surround modes for each source separately. The surround modes are so much better compared to what I used to listen to on my previous AVR. The bad news is that to enjoy them fully one needs 7 (or 9 when using "back" surround or multiroom) speakers. The technical characteristics are supperb - I''m not going to bother you with all the details. The number of inputs will satisfy almost everybody - although I could use one more located on the front plate for quick connection of a video camera or PS2 console. The feature I lke the most: "auto" switch mode for analog/digital/PCM/DTS audio inputs. The thing I dislike most: the tuner can not be easily operated without the remote. Speaking about the remote: it is a good one but it is no ATKIS by any means. Setup and programming for additional devices is limited and difficult. So, I did get the ATKIS :-) All of this can be had for a very reasonable price at www.acousticsounddesign.com

This would be the second time I am reviewing this receiver. I have had it for a week now, and have auditioned it with all of my favorite dvd''s, and some of my choice cd''s, and I haven''t found anything that this doesn''t make sound better than I ever heard before. This receiver has punch on the low end, and warmth and sweetness in the midrange and highs. I had 3 Yamaha receivers before this one and thought they were the only game in town, but the Denon puts Yamaha to shame. Yamaha is bright and thin sounding compared to Denon. I had also auditioned the 2802 at Audiolab, and that is also a great sounding receiver, with one less channel, and 20 less w-p-c. These receivers are a steal, believe me. If you live near Philly, call Audiolab at 215-295-8795, and ask for Dave. He will treat you fairly. Tell him Stuart sent you.

This is great reciever, nothing else out there gives you all this feature functionality plus the power 110x7. The remote will let you run 2 macros with 29 commands each. And unlike a previous review, switching between sources is simple, one button on the remote or the turn of a dial. It''s not cluttered with useless buttons.

Denon avr-3802/1082= AWESOME performance! I just switched from a Sony to this unit and the difference is astonnishing! In EVERY way the Denon outshines my previous receivers. Im really not sure why people seem to have a problem with either the remot or the manual I find bot to be very good. Hook up was fast and painless as well as setup. The on screen menue make this a quick and fast task. With so many options for set up This receiver should satisfy even the most demanding audiophile. One I calibrated my system with both the Avia test disc and the internal tones. It really improved my overall HT experience.

    Strength:

It''''s better to look good than be good

    Weakness:

    Sounds too thin

Pros: adequate power, support for directional and dipole surround speakers Cons: Terrible control design, missing critical functions from front panel, CAN''''T RECORD FROM DIGITALLY CONNECTED SOURCES! The Bottom Line: It''''s so hampered by design blunders that it can''''t perform some basic functions. It calls everything Denon makes into question. Consider Yamaha RX-V1200. Recommended: No Unfortunately, most of the positive reviews simply regurgitate what you could get from the specs (no offense to the reviewers). They fail to reveal what you will deal with once you set this receiver up and use it day to day. This product is incredibly cumbersome to use. I''''m not talking about complexity; I''''m talking about astoundingly poor design decisions. It''''s almost as if Denon has never used a receiver before. Let me list the gaffes: 1. There''''s no straightforward way to select a source on the receiver. Let''''s say you''''re done listening to a CD and now you''''re going to watch a videotape. You can''''t just press a button to select the VCR as the source. Instead of having a separate button for each source (like CD, VCR, tape), Denon forces you to turn a dial and watch the display for your choice to come up. So you regularly end up hunting through every input to find the one you want. Dials are for wide-ranging adjustments, like volume or frequency. They are not for choosing from six or seven possible options. When you have a small, constant set of options, you use BUTTONS, Denon. Denon actually makes its bad decision worse by not showing the list of inputs anywhere. The knob would be more tolerable if it moved an LED indicator from one source to another on some kind of list. At least you''''d know which way to turn the knob. Jeez, Denon, I''''ve seen gear from the ''''50s that had selector knobs with five LABELED positions on them. You''''re telling us you can''''t figure that out in 2001? 2. There''''s no row of buttons for your favorite stations on the receiver, and not even an up/down pair of buttons for scanning. You have to walk back to your remote control, change its mode, and then use its keypad to select your stations. Now, someone has pointed out after digging through the documentation that you can
